2016-2017 Oakland University (Beaumont) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know when we might be notified of scholarships? Was anyone offered a scholarship when they got their acceptance call?

Has anyone updated the SAIL account? I don't know how to go about that.

Does anybody know how many acceptance offers OUWB makes out of their 500 interviewees to fill their class of 125?

Not sure if this is the right place to discuss such a thing, but I wanted to get the perspective of those who got in/already at OUWB.

I'm an in-state applicant and I am trying to choose between Wayne vs. Oakland. Has anyone here picked OU over WSU SOM? and if so, why?

Wayne Pros: more established, cheaper 31K, better clinical opportunities, better research opportunities, P/F/H, attendance not mandatory.

Wayne Cons: Bad administration (I hear), and they're changing their curriculum next year (positive/negative?), 40 min drive from my house, and they charge for parking.

OUWB Pros: Newer, nice campus, nice area, 20 min drive from my house.

OUWB Cons: Newer school, EXPENSIVE 57K, I hear attendance is required most days, and suburban clinical experience.

Can anyone elaborate or improve my pros/cons list? Everyone I talk to says Wayne is the better option, but for some reason I feel like I'd just fit better at OU. But, I have to be realistic and 31K vs. 57K tuition is nothing to bursh off. Also, I have not heard anything back regarding scholarships yet.

WSU is cheaper by 26k and yet you're worried about being charged for parking? Not sure if srs lmao

Dude, WSU all the way. Not even a question.

Lol I just wanted to be comprehensive. Parking at Wayne is around 1K a year. Obviously, it's still cheaper 🙂

Mind elaborating why you think WSU is the better option, other than tuition-wise?

How does accommodation work for OUWB students? Are they going to create a database where incoming students get to find roommates and available houses?

For those deciding between Beaumont and Wayne, I think that both are great schools but it ultimately depends on what you want. Wayne offers a multitude of urban clinical experience opportunities (along with the nearby DMC to work with physicians). On the other hand, Beaumont is in a safer suburban location and still offers student-run free clinics as well as other volunteer opportunities. Also, it depends on if you want larger lectures or a more individualized learning setting. Wayne's class size is almost 300 (with is a pro or a con depending on you) and attendance at Beaumont is often mandatory although offers more group-focused learning sessions. I was in a similar situation and, while both are amazing schools, believe Wayne personally suits my public health interests and desire for a large campus in a busy setting.

As much as it breaks my heart to do so..I am withdrawing my interview spot for one of you guys! I loved what I read about this school but due to financial reasons, I won't be able to attend. I can truly see that this school selects students holistically and would be a great fit for me. Hope it goes to one of you amazing people! =)

What do applicants generally include in "thank you" letters?

I have two questions regarding my upcoming interview:
1) Which of the two hotels do people usually stay at? Courtyard by Marriott Bloomfield Hills/Pontiac or Hawthorn Suites - Auburn Hills? Any comments/feedback/recommendation about either place?
2) What's the name of the free, student-run clinic? I can't seem to find it on the web? Is it South Oakland Shelter by any chance?

I think the hawthorn is closer!
Also i am not sure what the clinic is called but it's not South Oakland Shelter. That's a program that houses the homeless around Oakland County!

Current applicants can probably answer your first question better.

I'll answer your second one. Sorry this is probably longer than you needed, but both SOS and the SRFC are great examples community engagement at OUWB and I get questions about this kind of stuff a lot. So I think this will be relevant to a lot of people.

SOS is a homeless shelter and service agency. That's not our student run free clinic proper, but we do have students volunteer and offer health screenings there a few times each semester. We do blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, etc. and there is an APM faculty member there. It's a really great experience - you get to do the screenings yourself and interpret the results with the help of the physician faculty. It's also a bit slower paced so you have time to ask questions, sit and listen to the doctor counsel the patient, etc. The doctor who usually goes is really wonderful and one of my favorite teachers at OUWB. Some students also do their capstone/Embark project at SOS.

The student-run free clinic is run through the Family Med Interest Group. We don't have our own independent clinic - we collaborate with a community health clinic in Pontiac. We send students one evening a month currently, though the SRFC is a pretty new program so it may grow in the future (don't take my word for it, I'm not in FMIG). The patients are usually already being followed at the clinic, we just see them after normal business hours. Basically, before any patients show up, all the med students (M1-M4) and the doctors for the evening discuss the patient charts together. A patient shows up, then M1s/M2s do intake, basic history, and vitals. M3s/M4s take a more detailed history and physical, go talk with the physician in charge, then go with the doctor to discuss diagnoses, treatment plan, etc. with the patient. At this point, the patient gets a prescription for refills or anything new they need. The clinic also has a pharmacy, so M1s/M2s work with pharmacy students to fill those prescriptions the patient, then bring the meds to the patient and talk with them about how to take them, side effects, drug-drug interactions, etc. At the end of the night, everybody gets back together to go over the charts again and talk about what was done for each patient. Also a great experience from what I've heard - sounds like there have been some interesting cases, a diverse patient population (Pontiac has a large Latino population), and it is definitely in an underserved area.

Thank you for posting this. Stuff like this makes SDN worth it. Especially helps school-specific threads.

Can any current students tell me about student organizations that Oakland has? I've looked all over the website and can't seem to find much about student life at all. I would love any input on this.

Hi everyone! new poster here. For those of you feeling discouraged: i am canadian, and applied to this school EXTREMELY LATE (like, decemeber late) but I managed to receive an interview offer the other day! don't get bogged down if you haven't heard anything yet! keep the faith! good luck everyone 🙂

Sorry if it's been discussed, but what's the best way to get to campus from downtown Detroit? Uber? Car rental? Shuttle? Bus?

Thanks for all and any advice!

So I just found out that if you get the special rate you can't take the shuttle, so since you stayed there as well, do you remember if there were any ubers available in that area?

Isn't it $75 without the shuttle or $94 with the shuttle?

Interviewed in October and still haven't heard anything yet. I know they said no news is good news, but yikes this waiting is painful. Anyone else in this same situation? Otherwise, thoughts on my fate?
