2017-2018 Des Moines University (DMU-COM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was pretty annoyed. To paraphrase @Goro: The white coat ceremony isn't for you, it's for your family.

What are they going to do at the end of second year? "Give us the coats that you have been wearing for the past two years, then we'll spend 3 hours slowly giving them back to you." I hope it's not mandatory.
I think we get new, better ones. I know its odd but no clue where we would've done it since the civic center is being renovated. It is what it is. My family will be just as happy in a year than they wouldve been this past fall. And hell I'll know I can take the coursework at the point and I'm actually going to become a doctor

For anyone interviewing in the next couple weeks, I'm more than happy to answer any questions you may have. SDN has been good to me this cycle so it's time to pay it forward :)

How long does it take for the admissions committee to make a decision on a applicant after interviewing?

II today! Tentatively picked 2/23 but am still deciding if I should pick a later date.

I'd expect a few weeks...2-3 maybe? but there have been people who wait longer. I heard just under a month

I interviewed Sept 14 and was accepted October 2 so just over 3 weeks!

Could someone give me an idea about what questions to expect during the 30 minute interview? Also, it looks like interviews run from 1:15ish to about 3:30. What do we do in the time either before or after our interviews?? Thank you!

I got the basic questions (y u wanna be doctah?!) and my least-favorite: “Tell us about a time you failed, and what you learned from it.” Ugh.

The time before your interview is specifically assigned for flop sweating and nervous bowel movements. The time after the interview is for running to your car, elated that the stressful part is over (only to realize waiting for weeks for an answer is much worse).

You will have a tour/lunch/presentations before. If you are in the early group, your tour will be after the interview and then you can leave

Does anyone know how frequently and on what days the adcom meets? I was browsing through this thread and acceptances are all over the place in terms of frequency (sometimes 2 days between bulks of acceptances, sometimes 2 weeks) and days (I've seen acceptances on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). Maybe I didn't look hard enough and there is a pattern that I missed... any input?

I was told ~3 weeks?? I did call this morning and they are only interviewing on Thursdays and Fridays now.

Ohhh, gotcha.

I saw someone who interviewed on 1/18 and got an acceptance on 1/24. I guess I was just super hopeful that my group would get that quick turn around time too. And since I haven't seen any acceptances since 1/24, I figured it's technically been 3-weeks since then so maybe... just maybe we'd hear back today.

This whole waiting game is giving me anxiety. I literally can't stop stalking past threads and posting questions. LOL. I just wanna know already!!!!!

When did you interview?? I am interviewing 2/23.

Lol I interviewed 2/8. I know. I’m probably too much right now. I should probably at least give them a week lol

- I’m a potato.

No worries! I waited six weeks to hear back from one school when they said it would be two at the most and I started worrying days after I interviewed. I'm sure the time will fly by! (-: How did you think your interview went?

To those who have interviewed: what impressed you the most about DMU? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Very traditional and discipline DO school; and very focus and caring front office in admin. Year in year out one of the top 10 DO school in the nation.Their "goodness" may be their curse too ; as they constantly losing many high potential acceptees who would jump ship to the MD side.

I loved Des Moines in general. Very safe, up and coming city. I loved how welcoming and friendly everybody at the school is. I just recently returned for a tour and I still loved everything. It's an excellent program and a top generator of primary care doctors. I'm from Wisconsin, and DMU is well known around here for producing excellent doctors

I work at a lab in Missouri and in the past 7 years we have had 2 students go to DMU. One is a 3rd year and he already has offers for an emergency medicine residency in California. (didn't know students could rotate out there!!) The other student is a PGY-3 in an ENT Residency (very competitive). It seems that although DMU is known for PCPs they also have the potential to crank out world class specialists. I also agree with @DrDazl the people are extremely friendly and the city is very nice thanks to the insurance industry haha.

Patiently waiting but got another hold email yesterday...has this happened to anyone else? Got my first hold back in December.

Does anyone know if DMU has filled their class already for this cycle...? If not, any idea how many spots are left or stats for acceptance rate on interview day? Hoping my interview next week won't be for the waitlist.

Has anyone applying for a Stafford loan gotten their info from DMU yet? I'm totally lost as to what I need from them to apply for mine.

does anyone know if there is a second look day here and if so when that will be?

Honestly, I think the personality/fit that DMU looks for is why so many end up as PCPs. DMU seems to push a really caring/collaborative environment and def has a "family-first" mindset. I think because of that, almost everyone is super chill and seems to value more work/life balance which PCPs kinda have in spades.

Agreed. People just need to look at their match lists if they believe DMU is only capable of producing PCPs. They push out orthopedics, neurosurgery, dermatology every year. Im pretty interested in Rads right now and DMU places students into ACGME University programs every year.

I received an email saying I was waitlisted. Nothing in the mail yet
I just wanted to mention for you, and anyone else interviewing, this is probably going to happen more often now. I interviewed around this time last year and I don't know of anyone that I interviewed with that was accepted immediately. It's getting towards the end of the interview season and so outright acceptances are going to start to peter out.
HOWEVER, all of those people (4, in fact) that were in my interview group that were wait listed are now in my class. :) The wait list was very mobile last year. I was second quartile and I was accepted at the end of May, which still left 2 months for the other 2 quartiles.

Tldr; I've said it before, but I'll reiterate because the wait list struggle is real-- All is not lost. :)

Interviewing this Friday. If we are waitlisted, will the email tell us which quartile we are placed in or do we have to call and inquire ourselves?

You'll get an email once the interview season is over (mid to late March) telling you which quartile you're in. I don't think they do the ranking until they've gotten their full wait list roster.

Just curious, is the interview style here generally pretty laid back? Should I be expecting any questions related to current events in healthcare, politics, or ethical situations?

I didn't get any questions about any of those. I only got Why DMU, Why DO, Why Medicine. The other questions were app specific. Feel free to PM me!

Crossing my fingers that we might hear back from the 2/2 interview today/ this week. I had no idea they had a ranked wait-list though :dead:

From my understanding, their wait list isn't necessarily ranked, more that you are put into "quartiles" that they then pull from!

I'm sorry if you've already answered this, but I was under the impression that we aren't told what quartile we're in until May (I think one of the students at my interview mentioned this). Is this not true?

That may be a more accurate time frame for the quartile decision. I don't have the email saved, but May sounds right.

Do you happen to know how many people are in each quartile, or does it depend on the year?

I was in the 3rd quartile last year and got in during May. Many of the candidates are borderline MD, so I think that accounts for much of the movement. Not sure if they'll adjust this year, as last year they blew through their waitlist and interviewed candidates in May (according to last year's thread).
