2019-2020 UC Davis

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just to make sure - Bay Area is Nor-Cal right? Even San Jose/Silicon Valley area is still nor-cal right? Some people told me that Davis has its own map for it considers Nor-Cal but I couldn't find anything.
Yeah, it is. I was worried about this. Made a quick google check and it is.

Anybody entered AP courses for their prerequisites? If so, what are you putting down for the different fields (course type, units, grade, course number, etc).

In the activity classifications (research, clinical, athletics, etc.), does anyone know what "Training" is supposed to mean/is that the same thing as tutoring? I'm trying to talk about my TA experience. Or should I just put employment?

Primary released 6/28, received secondary 7/1, submitted 7/3

IS with some connection to NorCal, but this was not indicated on my primary

Secondary submitted! Probably my only shot at staying in CA. Fingers crossed.

Does anyone know the turnaround time between secondaries and II?

for the activities, is it ok if theres a lot of overlap between our amcas app? should we use stories different from the activities section but have same idea or list what we gained from the experience?

For the activities, are they also going to look at our primary or only the secondary? Should we also be putting a a different viewpoint if we choose the same activities from our primary as to not repeat ourselves?
bump - I think in previous cycles they had a blurb saying "feel free to reproduce comments from your primary."
Now i'm not sure, since that blurb isn't on the secondary anymore. Do people think we need to write a whole new W/A description for the 500 character blurb?? I kind of just want to condense and reword what I already had for those activities :\

I basically did the same that was in my primaries and maybe added or changed a few phrases/sentences

I'm in the same boat, trying to talk about tutoring...I feel like employment is safer but it's probably a trivial difference, they'll see the title/description anyways.

Did you just summarize your primary and tailor it towards Davis? Idk how to write the activity prompt since it seems like they're basically asking for what's in your primary.

submitted my secondary just now. Forgot to convert my quarter hours to semester hours. How screwed am I?

What

Just summarized primary.

Just summarized primary.

did you include any examples to help with the significance/description of your activities? 500 characters isn't enough for me to include anecdotes

Nope, general format was how/why i got into it --> what I did --> what I got out of it.

IS SoCal two ties to SF and Fresno but I wouldn't consider them strong
Primary submitted 7/8
Secondary received 7/9 (this morning)
I was really shocked I passed the holistic review. It must REALLY be holistic then because my stats are crap but I've done a lot of work with the underserved community. Pretty excited to think I have a shot!

What are examples of things that we could bring up in the concerns question? I've heard its usually a bad idea to explain academic stuff, like why you have an upward trend or had to retake the MCAT etc

I retook my MCAT and got a 512 and 124 CARS twice and didn't mention anything because I have no good reason.

But it'd be fine to bring it up if we had extenuating circumstances that gave a good reason?

If you truly believe you have a good reason and your GPA/MCAT was actually really below average then sure, but if it's within reasonable range, I wouldn't bother. Think of it this way: if you explained it, do you think it would increase your chances of getting an interview?

Alright, but I'm not specifically referring to a below average GPA. Just a trend that occurred due to circumstances, which I did bounce back from. I guess that gives me more reason not to bring it up?

I had a similar question earlier! I did some digging in past threads and consensus was mostly do not bring it up unless it’s a serious red flag OR you have a really good explanation that doesn’t like an excuse
For anyone else wondering if they should put N/A in the discuss any concerning elements question, here's what I found in last years thread. Personally I will be putting N/A! I do have a course that I retook, but I think my grade the second time around explains itself and I don't have any special circumstances to explain why I didn't do well the first time.

Thanks. Basically, I had a 3.3 after 3 years of community college. I didn't know how to study properly and was working to help my family with the bills, so I couldn't manage my time. I then transferred to a university and earned a 3.9, which brought my overall to a 3.6. There are circumstances there, but the adcoms do have my transcript and will be able to see everything. Not sure if this is worth mentioning

I personally would not mention this. I retook a course and considered explaining this but grades explain themselves and for me when I retook I got an A. If they’re curious about this I’m sure they will ask you during an interview! Although your overall GPA is fine and wouldn’t have any red flags anyways

Awesome thanks! If a school sends a secondary after screening, then that means they didn't see any red flags on your app?

I would assume so! I know the UC’s do a “holistic screen” before sending secondaries so that could mean different things for each school but I’m sure it’s a combination of stat cutoffs and EC’s

If you're interested in urban underserved communities but unsure if you'll pursue primary care, should you apply TEACH-MS? Also, can you apply to more than one Scholarly Pathway?

I only wrote 211 characters for the prompt regarding our ties to Northern/Central CA. Is this too short? I can't find anything else to say besides the fact that I grew up in NorCal, went to school there etc.

Will they tell you if they reject you pre-secondary invite? Or just ghost you? Not yet worried, merely curious.

for your list of activities, should we just copy our 3 most significant from amcas or is the point new information?

Do yall think it is worth mentioning having a concussion during the last class of the Ochem and biology series and a physics class? I did not get anything lower than a B- that quarter/ my gpa year averages went up significantly after that year? Or is it better to leave it out?

Hey everyone I'm an applicant from last cycle who was admitted. If you all have any questions or want some feedback I would be happy to answer!
Do you have a feel for how much weight they put on having ties to California? I have none and am wondering if it is just a waste of $ to apply

You miss every shot you don't take.

But also they have a record of accepting 85-100% instate for their classes.

EDIT: obligatory not an admitted applicant

Mmm I’m not so sure if you are OOS with no ties to CA how that fares. I’m pretty sure most of their admitted students who are OOS had some times and/or went to UCD for undergrad. Although take this all with a grain of salt I’m just an applicant and don’t know anything for sure either
