2016-2017 Medical College of Wisconsin Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Current M1 here so I can't speak much about Step 1 prep. I have heard we are slightly above average as a school on Step 1, but I don't have the numbers off-hand to back it up. I do know that they foster a lot of study and prep groups lead by an M3 which many people participate in. Our tutoring services in general are superb for group session or 1 on 1.

The biggest thing I can weigh in on is the research - the fact that you don't have to compete with undergraduate students means that opportunities are very plentiful. I have dabbled in basic science, education improvement, and global health. There were advisors interested in taking new students in each of those fields. We also have the Pathways program that encourages research in other fields besides just basic or clinical science.

Best of luck!

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response. This will definitely play a big role in my decision!

Can current students comment on ease of getting involved in research and how the whole process goes?

Like, should I start reaching out to professors now or is that ridiculous/a faux pas?

Forgot to ask this on interview day but, on average, how many activities per week are mandatory? Also, is a certain amount of attendance required to honor in a class?

Thanks!

I would say it's pretty easy. There are a few different ways to find people to do research with, but one of the easiest ways IMO is through the summer research program. There's a document that goes out early in the school year with a LOT of faculty member's names and research projects/interests. You can just shoot them an email and set up a meeting, and if they are able, they'll most likely agree to work on something with you. Otherwise, you can just look through the website and try to find someone with similar interests as you and reach out.

I don't think you should or need to start reaching out now. If there is something that you REALLY want to work on, you could go for it. Otherwise, you don't need to.

During anatomy, which ends in the beginning of Feb., you have lab twice a week, which is 2-3 hours each time. You can miss if you really need to and your lab mates are cool with it, but don't take advantage of that. That's just messed up. There are clinical skills classes once a week during M1 and some of M2 year that are required. For half of both M1 and M2, you have to go to clinic one half day per week. There are also scattered mandatory sessions for various classes--maybe one or two a month. I think that's about it.

No certain amount of attendance required to honor in a class--unless attendance is mandatory for that class, obviously.

Anyone know if they are still sending out IIs? I called in a month ago and they said that they are interviewing through march.

I received an II on Thursday of last week. Complete 09/13, OOS. The dates offered were 03/10 and 03/31.
They also stated this in the email: "We anticipate that on the date offered, we will be interviewing for the few remaining spaces in our class and for placement on our wait list."
If it's true that they interview through March (and not April) then the 03/31 date may be the last date. Pls don't quote me though or give up hope. I'm sure a few more IIs will be given out, especially if ppl accepted elsewhere withdraw.

Hope that was helpful!

Does anyone happen to recall when the committee is meeting next? I need to plan my alcohol intake accordingly.

Why do I not get the rejection letter? Complete 9/21 and deadly silence.

So do we really not have to give them an answer after an acceptance until April 30th? No refundable deposit to hold our spot or anything until then? The other school I got accepted to required a "refundable" deposit within 2 weeks of acceptance that will be returned if we don't attend and let them know before April 30th

Were you just accepted today??? And it's a $100 nonrefundable deposit to hold a spot

No, I was accepted recently but a friend who was also accepted thought we had to send in a deposit to hold our spot before April 30th whereas I thought I remember them telling us it just had to be by April 30th

The Deposit form they sent me says "To hold a space in the entering class of 2017, this form and your deposit must be received by April 30, 2017."

I also interviewed for Central Wisconsin campus. Interviewed on 02/16th IIRC. Alternate list isn't a death knell yet. I am still alive at my other 3 MD interviews so there is hope still.

Is it possible that they were only interviewing for the waitlist since it's so late in the season?

For those of you who were waitlisted, I believe MCW has very active waitlist movement later in the year. You've definitely still got a shot.
