2016-2017 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got an email saying Miami has extended their secondary deadline and are still reviewing applicants for interview spots. I didn't submit earlier because I ran out of money and didn't submit it when I had enough because I figured it was too late. So, it worth submitting now? What say you, SDNers?

FYI

"Dear University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Applicant,

We wanted you to know that our secondary application deadline has been extended until January 20th, 2017.

The Class of 2017 is not full and our committee is still reviewing application to award interviews. We hope that you will give them the opportunity to review your secondary application."

+1, also wondering

I mean I'm submitting mine! lol. Aside from your account, what could it hurt? The email nearly sounds as if they need more applicants anyway lol.

Ok, twist my arm.... I find it hard to believe a school that receives 8k apps is having trouble filling seats
True that. Perhaps their system had a glitch so they're extending the deadline. Who knows. But I'm taking it as a good sign lol.

Did people who already submitted also get that email ? I got it, but my app also says its ubder review.

MS1 and 2 classes all had a test this morning, sorry if it's been quiet on our end. I'll try to address a few of these at once.

Hey y'all,

Got notified yesterday (01/12) I'm on the alternate list. Stat summary: 3.4 GPA, 516 MCAT, great recs and some cool EC'S.

I interviewed back in early December. I'm writing a letter of intent with some updates (research! Job! ) But I'm a little unsure about:

1. When to send it

2. If I should call or visit the office (I live nearby) to ask about where on the list I'm located.

Anyone got any advice?

UM is probably my number 1 choice so I'm still debating if I should make that clear in my letter-- I have to be sure of that since I can't say that to more than 1 school.

From my own experience, letters of intent (I will come if you accept me!) are only useful if you have another acceptance to an demonstrably better school. You have good stats, so maybe that's your case, but you didn't mention if you have other acceptances so I thought I'd throw that bit out there.

#1 - Accept your spot on the alternate list with a quick "yes" email.
#2 - Send an update letter with stated interest maybe in 2/3 weeks. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, but it annoys a lot of people first, so to speak. As someone else mentioned, I'd do some (more) research and talk about all the reasons you loved the school and everything you look forward to being a part of.
#3 - Pretty sure it's every school's policy to not divulge where exactly on the list a student is. As far as I know, we don't have an A list or B list. Feel free to call (I wouldn't stop in) or e-mail regarding your ranking, but I'm sure they'll just tell you that they can't say. We have great waitlist movement, so I think a few meaningful update letters will look good, and that's pretty much all I did.

Hey everyone! Was just placed on alternate list yesterday. It is my #1 choice. They asked for confirmation in writing that we still want to stay on the alternate list for consideration. Should I just reply that I would like to be on the alternate list now and send a more detailed letter of intent later?

I recommend this. That way you can formulate a good looking letter that gets added in the file format that you want. As I mentioned above, and as other accepted students have reiterated, letters of intent aren't worth too much unless you're accepted at a higher ranked school (and not like #42, you know?). Send a letter of interest instead, stating all the reasons you loved the school and everything you look forward to being a part of.

Hey- for those of us who need to travel a long way for the interview:

1- Are there any on-campus options/ ways to connect with students willing to host?
2- Is there an easy way to get from the main downtown campus to coral gables?
3- Does UMiami offer shuttle pickups from the airport?

Looking for any suggestions on how to save money while in town for my interview (mid/late february)

1 - Yes! Someone from my class should be reaching out to you about student hosting. If someone hasn't reached out prior to 2 weeks before your interview, send me a PM with your name and I'll hook you up.
2 - The main campus is in Coral Gables. The med school is up at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The metrorail runs between the two for pretty cheap with good frequency.
3 - Nope. The metrorail can take you into Brickell (from the airport), where your student host most likely lives. Uber in Miami is incredibly cheap though - I've taken uberpool from the airport for as cheap as $4.50. Uber and Lyft are definitely cheaper than cabs. The metromover is the cheapest option, but it takes a special person to try and navigate a foreign city's metro system after a flight on the day before an important interview.
*Edit: switched metromover to metrorail, clarified that it runs to the airport*

Any news on scholarships?

