2016-2017 Oakland University (Beaumont) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@wonder12 it seems Oakland B is very very mission focused, I wouldn't pay so much attention to the stats as long as your somewhere in the school's ballpark

The admissions stated that they are more concerned about the fit of an individual's experiences (holistic aspect) to the school's mission so i think as long as your stats arent crazy low you will have a shot! Just out of curiousity what are ur stats?

Their mission appears fairly generic, so I guess it's hard to gauge how well I fit. 😕

"The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine is a collaborative, diverse, inclusive, and technologically advanced learning community, dedicated to enabling students to become skillful, ethical, and compassionate physicians, inquisitive scientists who are invested in the scholarship of discovery, and dynamic and effective medical educators."

Seriously! That's a very generic mission statement for a place that is reviewing us for fit. Like maybe something more specific would help? For example: "we're looking for individuals dedicated to serving communities."

I feel like they might do that on purpose to see what applicants choose to talk about in their secondarys...I'm still not even sure what they're looking for in their applicants either tho lol

"We will not dismiss, averaging, or combining scores. All MCAT scores received from AMCAS will be considered. We will use a holistic review process and are interested in many factors, including an applicant's academic and leadership skills, meaningful medical experiences, extra-curricular activities and level of commitment. While test scores are important, they are only one of the many factors we'll be considering."

so does this mean they average mcat scores? my highest is a 504 so idk if i should submit this secondary

For anyone with an II, would you mind sharing what days of the week this school does interviews? I have an interview fairly close to Oakland at the end of September, and it would be nice to have this info. Thanks.

There weren't any September dates when I signed up for mine yesterday. They had Friday's in October and a couple Thursday's in November.

From what I saw, all Fridays!

Oh well never mind. September 30th was the only date in September when I signed up. Did not notice the Thursdays.

Anybody else submit in June and still haven't heard anything?

I am in the same boat and was wondering if it would be worthwhile to submit an update that would include a continued upward gpa trend and a new medical job? Or is it usually bad form and wasted to use my one update before an interview?

Any idea if this school pays attention to in the area emails? I will be flying out to MI for an interview at WMed and it would be nice to save a little bit of money.

WMed and OUWB are about 4 hours apart, so im not sure if that helps your planning or not....maybe send them an email? they seem pretty responsive

Edit: It's like 2.5-3 hours, oops!

I know they aren't quite neighbors, but they are certainly closer than I live to either of them, and renting a car for a day or two would be easier than repeatedly flying to MI!

Hi Everyone! I'm a current M1 student at OUWB and I used to really appreciate when current medical students would take some time and reply in SDN and provide some insight (and so I'm here to help you guys!). I can verify that interviews take place on Fridays (Sept interviews are on 9/9, 9/16, and 9/30)

Also, the OUWB admissions team does a great job finding students that are not just academically qualified but fit our school's mission (I know that sounds generic but there is a priority at this school to not just produce competent physicians, but genuinely compassionate ones; if you look at last year's SDN forum for this school, there was a link to a youtube video to a presentation that Dean Folberg gave ... I don't have time to dig it up so if someone here would be willing to do the heavy lifting, I'm sure folks in this thread would appreciate it). I can attest that my classmates are some of the smartest, hard working, and GENUINELY caring people that I have the privilege to know.

I'll try to monitor this thread a few times a month to see if there is any questions I can answer for your guys.

Also, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this school and my classmates and I'm saying this when our first exam is a little more than a week away!

Hi everyone! I'm an M1 at OUWB. Just wanted to say I was complete on August 18 last year and didn't receive my II until the end of December, so don't lose hope! OUWB really thoroughly reviews your entire application before giving out IIs, acceptances or rejections. At our interview, they told us something like "your entire application is reviewed by 7 people." As for fit, I think Dr. Folberg said it best when he explained how anyone can be brilliant, but not everyone can be compassionate. Good luck this cycle and I look forward to seeing some of you on campus next year 🙂

Here's the youtube link from last year's thread. Enjoy!

An interesting tidbit that I'm sure some people would be interested in knowing - OUWB Class of 2018 had a 100% first-time pass rate on Step 1! I believe national average sits around 94-95%.

Sounds like they recruit hard working, genuine individuals. Hard workers always pass step 1 -- the very smart ones that think they can get by on less studying are the ones who end up failing it!

Thanks for posting this! Damn 25% already filled!!! 🙁
:whoa::whoa::uhno: this was why I (we) have been worried abt. In just less than a month a fourth of the iis are gone. Imagine by november what'll happen. On the bright side this interview tracker is an excellent method of communication. :pompous:

Haha I wish more schools had this option!

Well to be fair most of the applications are sent in July August and September so it makes sense that a fourth have been sent out. These initial ones are probably the quickest as well because they are looking at their first priority list

Yeah only 117 so far! Not bad at all. Those must be some of the very top applicants plus many IS, even though they are a private.

True but still.

are there any advantages to choosing the new requirements vs traditional (previous) requirements?

should we pick the one that would give us a higher reported GPA?

This question was asked at the preview day I attended and they said that it doesn't make a difference at all. And I don't think that would matter much since they see all your grades anyway

yea it says "on hold" on my app portal and i got an email. It appears its just me lol

Would it be okay to upload a document as an "other" document type to explain a failing grade to them? I didn't use their optional essay for this originally.

Ive heard that unless you have a really good reason, it can come off like you're just making excuses. I personally wouldn't but that's up to you to decide.

anyone else on hold?

Did you get an email saying you were put on hold / did they change your online portal? What does it look like? Still radio silence here -____-, probably cause MCAT. sigh

yep i got an email that said i was on hold and then it showed on my portal. but i cant find anyone else this happened to LOL i dont know how to feel

if anyone is on hold that means that a clear decision was not made by screeners which there are 2 and it is sent to the dean of admissions who will decide on your application
That doesn't sound too bad! It sounds more like another section of review rather than just being set aside for now. Hopefully it results in good news!
