2017-2018 Cleveland Clinic (Lerner)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I noticed that 2 people on last year’s thread reported attending SL but not ultimately getting accepted. That’s kind of surprising to me because wasn’t last year the year they accepted ~60 total? I wonder if it’s possible that both of them acted unprofessionally at SL, or maybe their PIs made poor comments during phone calls? Otherwise I’m not sure why they wouldn’t have made it off the waitlist since @adcom101 has said SL invite is kind of like a high WL. 😕
Being invited to SL (but you are not in the first 32 accepted) indicates that you are high on the WL. That is why I have written in my prior posts that if you attend SL, treat this like a second interview. Be careful what you say or do because there will be feedback from current CCLCM students. Be professional. Be humble. Show sincere interest for CCLCM. This is your chance to see if the CCLCM environment is right for you. If you appear arrogant and indicate that you have been accepted to this med school or that med school etc, that is NOT going to be good! I doubt that it is from any PI comment because if that is so, you would not have been invited to SL.

There were people last year who were accepted from the waitlist that did not attend second look. There were also people from the waitlist that attended second look and were not accepted. So I think there is no solid way to tell your chances - just a waiting game!
A lot has to do with the final decisions of the first 32 accepted students. This will obviously determine how many are accepted of the WL.

Thank you so much for this information! Your posts have been very appreciated throughout this whole process 🙂 so do you know if PIs are called prior to applicants being invited to SL, or prior to any WL applicant being accepted like they are for the original 32 acceptees?

I don’t know for sure but I suspect that PIs are still called before any accepted student is notified by CCLCM.

Does anyone have a sense of the average debt burden for a CCLCM graduate? Looking at their cost of attendance page (I can't link to the page because of SDN restrictions, but a breakdown is available on their site) it looks like ~$89,000/ year total. Taking out the covered tuition (~$61,000) that still leaves ~$28,000/ year in expenses. Over 5 years that would come out to $140,000 in debt. Am I missing something in that calculation; that number strikes me as kind of high?

I know that the CCLCM has you submit an application for financial aid- do they give out additional grant aid based on need? I had assumed that aside from the tuition grant, the cost of attendance would be covered entirely by loans.

(Also, I'm aware that there are a limited number of merit-based grants for cost of living, but I'm more interested in your average matriculant who does not receive a grant of this sort).

I don't think COL in Cleveland comes out to $28,000 a year. That seems pretty high. Usually the COA listed on schools' websites is the upper limit.

You'll probably be taking out closer to $17k-20k per year depending on your living expense + rent. Rent is in the $500s if you live with a roommate and in the $800s if you live alone.

Thank you both! Just to clarify, they don't offer additional need-based aid towards cost of living then?

Thank you all for your responses. That avg debt estimate is especially helpful!

When do we think movement will start here?

for those that went to second look, i think as early as this week per last year's thread.

Does anyone know when they tell us who gets the full CoA scholarships?

I was offered a stipend sometime last week after second look. From the call, I got the impression that they're offering stipends earlier than in previous years (I had read that they rolled out in May in past years' threads), but I'm unsure if they reached out to everyone already. Additionally, it seems that CCLCM has a 50% yield so it's very possible that someone who was offered a stipend will withdraw, and it will be passed to another student. I was hoping to recieve an email confirmation before withdrawing from my other schools, but I am 100% going to CCLCM in the summer! :biglove:

If any of y'all are still debating between schools and want someone to talk to, feel free to shoot me a PM. Good luck to all those still on the alternate list as well 🙂

Thanks for notifying us and congratulations! Hopefully they haven't given them all out yet!

Would anyone who got accepted here be willing to answer some of my questions via pm?

I was recently taken off the waitlist! Movement is beginning 🙂 good luck to everyone else!

Congrats! Did you get an email, or just check the portal. Also did they give you any indication on how many they've taken off the waitlist (I'm going to guess no but just curious)?

Who else is tired of checking this page and having no updates to this 9 month process? 😛

I know a decent number of people I met at second look have chosen to attend other schools, so there should be some movement happening. Good luck/congrats to those who get calls!

I think it's the full week of July 9th, as the acceptance letter said that's when we would matriculate. White coat ceremony is on July 15th

Did you commit to CCLCM? If so, we'll definitely have to share a pint at Mitchell's sometime 😉

Will students on the WL be informed when the class list is finalized? Is it safe to assume there will be no further WL movement this cycle?
As in the past, there will be an email that the entering class of 2018 is now full and set. Until that happens, I suspect that there will be still some movement.

Would any accepted/current students here be willing to read my secondary essay on my research. It's currently very rough as I just spilled out whatever was in my mind but before revising it I was hoping to get some opinions on whether I was giving too much/too little details and just feedback on the content in general.

Thankful to have been accepted a couple days ago 🙂 I'm sure I sounded maniacal over the phone, but this was truly my first choice. Even happier for the person who will now be able to attend the other school I was going to, but not entirely enthusiastic about. I'm also not sure if I am in the 'second' wave of acceptance or not. Excited to meet you all

This late in the game, is it safe to assume there will probably be no more WL movement?
