2019-2020 NYU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What do y'all think constitutes a good application update? I got a spiffy new job a month ago removing eyeballz from organ donors which I think is pretty cool but not sure if they really care to hear an update about something like that. Have any of you all sent app updates?

I know it varies by school, but I would send an update with an LOI mixed into the same letter if I had a new activity like that, especially a job. I sent an app update a while back late October and wrote about grade update from summer course, job update like yours, and LOI stuff. My health advisor said it wouldn’t hurt, and thought my stuff was substantial. My pub has also just been successfully pushed to next phase so will be coming soon so I had to update about that as well. I read NYU was receptive to app updates so I went ahead and did it, but it looks like someone else here heard otherwise maybe?

Dean Rivera said they don't really read the LOI or app updates, but I sent one in anyway just in case.

Maybe I heard wrong but I thought he told my group, at least, that if we had updates to upload them to the portal. He did say, though, to not send LOIs because the fact that you applied to NYU was enough intent for them.

pretty sure they said that nothing short of a huge publication should be sent post-interview! i usually err on the side of "it cant hurt" but dean rivera seemed pretty clear they werent interested haha
I sent a post-II update that amounted to little more than expanding on my gap year and talking about making a poster for a conference this spring. I was accepted.

Certainly doesn't need to be earth-shattering.

Wow, congratulations. Thanks everyone for the thoughts. This response may have convinced me haha.

Does anyone have recommendations for Airbnb or hotels during the interview? The hotels mentioned on the interview tab are a bit steep. If you do, please pm me! Thanks!

Yeah I signed up for one, but haven't gotten any info about it. Also I am staying for more than one night, so I need to find lodging.
Ahh okay. Once you get assigned one. You can just ask your host if it's okay to stay an extra night? I let students I host stay extra nights if they need to. I used hosting a lot so know the struggle.

Has anyone had an interview for the accelerated 3-yr MD to residency track? I heard back from the IM program about meeting soon, and have no idea what to expect.

(Also if there is a dedicated thread for this, could someone pls point me in the right direction? )

People who stayed with a student host for your interview: how far in advance did you hear back confirming hosting for you?? The portal says we should hear a few days after submitting the form, but I interview in a week and haven't heard anything yet after submitting the form months ago.

I would maybe reach out to admissions then. I heard back ~7 days before my interview.

People who have interviewed -
Does the day actually end at 4:45pm? Considering booking a bus ticket from Penn station area that departs at 5:30. Not sure if going from 1st ave to 7th ave in rush hour will be doable in 30-45 min. Any thoughts?

You should just walk across - I did! It should take 15-20 minutes and it’s much faster. The day ends on time.

the end of the day is also a casual chat with current students so you can always duck out early if you’re running late! But shouldn’t be a problem walking to Penn, tbh!

On hold since September and the email said they will convey the decisions by November end. Wonder if there is any possibility of getting an II? Anyone in the same boat?
They tweeted at the beginning of the month that there'd be 1-2 more II waves before the end of November so there's still a chance! It might be super slim but it's better than nothing

I received an email saying:

"Though we are unable to offer you an acceptance at this time, please rest assured that you are still being considered by the Admissions Committee for a potential seat in the entering class. We will notify you immediately if you are accepted."

Is this a waitlist? Or they just haven't made a decision regarding my app yet?

This is the "under continued review", a.k.a. post-II hold. There was more info in previous pages.

its a hold (we think)

Has anyone who has received the post-II “continuing review” heard back with either an acceptance or rejection?

Congrats! Do you mind specifying when in December? Their last interview day is Dec 12 and I’m wondering if this is the last wave or whether there’s slight hope for 1 more.

I was thinking the same thing. Their Rs are usually sent out on Mondays I think from what I see on past messages on this thread. If this was last wave then Monday is....ouch

Sent from my iPhone using SDN

The 12th was the last day available on the calendar! The only dates available were 3, 4, 5, and 10, 11, 12 of December.

That gives me the tiniest sliver of hope! Thank you! <3
Not trying to crush your hope but just trying to add to the discussion.

I think today might be the last wave because there are only 4 business days left in November. Tomorrow will unlikely have a wave because they had one today, it’d be silly. So 3 business days. In that case, why not just release it all today? Just my thoughts, maybe I’m mistaken (I sure hope I am haha)

Maybe I can add a small sliver again and just say that I received my invite on a Friday

Omg RIP :bigtears:🙁 Thanks for your response though. Does anyone know how many people they typically interview each day?

Quite literally tears in my eyes lol, I hope there’s another wave Bc if not then why didn’t they just send out Rs to everyone else you know?

That's true, but if they have the resources to potentially offer 120 more interviews I feel like there'd be more than 3 ii's reported on sdn? Maybe not, but I'm crossing my fingers and toes for us! 🙁

I'm a mess too haha, this process is so soul-crushing. Someone said they send R's on mondays? I'm not sure  Just let me love you NYU! :diebanana:
I’m not sure what the dates were for the previous wave, they could have given 60-100 last time and remaining this time. But you could be right and they’re anticipating another wave. I hope you’re right.

Also I feel like at this point in the cycle the SDN hype has gone down, so less people are posting.

You don’t want an II. I think it hurts more to get one and have all this false hope for their 10% post II rate

An II is an II, and it’s worth a lot, especially for some of us who have so few already. 10% post-II is still a great chance. I’d rather have 10% chances than no chance at all
