Complete email received on Sep 19th and nothing after that 🙁

I called them about a week ago and they told me they do wait until March to send out rejections... so it’s gonna be up in the air until then basically lol

Lol. What's funny is that I intended to add stats, but I haven't had coffee yet.

cGPA: 2.8 (not a typo) 🙁
MCAT: 520

Secondary submitted: 9/24
CASPer not complete until: 10/4
did you do any postbacc or smp or have an upward trend?

I worked on a Liberal Arts degree many years ago. Part of the poor grades were from being active duty military at the same time and being in the field (so not able to always go to class or do hw). I had two semesters that were filled with nothing but F’s as a result of having to leave school for life but after the withdraw deadlines. So, my GPA from that time period is probably about a 2.0. I also had to leave school with only a semester left to complete my philosophy degree. Very frustrating at the time, but hindsight is 20/20.

Fast forward about 10 years and I went back to school for two science degrees; I have been full-time and maintained a 4.0 GPA over the last 3.5 years.

So, a major upward trend and distinctly different life stages.

But with something around 230 credits, there’s no real budging the cGPA.

Well you truly deserve that acceptance. Congratulations!

Hi folks, just recently had my interview and got some facts from adcom:

They only will be accepting a class of 120 students this year. They will have interviewed about 130 students by the end of this year (only one more interview slot left 12/10, I believe). There will be having about 20 more interview dates next year but keep in mind they only interview about 350 students with a maximum of 10 students per interview date. Adcom stated that they had somewhere around 8500 applicants this year so if you receive an interview that means you're part of the 4.11% they really liked. According to adcom, they have extended somewhere between 100-110 offers of acceptances so far. She made it sound like most people interviewed early will be getting an acceptance. However, she also emphasized that they do go through their waitlist extensively; however, it is NOT in order. This is because they try to match someone from the waitlist with the person who withdrawals based on background/stats/experiences. In other words, say the person who dropped is URM-Puerto Rican from the West coast they will try to fill that spot with someone with that similar background. Finally, I believe adcom also stated that either 84% of last years incoming class or 84 students (don't recall which fact) had only received a single acceptance from a school, which was Howard.

Interviews: You have two interviews of about 30-40 minutes each with a faculty, alumni, or doctor. At my interview, one interviewer read my entire AMCAS application and secondaries because they asked me specific questions especially from my LOR. The other interviewer stated this is a blind interview and did not have access to my GPA/grades/LOR. However, from what I saw it looks like they have a standardized scoring sheet that they mark on a scale. Overall it was pretty conversational but a few tough questions that really made you think.

Dislikes: The least favorite part of my day was the fact that adcom refused to state what was the average Step 1 score for students. I did not like that they couldn't transparent because it felt like they were hiding something. Another thing, the facilities look pretty old. The simulation lab looks pretty up to date but overall the building has that grandma-like feel. I asked my interviewer what he wished to change about the COM and he said an even more advance and up to date simulation lab.

Hope this clarifies some of your burning questions about HUCOM.

That was a real honest ADCOM. Thanks for sharing. Having a hard time finding any stats on their average STEP1 scores, match % rates, & places they match to.

Thank you!! What are your stats if you don’t mind sharing.

There's still some interview spots left! Have you sent a letter of interest or inquiry?
No, I sent an update letter in September but didn't receive a confirmation. I ended up calling the office after a month to see if they have received my email. They emailed me after that confirming the receipt of my update letter. The title of the email was 'Re: [SPAM]' so probably my email went to their spam folder. I'm not sure if would be too early to send a letter of interest. Also, it might end up in there spam folder again 😕

Yes, I agree. I can suspect that the reason they don't talk about it is because it might not be a high average. However, the school isn't really to blame. Pre-clinical years is pretty much independent study, which is the norm across other medical schools. Ergo, if you're interested in a certain specialty then your best bet is to be a good student.

Also I realized, this was the only school that has allowed applicants to see cadavers. Other schools have said no because of privacy and legality issues. Not sure the validity of their statements but its was really amazing having that opportunity.

Adcom stated they offer a range of scholarships to students. One big one is for students with high MCAT score and high GPA. She also stated that the top 2 students in their class receive full ride tuition. Those students who are ranked from 3-10 receive 50% of tuition waived. That's a pretty amazing incentive for students to strive towards.

One last thing: The number one question asked to adcom/current students was with regards to housing. According to one of the current students, if you get accepted they provide you packet of available apartments that medical students have utilized in the past. One of them stated she currently lives in housing provided by Howard for professional students and faculity. She pays about $1200 for the studio and it's about 2 minute walk from the COM.

Sorry for the extra information, but I think it's important to get the full scope of information before deciding if the school is a good fit for you.

Was the adcom saying that the scholarship is retroactive? I guess I mean when are those top 10 students determined and by what metrics?

Thank you so much for the information! Now I have a realistic reason to feel worried!

They didn't say how they determined it and if it was retroactive. I assume that as incoming M1 they use the mcat/gpa model; but moving foward M2-M4 they use your class standing.

The reality is that there is a lot of applicants and only so many spaces. I think they are looking for a variety of applicants that make their backgrounds "unique" in order to make their incoming class diverse. I spoke with a faculty member and asked them what they are looking for in a student. His response was that you can articulate your goals and vision both orally and written. Not sure what exactly that has to do with the overall selection of interviewing or accepting applicants, but it felt like if you weren't giving generic responses then you should be good.

I do have to stress, one interviewer asked me what makes me unique from the other applicants. I mean it's such a irksome question because it feels like I'm pitting myself against other qualified applicants with compelling narratives, but I had to come up with something.

Oh I forgot to mention that when you arrive they make you do a write responses to a bunch of questions. The questions felt similar to the secondary but I guess they want to see how you respond in a stressful environment. Adcom stated that they use your responses as part of the process so come PREPARED!

Thanks so much for the info! Good luck! Do you remember if they mentioned anything about re-applicants/ or previously wait listed applicants at Howard?

Sorry, there was no mention of re-applicants or previous WL applicants. I assume that they will be treating everyone equally, but that's my assumption.
