2017-2018 Howard University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First II from here yesterday! Extremely grateful! MCAT: <500, cGpa and sGPA 3.3 played basketball through undergrad and over 7,000 hours employed clinical experience. URM. This is my second cycle and I almost gave up hope but what is for you will be for you!!! Hang in there ! Much love. (Also my very first post been trolling this site for like five years lol)
I couldn't agree more with what you said, what is for you will be for you! Congrats on your II, good luck! when were you complete?

I am a current MS1 here at Howard! Good luck, everyone! Let me know if you have any questions; this will be a longggggg process. Feel free to ask anything!

Hi! I am a late applicant and I have been working on the secondary for 2 weeks. The responses say to please explain/briefly describe without a word or character limit. I think I might be overthinking it, but how long would suggest my responses be?

I wouldn't stress too much about a specific word count, just make sure that you thoroughly answer each of the questions. Adding in too much fluff to reach a word count would probably do more harm than good. I just looked back at my application and all of my responses were about half a page single-spaced except for the question about living in a medically underserved area (1 page) and the additional information box one (1.5 pages -- I had to explain my GPA trend). I would really stress that you should get that in ASAP since you're so late in the application cycle, I turned around my secondary within 48 hours of when I received mine.

I am doing it right now as we speak at work. I'll have it submitted today because I need to be at a school dedicated to minority physicians and community outreach.

I sent them an update & it took them about 1.5 weeks to reply and update my application. Since they're reading so many applications I made it short and sweet with bullet points. I included any new volunteer work, a new job, and any other extra curricular activities like workshops, conferences, school orgs, etc. I'm also going to update them on graduation/grades this month. Hopefully that helped you guys. I sent my update by email to
hucmadmissions@howard .edu

Hey guys! I am currently in my first year here at Howard. If you need any help or need to ask any question, don't hesitate to ask. To those who have been accepted, make sure you guys start working on the health requirement ASAP because you don't want to be scrambling at the last minute trying to complete them before orientation. To those waiting for interviews, secondaries, etc., the application process is a glorified waiting game so hang in there and try to enjoy the holiday season.

How is DC?
Is Dr. Leffall still at Howard?

Haha yeah Dr. Leffall is still working in the hospital. However, I have yet to see him. Also, D.C. is D.C. I love living here with the only downfalls of traffic and how expensive it is to live here

For the interview, I would suggest definitely reading over the mission statement and the history of HUCM. It helped me give sincere answers on why I wanted to attend Howard. Lastly, try power posing to build your confidence (I got this grey's anatomy), be yourself not someone you think they want you to be, enjoy the interview day and don't be afraid to ask questions

I've been volunteering in the PICU at the hospital for 4 weeks... never mentioned it in my application though because i just started... should i update?

hey Thanks for opening yourself up. How well do you think Howard equips you for residencies nationwide? I mean i Know you are still a M1, but how do you feel about the quality of the education that you receive? Are there enough role models that encourage you? Is the environment nurturing? Do you feel like you are provided with the necessary tools to succeed?

Hey guys got my interview on the 12th, will be my first one anyone got any advice would love to hear it
Congrats on the interview!! Do you mind sharing your stats and when you were complete please?

I was complete mid-November, so I'm sure it'll be January or February before I hear anything....stats in the 490 range and gpa 3.2, non-traditional student...still hopeful, since there ppl in the 490's that have been accepted and ppl in the 500's not accepted, hard to see a trend with this stuff

I was complete mid September and still nothing.

Who do we send an update to? Is there a particular e-mail?

II for 1/10!
Long time browser, first time poster.
Got my secondary submitted early September but received my II about a week ago.
Mcat 500, sGpa~3.7, recent hbcu graduate
Not much on volunteer experience but I'm confident about my prospects!
Glad to finally correspond with you all, anybody else got an interview on the 10th?

Like you said, I am only a first semester M1 so I can't really speak on how prepared I am for residencies. However, the quality of education is very strong as the professors are very knowledgeable and respected in their given fields (especially anatomy!). The professors are very open to students coming by their office to discuss any information. For example, I went to a professor office before my last exam, and the professor gave me a 2 hour review on everything covered in lecture. Granted you may not get this same extent of support from every professor, but every professor is here to make sure you get the information needed.
As for a nurturing and welcoming environment, you cannot get better than Howard

I am! And congrats on your interview :highfive:

I think I might just be a little anxious but on my app it says, "Interview not yet scheduled". Is that how it is for everyone?

Hey y'all. Did anyone apply for MD/MBA? and if so, have you have back from Howard yet? I submitted secondary 09/01

Hi all,

I just received an alternate list letter from Howard. Interviewed back in October

Is this the same as a wait list or is it different? Any advice on how to move from alternate into an acceptance ??

Would it be dumb to update Howard on a recently completed pre-req? At this point, I am just fishing for ways for them to give me back some news on the status of my application lol

Has anyone called to check status of application? If so, what did they say? Did they take the call well? Were they nice? Did they actually give you an update? 🙂

I have been complete since July and I have emailed with an update and status question. The response I received to my application status question was just the timeline for admissions that can be found on the website. Hope that helps!