Scholarships are allocated both as students are accepted and after the matriculating class has been settled. I got mine with my acceptance, and I got off the alternate list, so if that's your situation, don't think you don't have a chance! We also offer diversity scholarships that you'd need to apply for; here's the website: http://www.mededu.miami.edu/OSFA/Scholarships.htm.

Anyone know if UM has a waitlist in addition to the alternate list?

I spoke to an admissions staff member (not sure of their title) who I didn't quite understand: they made it sound like the alternate list is the same pool as the interviewed applicants-- reviewed every so often, best ones get accepted, etc.

Thanks for any info you can give me!

The alternate list is the only list we have, and it's exactly as you've described. Since we work on a scoring system both before and after interviews, they like to accept the top 20 (I think?) on the list, regardless of whether they've been on the alternate list or just had their interview. The entire pool is evaluated by the committee at every meeting, which I think is every 2 weeks or every month or something.

Is there a FB group yet for accepted students?

I think it was recently set up, I'm sure invites will be going out soon. Patience! We had a heavy 2 weeks of class culminating in an exam today: next week will be more chill for us, and a lot of Student Gov work will probably get done then.

I only know question 1 - in The Hub, there's a tab called Planning your Interview. In there, there's an email to find a host.

Hi there everyone. I received a call from the Miller School of Medicine this past week and I have been ACCEPTED! Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction for housing in Miami and the Facebook group? I have been trying to find housing that is not in Brickell since I will be paying my own way and simply cannot afford the rent there, but am at a loss since I have heard the Jackson/Dominion Towers definitely are NOT places students want to live. I cannot confirm/deny those statements, however.

Some stats if anyone now or in the future is/will be curious:
  • sGPA & cGPA of 3.88
  • MCAT of 511

What's The Hub?

The Hub is an app the Miller School of Medicine uses for applicants to obtain information about the school while applying. It can be downloaded via a link from the email inviting you for an interview.

Can't do anything about the facebook group yet, sorry, but I can help with housing. A lot of us living in Brickell are also paying our own way, so don't think it's impossible if you really want to live here. If that's something that interests you, definitely look into renting a condo from someone directly. They're usually cheaper, and the owners don't raise the rent as often, but you do have to pull outside contracting if you need maintenance. Other cheaper places include Little Havana and Coconut Grove. You could live in Coral Gables if you want, but it's probably half an hour from the school.

Don't live in Dominion Towers. Every time I see them I wonder who lives there, since they look so run down from the outside. The Health District itself is a bit sketchy - a lot of homeless people. I haven't heard about much crime, but it's not somewhere I would like to walk around at night.

Just got an interview. Anyone have any info about what the interview day is like/the atmosphere on interview day?

Congratulations !! your stats if you don't mind. what dates are available to interview ? Thanks.
Um...520 MCAT and 3.93 GPA, and thank you 🙂

The dates they offered me were two at the end of January and then through February. There may have also been a few March dates available, but I didn't really look at the later dates. Basically they're still offering dates within a few weeks those and there's plenty of date left.

Thank you so much, I appreciate it. Do you know where one could look for that? Renting from someone directly? I assume someplace like a realty.

You could use a realtor, yeah. If you don't live around here though, a website like this might be easier: http://www.miamicondoinvestments.com/miami-condos-for-rent

Miami moves pretty quickly in terms of real estate. Most people sign leases between a day and a month before moving in (yes, seriously, a day). Even if buildings do know that they'll have a vacancy in July or August (or June, if you're MD/MPH), you won't be able to see the unit (only a similar one). Since you have time, I'd wait until second look to start really looking around, that way you can a) find a roommate and b) talk to current students about where they live, what they pay, how they got their place, etc. I'm not the most knowledgeable about condos because I rent an apartment, and I went through the leasing office of my building (I really didn't want to pay a broker's fee). It's good to look into these things but seriously don't worry about it atm.

