2016-2017 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Kind of late to the game, anybody have any experience with the kinds of activities they are looking for in the secondary ie) do they want to hear about pursuing hobbies or is that irrelevant for the adcom?

Would a 31 MCAT be too low for this school?

That question can only be answered in the context of the rest of your application. If you have other things to offer (GPA, ECs, experiences, etc.), then no it's not. I have what you would call a "less than stellar GPA", but I guess other aspects of my application were able to compensate for that to some extent. If you like the school and you feel it would be a good fit, then you should go for it. I'm sure people have been accepted with a 31 MCAT.

^Unless you're far below the 10% of accepted applicants (info found on MSAR), one has a chance. However, if you are very far from the median you have to ask yourself the questions: "is the rest of my application impressive and unique?" "are there nuances in my application that put numbers into context?" and "am I a good fit for this school?". No one on SDN can really answer that for you (except maybe some feedback on your EC's). Answer honestly to yourself and then make an informed decision =]

Preparing for my interview in a couple of weeks... Any current students or previous interviewees who can speak to the day and what to expect? Thanks!

Does anyone know stats if you get a II chances of admittance?

The number of interviewees and matriculates is listed in MSAR. From 75 IS applicants 16 interviewed and 3 matriculated. From 6,032 OOS applicants 738 interviewed and 77 matriculated.

These numbers don't, of course, state how many people were invited to interview but declined, nor how many were accepted, but did not matriculate.

How long did it take for your app to be complete after submitting the secondary? I submitted on 7/24 and my app is still "in review"

Mine was complete immediately after my new MCAT score was received. Took about 2-3 weeks total.

Out of 759 interviews, 276 were accepted and 92 matriculated according to USNWR. 36% acceptance rate after II, one of the lower rates compared to all medical schools.

Being that the secondary was basically an info form, I don't think I have any chances at this school anymore. I would group Dartmouth with GW and Georgetown due to the amount of apps they get. Super competitive.

Where are you seeing this in review status at? All I have is the page showing everything is complete.
My apologies, I misspoke. I have: "Your secondary application has been received and is in process." Wondering why I'm not complete yet...

I wish medical schools didn't have portals...it just creates confusion and compulsive behavior.

I have an interview here and my portal still has that same message. Probably wouldn't read too much into it!

Is it too late to apply here just now? My AMCAS is verified and I have the secondary written.

Not at all. Dartmouth is one of the friendliest schools to late applicants. I believe they try to structure their admissions process to give all applicants a *relatively* equal shot, regardless when they applied.

II! What airport are people flying to?! It's freaking expensive

Congrats! It's a great interview experience! I suggest flying into Boston Logan and taking the Dartmouth Coach to Hanover... Worked pretty seamlessly for me!

The Dartmouth Coach will pick you up from the airport and take you to Hanover - you'll be dropped off right on campus. It makes a couple of stops on the way and takes just under 3 hours.

II today! I was also wondering if they offer student hosts? It didn't say anything in the e-mail.

II this afternoon! Received 7.11 and submitted 7.25. So excited.

When admissions confirms your chosen interview date, they will send you information on hotels and the student hosting program. The hotels in Hanover are pricey but most convenient. The others require transportation to Dartmouth for the interview. Helpful to know that uber isn't an option in Hanover!
