2016-2017 Indiana University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm trying to book my flights. The email with my interview date didn't specify what time activities for the day should end so about what time would be best to get a flight out of Indianapolis?
On my interview day, the last activity was a financial aid session at 2:15pm that I believe was no more than 30 minutes long. They made it clear that if you had heard the information before or had a flight to catch, it was perfectly acceptable to skip that portion.

Interviewed 9/7 and still haven't heard. Anyone in the same boat?

I interviewed on 9/14 and still haven't heard! Assuming no news is good is at this point. It's absolutely agonizing waiting though 🙁

They said at my interview that no news is good news. From what I have heard they are very backed up and don't necessarily look at apps by date of interview.

first year or second year IU students, how do you feel about the new curriculum?
It would be great to hear from any current IU students about the curriculum and the overall experience of attending school at IU!

It was designed with the best of intentions, but universally, implementation has been rough. BUT, this semester has definitely been better than last semester and it seems like our feedback is really being considered. I think pass/fail is also contributing enormously to student happiness and success. People are always willing to help you learn material, or share resources. I have really also been impressed with how easy it is to connect with professors, even at other campuses, on any issue. I've had several experiences with emailing a professor at 8:30 PM and getting a response within 10 minutes. And if they can't help you, I've found that they reach out to others for you directly, instead of giving you the contacts, which is just astounding. I think next year will be much smoother for the class of 2021 (largely due to the class of 2020 😉). Overall, I am much happier than I ever imagined I would be in medical school!

If you have more specific questions I didn't touch on, please let me know!

It has only been three weeks for me but the waiting is killing me. I haven't heard back from my other interview either. Not knowing is torture.

How is the required lecture attendance? Thanks for all the information.

Not popular. From what administration has said, it will be re-evaluated by the appropriate committees throughout this semester and possibly amended.

I'm not in yet but it's not my top choice specifically for that reason.

Wait...lecture attendance is required with the new curriculum?

Is there PBL?

And are students ranked internally?'

Also, when do students take step 1?

Do you know if they'll make this decision before we have to make our final school choice and drop other offers?

That sucks that it's required. But @alfie94 how much time does your class spend in lecture/class per week? 20-25 hours?

Yes; ranked in Phase 2/3 only as far as administration says; April with new curriculum

Last semester, yup. This semester, about 10 in lecture, about 10 in small group doing CBL/TBL

What are your approximate hours in class/small groups like each day of the week? For example when does your day usually start/end?

Hey guys. What is the interview format here? Also, do they participate in mmi?

Just looked at my status. Currently under consideration. Is that just a placeholder to show that all of my documents are in or is that a "hold"?

Mine says the same. I'm pretty sure that is just a placeholder and they send snail mail to accepted students.

Hello! Does anyone know if they accept post-interview application updates?

From what I understand, the class at IU is so large that everyone has a good chance if they invite you to interview.

Yeesh, then I need to work on my interviews. Third application cycle here, and I've interviewed each time.

For interview day where did you guys get a 3x5 photo of yourself? Kinkos? And anyone know what the Gary campus is like? That's where my interview is.

I literally could not find a single business that printed 3x5 photos, so I printed a 4x6 at Walgreens.

It's sort of annoying we have to do that don't you think
There was a kid at my interview day that didn't measure it exactly. The interviewers were furious. They literally had security escort him out of the room and told him not to even think about applying for residency within the IU health system. 😉

In all seriousness, it probably doesn't matter. But I still cut my down to 3x5... because to me it was worth it to spend a few minutes being annoyed to give them what they asked for.

I ordered a 3.5x5 from a printing place by my house. That is the old fashioned photo album size and some places still have it as an option. I didn't trim it or anything. I felt like that was close enough so I turned it in and no one said anything about it.

Instructions say "A photo no larger than 3x5." It just has to be smaller than that size and you're fine right? Did anyone have any major issues due to their photo not being a certain size?

That was me! jk

I went to walgreens near the fort wayne campus. Asked them to take a picture with my cellphone, downloaded it to their kiosk and printed it out. They let me borrow a ruler and scissors to cut it myself. 32 cents and a quick process; also became friends with a super friendly worker at walgreens...shout out to her!

I turned in a 4x6 and got accepted. Maybe I'm a rebel, or maybe the ADCOM just has better things to do then measure our photos. They want to know you, not your ability to cut paper or color within the lines. Who knows though, it's a pretty crazy world right now.

any accepted OOS peeps with no ties to Indiana willing to share LizzyM? I applied here because one of my mentors went here and talked very highly of her training- not sure if this is a strong enough reason to be seriously considered though.

sorry everyone- one more question: can the dean of students evaluation and the legal disclosure be scanned and e-mailed? Or do these need to be physically mailed?

<3 you all

You need that for the interview? Or did you get accepted already

I had my school mail the dean evaluation in. As for the legal disclosure form, I physically mailed it in too. Both showed up as checked off on the portal a few days later.
