For real I need to know cus I am not trying to put down a $500 deposit for a masters program and then end up getting in. It's not refundable.

i already put a 1k deposit down for one school that i lost and another 2k for my current school while I'm waiting on Albany. put it down to be safe. med school is an investment.

edit: both are non-refundable

Exactly. I put down $1.5k on 3 master’s programs last year (I kept getting accepted to “better” programs but not before the deposit deadline of the other ones). Never got any of that money back. Applying and preparing for medical school is unfortunately pay to play, even for those of us that don’t have the money (or the credit limit in my case) 🙁

Not saying it isn’t tough, just know that a lot of people go through this and you have to make the best decision you can with the information at the time, whether or not it is a “refundable” decision.

It really is an elitest system i get that lmao. it's definitely a lot of money for me also but just know it'll pay off in the end.

Whoops, I meant to quote Dr.EMD in my post too! And I meant “you” as in like the general you, not futuredoctor123456789 specifically lol. We are definitely on the same page. As long as we don’t give up, we will pay it off in the end.

FACTS! i also was a little neurotic and looked back in last year's thread.. AMC rejected people in November... lawd help us all

@ Albany Medical College..... if anyone from the admissions committee, any faculty, or any administrators are reading this. we need alternative list movement to start today. not next week. not the week after. and definitely not next month.

-Sincerely, an exhausted pre-med whose systolic blood pressure rises 10 mmHg every day that goes by without movement. I'm probably around 180/90 right now, do you really want a heart attack on your hands? thx

This hits home on so many levels.

I doubt there has been movement. With the amount of people saying they got on the AL on this thread it’s not likely or statistically possible. In my opinion.
i wonder how big their waitlist is. and how many people usually get off of it.

I feel like I remember seeing on MSAR that 57 people accepted to be on the AL and 10 or so got off. But this is just pure recollection.
From MSAR:

"Waitlist Information
Typical number of waitlist positions per cycle

Typically, around 200 are offered a position on the wait list.

Number of acceptance offers granted to applicants on the waitlist

Not Provided

Waitlist procedures and information

Following AMCAS Multiple Accept Deadline for choosing a school when applicants have multiple acceptances, applicants are contacted and asked if they would like to be kept on the waitlist."

MSAR isn't always the most accurate. Also due to current circumstances all that is tossed out the door I feel. Maybe I'm just too optimistic.
I agree. This is a pretty big tangent, but if you are into statistical modeling/data science at all...you might find it interesting that many models have completely blown up in the past few months. This goes for consumer spending, resource allocation, workforce efficiency, etc. Past data is now almost useless in predicting the future because of COVID and all the changes it has brought.

In finance, COVID is the ultimate "black swan event"; "A black swan is an unpredictable event that is beyond what is normally expected of a situation and has potentially severe consequences. Black swan events are characterized by their extreme rarity, their severe impact, and the widespread insistence they were obvious in hindsight."

And yes, I have been really bored during quarantine and been doing too much reading lol

Why are you guys using MSAR to get waitlist info ? At interview day they gave us a folder with the stats of 9817 applicants and a 3.3% acceptance rate with 142 first year class. If we multiply 9817 with 0.033 we get 323 students that were accepted. That’s more than double of their class. How Covid will affect that remains unknown but history is on our side!

I was quoting MSAR to say it doesn’t really give us any usable info. But yep, they said on interview day that they accept 2-3x their class size, depending on the year, so your math matches up!

Here's my concern...covid has caused a huge economic shift. What if they have to compensate by decreasing the incoming class size? Penny for anyone's thoughts
I would personally think the opposite. If they are short on money, wouldn’t they want to increase the class size to collect more tuition, but then keep resources (supplies, facilities faculty, etc.) at the same level?

I’m all for some spicy conspiracy theories...but they said in the alternate list email that their final class size would be 140 this year (just like previous years).

This is a fair statement. I thought about this as well, but let’s think about it. Which savings would the school make if they accepted fewer students if the will

1. Have the same number of professors
2. Use the same facilities
3. Use the same staff/faculty
4. Don’t provide housing (basically no profits)

Unless you all can think of something else I missed please add. Also, how else would it benefit them to reduce their likely income. Assume they reduce the class size by 10, that’s about $2,000,000 in 4 years. That’s a pretty big loss if you ask me. of course unless I’m missing other expenses that would be saved.

The only thing that is giving me hope at this point is that they extended the AL form deadline by 32 hours. To me, this implies they got a lower-than-desired response rate. So the AL is probably smaller than in previous years and they will likely accept more off of the list. Purely speculative, of course.

My non-medical friends asking me how the alternate list is going:

Or they just had technical difficulties, but I like your theory better haha

If it makes anyone feel slightly optimistic, the current Groupme chat has 99members. It’s pretty active in terms of people leaving the chat(ie. they got accepted elsewhere i bet)
is the group me something that albany directly invites people to or is it made by a student? just trying to gauge if it’s an accurate portrayal of everyone accepted or SDN only people accepted. also according to albany they have been pulling from the alternative list already

Already pulling from the alternate list? How did you come by this information?

i wanna know how you know also 🙁 that they've been pulling people off the list

If it makes anyone feel better, I was looking through the 2016/17, 2017/18, and 2018/19 threads and dozens of people were getting acceptances throughout May, June, and even a bit of July in some cases. So it make look a little bleak now, but everyone should just keep their heads and hopes up! 🙂