Unless you're moving here next month, sit back, relax and enjoy the time you have left before classes start. There's plenty of stress then: don't do it to yourself now.

Meanwhile, I'm still sitting pretty here waiting to be scored since August :yeahright:

You should have received an email to contact if you are interested in hosting. If you do not have that email address, please personal message me.

Would anyone care to elaborate on their interview experience? was it laid back and conversational or very question based (ethics, scenario questions, etc)?

It's an hour long one on one with a faculty member. Mine was about 70/30 conversational (mostly pertaining to me and my application) to scenario based questions. The conversational stuff was normal stuff you've encountered if you've interviewed elsewhere. The scenarios were all medically based and I think were used to gauge my ability to think quickly and act pragmatically. My interviewer and I both felt we had a lot more to talk about, the hour really flew by. Despite my positive feelings about my interview I still ended up waitlisted. Anyway I'm sure you'll do great. Good luck!

Dropped by to answer some questions but it seem like @gcuddles has them all covered. Sorry I've been kinda absent, we a big exam then our class cruise (which was amazing and super fun and totally not a reason to choose a medical school but is a damn good perk) so I've been preoccupied.

Feel free to PM me with questions, or post them here and tag me (that way I'll be sure to see them).

I don't consider any question a stupid question...if you just want me to pep talk you about the school or alleviate some random fear I'm more than happy to help! I was a low gpa, highish mcat from south Florida, but have friends who fall into most applicant categories.

One of my biggest annoyances when applying was that I didn't have someone to ask the uncomfortable questions to. So if you have any super awkward questions (for example "I hear Miami is an aweful city and everyone hates it") let me know.

😉

Looking for places that basically sit on campus, I have classmates that live in The Modern and Somerset Towers. The area does appear to be minimally sketchy but they walk to school damn near everyday and they've had no problems. Decent facilities and I haven't heard them complain about neighbors. Those places are the closest you're gonna get unless you find a random house around the area...

Rough estimate but I'd say 60-70% of the first years live in Brickell or Downtown.

Seeing as many of you were complete WAYYYY earlier and still haven't heard back, I'm wondering how they will handle applicants who they sent the secondary to last minute? Realistically, they've only got maybe 3 more weeks to go through our applications and send out II since they finish interviewing in mid-March. That would require them to speed up a process that seems to have been taking months previously...

Pretty sure they do many silent rejections. I refuse to believe it is a "random" process as they claim. As in a RNG spits out an app regardless of completion date and stats. What's annoying to me is that they make the process seem very transparent, but many people complete in July/August still haven't been scored and they turn around to ask for more secondary submissions. They've most likely reviewed most of the files and silently put us in the equivalent of "hold or continue to review" piles. They can't be that inefficient considering schools that receive 10k+ apps are wrapping things up. At this point, I'd gladly take a rejection if they don't think I'm a good fit for the school instead of them dangling a cookie over my head :yeahright:.

Ok rant over. I'm jk miami I still love you :biglove:

Was totally shocked to receive a II here today. Had pretty much written this school off at this point (and pretty much every other school I had yet to hear from)

What was your status on the portal before receiving an interview

Hey all! I looked at my application portal today and was completely shocked to find out I had been offered an interview (never received an email - and even checked my spam folder, recently deleted, etc). I called admissions just to confirm, and was told an email had been sent out to me January 12. My two questions are: 1. Has this happened to anyone else? 2. How long after ranking your date preferences did you get a confirmed date? Thanks in advance for your help! Good luck to everyone as the cycle begins to wind down!! 🙂

No to the first for me but for 2. I ranked last night when I got home from work and got my date first thing this morning so you probably won't have to wait long.
