2018-2019 University of Miami (Miller)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I never got the invite, but was able to login with my amcas number and birthdate. I completed and submitted the secondary. Some other people here have done the same. Idk if there's a problem with their email system, or I wasn't supposed to complete the secondary, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

I can fill out the secondary, however, when I emailed them they said to wait until someone looked over my primary...I really think their system glitched somehow.

How many of the 30 points do you all think a school ranked higher than UM on USNWR and ranked "most selective" as opposed to UM’s "more selective" designation on USNWR? I ask because my school had a Barron index of 2 on the publicly available 2009 Barron Selectivity Index List as opposed to Miami’s higher ranking of 1. My school’s selectivity has drastically increased since 2009 though, its SAT ranges are even higher than UM’s, and the actual acceptance rate is lower than UM’s.

Well, my school isn't even on the list. I think you're good bro.

where are you even getting this info?

Btw, FSU isnt on that list and @wesleysnipes said it got 15/30, so it may not be that damaging.

Unfortunately, we don’t know whether these top 20 scorers are all within 1 point of each other or something like that
UC Berkeley got a selectivity of 2 even though its undergrad is very prestigious. This list is nonsense. Did they say they used this 2009 list or do they use their own internal rankings?

I assume they use the Barron’s 2018 college guide, which is not publicly available and has to be bought in order to view. I’d also expect Berkeley to have a 1 rating in 2018.

It's a list published by Barron back in 2009 with a list of "school selectivity." It's worth anywhere from 3-30 points on your application. Sounds pretty pretentious and elitist to me tbh.
Lol agreed, I could only afford my state school and even though it’s a good school and regarded pretty highly it has a selectivity of 3. It doesn’t take into account that getting into the biology or business or engineering programs is much more selective. It’s annoying that they put so much weight on something like that.

Totally agree. I got into UM for undergrad but didn’t go because it just would have been too much money compared to the FL state school I ended up attending. The fact that it’s gonna make a decent difference in my score is kinda frustrating, to be honest.

So is it a well established fact that going to UM gets you the top score? I just wonder how small the categories are as you get high up in the rankings.

Just to take USNews Rankings as a general comparison tool, what about schools that are like Top 15/Ivy Level? I would assume (and hope lol) that someone from one of these schools gets a higher score than UM which would then probably get a higher score than majority of undergraduate schools in the country that are NOT ~Top 40.

Also, I wonder if this official rating system also takes into account grade deflating schools like WashU, Cornell, JHU, Princeton, etc?

It is interesting to see how different schools view undergraduate schools in the admissions process, some don't care at all while others clearly have a numerical system to account for differences.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but can you send in updates after submitting the secondary? Also, I saw online that they prefer you to submit the secondary within two weeks of receiving it, but given the fact that many people don't submit at all, do you guys think that submitting after two weeks won't have much of an impact?

Guys so the highest school score is 30 pts. Wesleysnipes confirmed that UM gets 30 pts. FSU which wasn’t even on the 2009 Barron list got 15 pts. Wesleysnipes said that no name state schools got 5 pts. I’d reckon that being on the Barron list will give at least 15 points

Let me know if they score you so I can decide if I should do the same, lol.

For those who submitted your secondary- I tried to double space between each paragraph of my essays, but when I preview it, there's no space between the paragraphs so they all just look one jumbo paragraph. How did you guys deal with this?

Me? I hit the submit button.

what is the portal message when you've been scored? right now it just says under review for me

I have a question for people who were not born in the US. I was born abroad, and my parents became citizens when I was a minor. I, therefore, do not have a citizenship # because I got citizenship automatically. should I leave this part blank? or put my passport #?

i think a previous thread said to put your parent's citizenship number, that's what i did

My portal says: "Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their evaluation score from the Admissions Committee review. You will be contacted by email if you are selected for an interview. Interview invitations are extended between August and March."

does a language class count as a humanity?
[**Behavioral Sciences include courses in the: Humanities, Bioethics, Psychology, Sociology]

I regret submitting this so early. It's been two weeks, and I'm still not scored. Thankfully, this secondary has helped with ones that have come later, but not having a chance at Miami honestly hurts.

as long as you are born in the US, there is no citizenship #

Do you think it's detrimental to submit the UM secondary earlier rather than later?

I'm in the same boat as you, but only took CASPER 1.5 weeks ago, so I'm wondering if that's also delaying things

My casper score should be in for all my schools now. I’ve been marked complete this past week at other places as they’ve finally gotten my casper. I even got an II at a casper-recommended school. I can only hope that casper has been the cause of my delay here.

Asking this again since my first question wasn't answered - does Miami allow for updates after submitting the secondary?

Hahhaha so it's not just a me problem with the spacing issue?

You've inspired me to just hit submit as well.

I was freaking out about not having spaces so I tried to clearly separate out my activity like XYZ at This Place, Jan 2015-Aug 2018: Here I did things. -- ABC at This Other Place, Dec 2014-Feb 2016: I did some other things. Then submitted the app and looked at it completed and my chronological lists look AWFUL and all the other questions had the spaces between paragraphs... so long story short, any spaces you put in should show up in the final app

Just got a secondary....how much do they actually pre-screen or did I just meet the cutoff for gpa/mcat?

Still not scored. I've gotten more updates from schools whose secondaries I submitted afterward.

Edit: it’ll have been 3 weeks by this Friday

Im not surprised given how much extra they have to read on the secondaries

I submitted my secondary on 7/30 and it still says under review.

So I just submitted my secondary today and it was only after looking at this thread that I realized that for the chronological list sections we were suppose to include a short description (I just listed the experience, where it was done, and the dates as I did not read the pdf thoroughly).

I'm pretty frustrated about this because I specifically called and asked if they wanted that and the lady I talked to just kept responding shortly "Just do what the application says to do". Well given the actual secondary application just says to list thats what I did, but going back through the pdf after I submitted I see that it says to also include a short description.

Do y'all think it would be worth emailing them about this and potentially sending an update with those descriptions and maybe including my interaction/misunderstanding with the person on the phone or do you think it will be fine? I put alot of effort into the other portions of the application where I filled out all of the optional essays pretty thoroughly.

I'm just disappointed after all the time I put into this application I missed a small detail like that....

How much and how did you guys write for the optional essays? I feel like I'm just listing what I did. Am I supposed to reflect on how watching the world cup improved my ability for noticing minutiae details? I'm hitting under 100 words for a lot which makes me feel weird since the final word count is like 500

for sports especially i did not hit anywhere close to 500. probably around 150.
for hobbies as well it was maybe 200. the other optional ones i filled out were average maybe 350

The hobbies and student orgs one are probably my highest word counts but the rest I’m struggling to hit 100. Did you go into much detail about each of those activities. Even for the sports one I only had around 60/70

I was complete around mid-July and just saw your post about this. I submitted without reading over the PDF because I triple check everything before and after pasting it in. Since it wasn't in the actual app I wouldn't worry about it. It only says to "list" the experiences on the actual app so I don't think that it's worth it.

sports i just talked about being a student-athlete but i didnt go into that much detail because i didnt see a benefit in explaining that much. i think if you find something valuable to say there's no harm in adding words but i wouldn't try to hit words by adding fluf.

I did not put descriptions and I’ll be going to orientation tomorrow for the MD program.

Don’t sweat it.
