2016-2017 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In regards to previous posts about not being scored. I'm pretty sure most people understand that apps are scored and then ranked for interview selection and beyond. The questions asked previously but which were never addressed were those questioning timeliness of scoring. It seems as if those who submitted recently have been scored quickly while some of those complete back in July have not been scored. Does anyone know if the scoring process is ranked as well according to stats?

I think it has to be ranked, but I doubt it's strictly stats.

Another possibility is that their system isn't the best and we are actually scored.

Does UM have someone official to ask questions? I know UCF has REL on SDN

It's not addressed because none of us will ever have the answer unless we're part of the admissions committee. It's been known that it is not a linear process. Miami is probably the one of the most transparent schools and was nice enough to share their scoring breakdown. For most schools, you don't get s***. There is a formula that each school follows from the time an application gets to them, when it's reviewed, and to the decision that is made. Perhaps there is a ranked list of when you will be scored or some were just unlucky to have their apps sent to an adcom that has no time to evaluate the app. The variables are endless, but IMO, even if we knew in detail how this process works, it's still completely out of our hands now.

Chill out everyone and grab a beer! Still a long ways left to go 😉

Does anyone know when UM starts giving out acceptances? For some reason the app says that they start October 5th...I know that October 15-17th is when AMCAS officially allows universities to give out accpeptances, however, I heard from some people that UM starts before, but don't make it "official" or post it anywhere until the 17th. Does anyone have any experience with this? Why would the app say October 5th

Its a mistake. Oct 17th is the first day.

seems so far away lol do you know how they accept people? I know its something like every two weeks they accept a certain amount.
Committee meets 10x and pulls 20 names each time is how they explained it. They will explain it to you after your interview.

Has anyone here that applied to other florida schools received any interview invites for any other florida school? Idk if this is the place to post this but i'm just curious lol UM is the only school in florida that has invited me to an interview.
i had an FIU interview couple weeks ago. no other FL interviews. im IS. UM is one of my top choices 🙁

Ya, I remember during my interview they explained that to us but it makes no sense to me because 20 interviewees 10 times equals 200 students. But they admit like 380 (per the powerpoint we got during the intervie) I doubt that 180 people go on the waiting list, so I feel like they would have to receive more than 20 applicants every time.

For the prompt asking for our "most meaningful clinical experience," does it have to be in a clinical setting or can it also be the most meaningful patient contact experience we've had? I was thinking of writing about growing up with my grandpa who had Alzheimer's. He was definitely a patient but I did not have this interaction through a clinical setting. Would writing about this topic still be valid? Any U Miami students, please input!

Not sure if that's a good one to use for a secondary prompt because if you go by that standard, then most if not all applicants have significant clinical experience. While I believe you 100% and agree that these experiences can really impact our growth, I don't think adcoms are looking for that. They want to see what you have done outside of your academics and family (e.g. volunteering, EMT, scribe, etc. in a clinical setting).

However, I am sure there are exceptions with those who use this kind of experience to write an incredibly compelling essay. I think this might be better suited in the optional prompts or PS, but even then, my pre-health advisors always urged me to stay away from elaborating on family deaths as a way of showing passion for medicine. Adcoms probably think it is an overused and unoriginal topic even if it is true.

It's your call. If you don't have other clinical experiences to highlight and can write about this topic in a convincing manner, then go for it. Best of luck!

Should it say your application has been scored or your application has been reviewed?

Sent from my LGMS631 using SDN mobile

Do they send an email to those that get on the alternate list and do not get accepted? Or does their application just say pending until they get accepted?

I believe that when they say clinical, they actually mean in the healthcare setting (not family) - I had a similar concern when I was first mapping out my experiences last year

I really don't think this matters... you'll get an email if they want to interview you.
I just wanted to know what other people's statuses said because some applicants were posting that the portal explicitly says their "application has been scored"

The admissions process is probably going to take longer than average after Hurricane Matthew hits...so we're going to have to work on our patience and try to be a little less neurotic lol

A few weeks after your interview, your portal will change to something saying "a final decision has been made" most likely on a Monday before they actually notify applicants which is generally that following Wednesday (Decision days that they've listed). They call the people who are accepted and email the folks who were placed on the alt list. At that point, you need not check the portal.

I got that message on my portal yesterday: "A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on your application. Contact the admissions ofice...if you do not receive a telephone call, an e-mail or a letter within seven days."

Makes me think (hope!) that they will in fact update us tomorrow

Has anyone been complete since early July and still hasn't been scored? Wondering if I should contact admissions or not...

How long after the interview did you get the message?

Same! Me too!

How long after the interview did you get the message?

I interviewed in Mid-September and got it yesterday.

I have the same message (only just now checked) and also interviewed mid-September

Hi there.

Congrats to those of you with II's!

Sorry if this has already been asked, but this appeared on my portal sometime between Monday and today. Is this the "scored" update everyone has been talking about?

"Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Committee review. Applications that have been reviewed and scored by the Committee will be considered for interviews during the entire interview cycle (September - April)."

Completed mid-July 2016.

This is quite strange because I have a similar but slightly different status that I got at the end of last week:
"Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their evaluation score from the Admissions Committee. You will be contacted by email if you are selected for an interview. Interview invitations are extended between August and March."

I was complete around 9/20. What does it all mean😵

They are messing with our heads!!!! Lol.

I feel like the hold status would say some derivative of the word "hold" right? LOL

That's so funny that they have different status messages that literally mean the same thing! And no, I think that after your interview, the status on the website will not say anything and all further updates will be through email. I do not thing there is a message that means hold. It is basically the generic "you have been scored. applicants that are chosen to interview will be alerted from this date to that date etc."

Did anyone hear back yet after the "final decision" message? Should we actually contact them after 7 days if we don't or should we just wait until October 17th?

If you check out the 2015-2016 thread, there was also a "your application has been reviewed. At this time, a decision has not been reached on your application" status. -this was considered the hold status I believe. They may have axed that status for this year, but thought I'd throw that tidbit of info into the conversation.

No, I did not! what do you think is better? To wait till october 17th?

Just wait lol, they will let you know. I think it would have been impossible send out invitations yesterday since the university had to close due to hurricane Matthew, and will remain closed until further notice (most likely until Friday though).

True, they will probably be closed way past friday though. The hurricane srike thursday night..actally around friday at 2AM so they will probably reopen monday.

why wont they score my app? lol

Which status do you have?

I hope it's a good thing!

According to last year's thread, a high number of individuals with this status (like 16/20 from what I could determine) got an interview. There is a different status ("at this time a final decision has not been made on your app") from last year that was considered a hold. Obviously, this is almost pure speculation as there could have been 100's of others not on SDN that had the "good" status from last year that did not get an interview. Anyway, I hope for the best!🙂

wait so is the other "you've been scored" status considered the 'not good' scored status? I thought they were the same...
