I received a UW Spokane acceptance call on Friday!! I interviewed back in November and was SUC until now. I'm still in disbelief.

Just got the email telling me on the alternative list. Does anyone have experience with this for the Spokane Cohort?

Did the email tell you your alternate list position?

This shows the history of people accepted off of the alternate list for each year and separated by campus.

Yes it did! I’d like to keep that exact number confidential, but I’m in the top 10. For Spokane the last 2 years only the top 3-4 spots are brought in.

They’re requesting a new “Foundation Site Essay” to speak towards to desire for the Spokane Found. Any advise/does this matter?

Hi everyone! I created a Facebook Group for anyone who's going to be in the Spokane Cohort for E2020! I would love to add anyone who that applies to. PM me or look for the UWSOM Spokane E2020 Cohort page and I'll you. 🙂
I’m so glad you started this! Definitely got my vote for class president when that’s a thing

I think everyone who is accepted/waitlisted for either Seattle or Spokane has to do this. I interviewed in Seattle and live in Seattle, so I wrote the essay with all the reasons why it would be good for me to stay here. I would think it would be best to write your Foundation Site Essay for Spokane (since that is likely what you selected pre-interview), unless you have a major reason why they should switch you to Seattle. I have no idea how that would work with waitlist spots.

It does seem a little redundant since we had to select interest in either Seattle or Spokane pre-interview.

Wait why do accepted students have to do this?

No idea, but I basically had to redefend my interest in staying in Seattle lol Apparently they make final decisions on Seattle/Spokane placements in March. This is from the acceptance contract on my portal:

"In your secondary application, you designated which site(s) you would prefer for the Foundational Phase. Use the space below to write a statement of 250 words or less why you made this preference, including any relevant personal or professional circumstances. Be as complete as possible. If you do not respond to this prompt, it will be assumed that there are no compelling reasons for you to be at one site over another.

We will take your preference under consideration, but cannot guarantee that the ranking that you provided in your secondary application will be granted. Site decisions are based on space availability, individual need, and the needs of your classmates. Regardless of your preference, the UWSOM Office of Admissions reserves the right to match applicants to either Spokane or Seattle. Therefore, we strongly recommend against making housing or other long-term plans before you learn your site placement this spring.

The process of matching students to the Seattle or Spokane sites should be completed by mid-March. We will inform you immediately thereafter concerning where you will spend your Foundations Phase."

Weird... I don’t remember writing anything and I didn’t see that in my portal just now.

Have you been accepted?

On my portal under Secondary App tab, there is a "WA Foundations Site Preference" where I could select either Spokane or Seattle (selection, not essay). Then when they added the Acceptance Contract tab, it asked for the essay.

weird, also accepted in November (Seattle) and was asked this. Are you OOR? All OOR are only considered for Seattle

Just got the call! 🙂 ID applicant and couldn't be happier! Really surprised to hear back, I thought they said we'd find out later this week.

Congrats that's so great! Did you also receive an email or just the call?

Do any Idaho applicants know when we can expect waitlist/rejection emails?

Idaho first year here. I'm willing to answer any questions about the Idaho site, program, or really anything UW related. Side note to any Idaho alternates there was 8 accepted last year so don't panic if you are on the alternate list. Also UW loves reapplicants so if you interviewed and don't get accepted or get rejected post secondary don't lose hope. I was a reapplicant as well many other students in our class.

Just got rejected, congrats to everyone accepted and good luck to those waitlisted!

IS, SUC'd for Seattle a couple of times now -- has anyone done any digging on when we can expect to hear back once and for all?

Didn't get a waitlist. Any advice on reapplying? First year applicant with an average gpa and low to average mcat. About a year of CNA work in Meridian.

Anyone interviewed in Seattle heard back? I interviewed late on Jan 29, and haven't heard back. So anxious

Any current students dislike the rotations around the region 3rd/4th year? Seems pretty cool to me with the exception that friends/significant others won’t be seen as much. How bad does it affect friends and relationships?

I am also worried about this and am an OOR person coming from a very diverse area. I'm not sure how I feel about spending 3-6 months being a nomad in WWAMI land where it may not be exactly diverse and inclusive (as a LGBTQ+ POC who is not straight passing). Also being alone in such an isolated and rural area might be depressing. Clinical rotations grading is already subjective, and I don't want implicit biases to deter from my learning/grades because of who I am. Also noticed that the AOA at UW is disproportionately white. Just my two cents and would be interesting to have any available students chime in...

Send me a message and I will help you out more with specifics regarding your situation.
In general to those out there reapplying I’d recommend working a job in the medical field during the year off. I really think scribing can help us to see what physicians actually do and this should help in the interview the next time around. UW has a lot of clinical experience in the first year while it’s not really necessary to be a scribe or have years of clinical experience, but it would definitely be helpful.

Side note as step 1 will now be P/F for incoming students, going to a school with UW’s reputation and name will likely be more important in matching into competitive specialities.

I was thinking this through, and I’m worried it will actually be the opposite? Without knowing students’ step 1 scores, I imagine residency directors would (not unreasonably) associate us with our school’s historical step 1 average. With UW’s average being SO low compared to peer institutions, wouldn’t this disadvantage the student would have been capable of scoring 20-30 points higher than UW’s averages, making it harder to show how competitive their application is (/would have been if test was scored)? I am very interested in other viewpoints/thoughts - this is just a question that ran through my head as I was reading the announcement yesterday.

UWs average is 233 as of last year and is on par with Michigan, Pitt, UCLA. I also have thought about this Bc UW is highly ranked but it’s match list is not as strong comparatively to peers, but that’s due to the schools mission and student body I think. 75% PCP but I saw 3 derm matches to UCLA, Stanford, UW and 2 urology matches to MGH and Cleveland Clinic as examples of incredible matches

I don’t think so. They will probably just favor step two a little bit. The brightest students will often shine regardless of numbers. I don’t see residency directors retroactively disfavoring UW students as they are ranked very highly by residency directors.

On a different note, do you (or does anyone else) know if there is a disparity in residency director ranking or consideration between WWAMI students and UW Seattle students?

That’s good to hear! For some reason I had written down that their average was in the 220’s, so 233 is better

alaska WWAMI MS1 here. there is not a disparity in rankings for WWAMI versus seattle. the institution does a really good job of making sure that WWAMI students have the same opportunities and curriculum as seattle/spokane students.

in fact local admin likes to brag to us that WWAMI students do slightly better on the USMLE than seattle students. i don't know if that's actually true (and i suppose it doesn't matter now that step 1 is P/F) but i think it goes to show that there's not a meaningful difference in competitiveness between foundation sites.

UW's Step 1 is not low. 235 is the latest. UW's name carries a lot of weight. Those that want competitive specialties or residencies have a great chance at getting them. It's well known that UW students can match into competitive residencies with lower STEP 1 scores than MD students from other schools. I heard this from 4th years who matched into competitive specialties.

It's actually 235. They told us 233 months ago, but more scores came in and it's actually a couple points higher. Not sure about 75% PCP. If your including in internal med realize a lot of those individuals will specialize in cards, critical care, pulm, ID, gastro, etc. I looked at the Idaho match lists from years based and If I remember correctly there was 4-5 family med out of the 40 and more EM each year than family. There is some that choose UW because they want to practice FM but do not think we are a primary care school in the same way a DO schools are. Bottom line: UW has a lot of resources to help you match into whatever you want to. There is zero pressure to match into family. We have primary care doctors help us with cases, clinical skills, but they also bring in specialists all the time to teach lectures and physical exams skills and talk about their specialty.
