2016-2017 Creighton University Application Thread

Does Creighton send something in the mail after an acceptance?

Yes, you should get an acceptance packet in the mail soon after receiving the e-mail. It has more specific details about what you need to do to accept the admissions offer, as well as a couple other things. I think it gets sent to whatever your AAMC main address is set to.

Hmm, weird. It has been a week after the email and I didn't receive one.

I had thought it would take a week or two to receive it, but I was surprised to get it over the weekend (e-mail Friday, letter Monday). But I think I might have had the exceptional experience, rather than the normal. Most of the information included can be found on the e-mail or through the secondary portal though, especially the process to accept the offer via the portal.

Anyone get a background check email?

"An additional participating medical school has requested a copy of your national background report."

Just withdrew my interview for March 3rd due to another acceptance. Good luck to everyone this cycle!

Hi everyone! Don't know if this has been asked earlier in the feed but could anyone speak to the pros and cons of attending Creighton? Thank you!!

Hi everyone! Don't know if this has been asked earlier in the feed but could anyone speak to the pros and cons of attending Creighton? Thank you!!

Here's the pros and cons I've seen:

Pros:
- pass/fail/honors system
- collaborative environment
- recorded, non-mandatory lectures
- dedication to service
- it's an older, well established program

Cons:
- high tuition (especially with the mandatory Mac books)
- very little research at Creighton
- somewhat of a rural area compared to bigger cities with larger academic medical centers

Any current students care to comment or add to this? These are just a few things I picked up in the interview.

How do students match into competitive specialties with little research?

How do students match into competitive specialties with little research?

It seemed like that while there are some research opportunities for students at Creighton, it is definitely not a large emphasis of the school. It's possible to involve yourself in research being conducted there, but there won't be as many opportunities compared to a larger research-centric academic institution.

Creighton students still match into competitive specialties. There is less research but that doesn't mean there is none. Also, if someone gets good board scores, gets honors, and does sub-I's in their area of interest and secures LORs, they still have a great shot at matching to competitive specialties. Research is not always required, helpful but not required.

For those who have been accepted and applied to scholarships, anyone know when we will hear back from the scholarship committee?

Apartment wise look into Broadmoor Apartments and Urban Village. These are probably the two largest apartment companies in Omaha. They both generally have nice, newly updated apartments for reasonable rent. There are definitely cheaper options out there, but these two have a good range of locations, apartment sizes, and costs. At the very least I'd check out their websites to get an idea of what price range vs amenities you should be looking for. The neighborhood you heard of was probably River Park (a Broadmoor owned apartment complex). It's actually in Council Bluffs just across the river, but is a very good apartment complex with several Creighton students about 10 min drive from campus and 15-25 min drive to Bergan depending on how I-80 is moving. They have a gym, multiple pools, sand volleyball, basketball courts, grills, etc, and most of our class BBQs/summer get-togethers were hosted there. If you are interested in River Park I'd suggest getting in contact with them sooner rather than later as they tend to fill up quickly in the summer. Another option is Midtown Crossing which will offer very nice, new apartments in a great location, but most likely with higher rent plus additional costs for parking. There are also several new apartments opening in the Midtown and Blackstone districts which seem nice driving by them. Generally cost of living is cheap and rent can be anywhere from $500 a month for a studio to $1300 a month for a two bedroom apartment and everything in between. Other people rent houses which I personally know nothing about, but they seemed to be happy with their decision as well.

Thanks so much for the advice! I'm sorry I somehow just saw this reply. I'm going to look into all of those places now. Would you say most people find roommates at second look or online somehow?

II today!

Any of you guys know what time the dutch dinner ends? I'm wondering if I should fly back Friday night or Saturday morning.

I agree with this. Creighton can be fairly stingy with Honors grades for third year clerkships, and several program directors on interviews who are familiar with Creighton (including the Mayo PD) said that they place a very high value on applicants honoring clerkships at Creighton. Additionally, I think Creighton does a good job at preparing students for Step 2 which is becoming increasingly more important. With regards to research, I would agree that Creighton isn't a research powerhouse, but there are plenty of opportunities out there if you look for them. There is a summer research program for the summer between M1 and M2 year that helps pair you with a faculty researcher, pays like $2,500 for the summer, and you present your project at a big Midwest research conference hosted by Creighton and UNMC. I did some cardiology research and ended up talking about it at almost every interview I went to and was a definite plus on my residency application. Also despite not being a big academic research center, there are several big time researchers at Creighton. Dr. Agrawal has several NIH funded studying going on right now and has a ton of federal grants for his research, Dr. Swanson just got a big NIH grant, and several other faculty members have multiple well funded projects going on right now. Many clinicians also have smaller projects going that would probably be a little less work intensive. Research won't be thrown in your face at Creighton, but it is definitely available to those who are interested.

Would anyone mind sharing what this school's grading system is like? (P/F, A-F or whatever) & also, does anyone knows if they rank the students

Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that preclinical is H/P/NP with the top 10% of the class getting honors. It's H/P/NP for clinicals too.

Is there a deadline for when one has to accept their financial aid package? It didn't seem like there was a time-table for it, but I was wondering if anyone had any better ideas on when these things generally need to be taken care of. Thanks!

As far as I know this is correct for preclinical years with the top 10% getting honors and then anything over 70% considered passing. For clinical years it is more complex. Much of the grade is based on Shelf Exam scores, which are exams given to third year medical students across the country mostly comprised of Step 2 type questions. In general, the minimum for honors at Creighton would be scoring in the 80th percentile or above nationally. The shelf would often account for a certain percentage of clerkship scores with the rest coming from faculty evaluation. Lower clinical evaluations would subsequently require higher shelf scores to still get honors and vice versa. Each rotation has a different weighting system for shelf scores and faculty evals.

Acceptance letter arrived today! I really liked this school on the interview, only concern is the higher cost of attendance. Best of luck to everyone still waiting to hear back!

When did you interview?

How long did it take to hear back from Creighton through email/portal?

I received an email about 3.5-4 weeks after the interview, the official letter came in the mail today a few days after.

Does anyone know how much dedicated study time students get for step 1? I think they told us during the interview day, but I can't remember what they said

Submitted in August and have heard nothing since then. Haven't been officially rejected yet, but I'm just curious if anybody else is in the same boat?

I'm in the same boat too. Do they reject pre-II?

Rejected. Lmao seemed kinda harsh, "After a thorough examination of your credentials, the Committee has found it necessary to decline your application." Oh well, best of luck to the rest of you moving forward.
