2017-2018 Hofstra University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I grew up about 20 or so minutes from the Hofstra campus. It's a pretty new school but has a bunch of connections to the North Shore LIJ Hospital system, so if you have any intention of living on Long Island or the surrounding areas after graduating then it would be a great school. I also know a few people who currently go there and they love it.

Do you know if they have any connections in the city as well? I saw that they have a tiny class size 99, so I can imagine you'd get a lot of opportunities

Got a II earlier today. Seems like 1 date in late November available.

Could anyone give some insight in terms of how the interview day is going to be and how the interview sessions are (format, intensity.. etc?)

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

"Two one-on-one interviews with members of our faculty" as per MSAR, congrats on II btw

I interviewed there last week! It was a very non-stressful interview day, at least for me. It ran from 8am to 1:30pm. First was breakfast followed by a talk from the dean about the school's history and unique curriculum they developed. Then it was the two interviews back to back. Seems stressful to have them early in the morning but it was kind of nice getting them out of the way. They were scheduled for 40 mins each, and both of mine ended relatively on time (they had people knock on the doors to let them know there was 5 mins left). My first was with a faculty member who asked tougher questions about personal growth/challenges faced: e.g., a time when working in a group was challenging, a weakness you have faced and how you worked through it, etc. I found it pretty manageable to answer them. My second interview was with a MS4 and definitely more casual/conversational, she asked me about my backstory/why medicine/why Hofstra, but mostly we chatted about her experience at the school and what she liked about Hofstra. After the interviews was a presentation from Student Affairs, watching a video about the school, a presentation from the Office of Financial Aid, lunch with current students (I had MS2s), and then a short tour of the medical building. There was also the option to meet with the dean for diversity and inclusion for interested students after the main portion of interview day had concluded.

Dean said at Interview Day that they like keeping the class size small at 100 so there are always more than enough opportunities for clinical training sites within the Northwell Health System. From my impression most of Northwell Health is concentrated on Long Island, with some parts into Queens. It seems the only Manhattan training site is Lenox Hill Hospital on the Upper East Side.

I had an interview scheduled for December 11th but I received a phone call today about a cancellation and I was able to move my interview to this Friday, October 20th. Does anyone know if Hofstra is rolling admission? Like will it be beneficial to me to have an earlier interview date?

Not sure if it’s rolling - but it definitely won’t hurt to have an earlier interview. Read up about the school and start getting ready.

On their website, Hofstra mentions that they begin sending acceptances in December. Post-interview they mentioned it would be in mid-January. Do any recent interviewees know if they updated to December instead?

I had my interview there a couple weeks ago; they told us then that the first acceptances would go out around mid-December and everyone will receive an update around mid-January (I think).

Interesting. For my cycle, we didn't get any updates until mid-March unless we were accepted directly post-interview.

And here I document the crickets I have been hearing... give me some love!

Anyone who interviewed or is attending Hofstra know/or heard what the post-interview acceptance rate is like?

Does anyone know if during the interview the faculty member and student have access to your AMCAS application and grades?

Yes. My interviewers didn't have my app literally sitting in front of them, but they told me they had access and looked over it prior to the interview.

If we didn't get our interviewer's emails should we ask the admissions office for them or should we just send a thank you note to the admissions office through the portal?

They said during my interview to post your thank you letters as an update to your application on your portal. In the "Document Type" dropdown, there should be a Thank You Letters option.

so did you just write a general thank you note to the admissions office or did you thank your interviewers explicitly in that document? thanks you!

Will the recent endowment and associated scholarships be available for the next incoming class, or will that money not come into play just yet?

Also curious about this.

One of my interviewers made it seem like it would be available for the next incoming class.

Anyone know if acceptances will start coming out in November like last year?

So are we expecting to hear back next week? I looked at last year's thread and they got notice back on Nov 17.

I interviewed mid-September and they told my group we would hear back around December-January.

I have an interview this upcoming Tuesday. Does anybody know if they have any student hosting options?

Am I the only one who got grilled/hardcore challenged on everything I said during one interview and then had a casual second interview???
