2019-2020 University of Washington

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted my MSTP secondary earlier today, and just received a very confusing email:

"Thank you for your application to the University of Washington School of Medicine. Our school has received your AMCAS application and acknowledge your interest in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) program.

To complete your application for the MD/PhD program, please visit the website http://www.mstp.washington.edu, click on Admissions, then click on the Preliminary MSTP Application. Applicants without the preliminary MSTP application will not be considered for admission.

MSTP applicants without legal state residence in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, or Idaho (WWAMI) are considered only for the concurrent MD/PhD program. Please be aware that your application is not considered for the MD only program."

I though I already completed my application? Did anyone else get this email? I am quite confused.

I also got this email. I guess we are complete?

Me too. I think this might be an email sent out to all applicants to the MSTP, informing them of the preliminary application since we never received that email.

I got this too, no longer applying to their program though (have not even opened the secondary on their website) so it probably doesn't mean much at all.

Why did you change your mind, if you don't mind me asking?

I have a low MCAT for U Washington (514) and kind of realized I had no shot so I replaced it with another MD/PhD program. I love the program and the research interests strongly align with my own but feel like I wouldn't have a shot.

Isn't UW's average MCAT like a 508 though?

For the MSTP secondary are the essays truly optional? Or does it look bad if you don't respond?

Just got a mission statement request for MD app - not a secondary
OOS
What is the word/character limit for the mission statement request? Is it still 250 words like the rest of the essays? Or does it not even have a limit?

Yeah just had to confirm address etc. Was super simple then got the secondary a few days later.

That's a relief. I had to dig up tons of documentation for WSU, and I was wondering if the same thing would happen with UW. Happy you're moving along in the process. Meanwhile, I'm over here tonight like

I received a mission statement too! Re-applicant here, is it bad to copy and paste what I wrote last year?

Confused: is the mission statement request just for OOR or is it an MSTP thing? The posts blended together...

Gotcha, so it is mission statement for OOR only then? I have not heard anything from UW this far (I live in Spokane)

Yeah the mission statement is only sent to OOR MD only applicants. Looking at last year, most OOR applicants got rejected pre-secondary after submitting this statement.

Hmm this is actually a bit of a dilemma. On one hand, it's really tough for any OOR applicant to get a secondary MD application. The fact that you did at all means you apparently met their mission very well. Part of me says don't mess with a good thing.

Is there a way you can reword last year's response while still keeping the lion's share of your "meeting the UWSOM mission" narrative? Maybe add what you've done in the past year to supplement your suitability for the mission? Maybe that's a better option

Me: *resigned myself weeks ago to the fact that UW won’t give me a secondary bc I’m out of state*

For the mission statement, are you just addressing how you fit into the two groups that they listed or should you also indicate what your personal mission in a medical education/career is?

I explained how I fit into the two groups and concluded with how that has influenced my career aspirations

hey so is it a very good sign, good sign, or meh, to receive a secondary from university of washington? I am having a hard time understanding that I actually got one honestly, so wanna make sure if this is something to feel great about or not,
I am Californian (So-Cal that too lmao, typical LA guy) so that's part of my reason I am shocked.
if you are OOS and got a secondary without having to submit a mission statement I'd say that's a pretty good sign!

For the autobiographical statement, when they say "personal comments" does that mean the personal statement or also any of the 15 activities listed on AMCAS?

Any other IS people that haven't yet received a secondary? I was verified 7/16.
Verified on 6/30, IS, and still haven’t gotten one. Looks like only a few people on this thread have received one. Wouldn’t worry too much about it; their website says every IS applicant above a 3.0 and 495 MCAT (something like that) will automatically receive one.

Great, thank you.

Did you receive a SECONDARY, or did you receive the mission statement request thingy?

This is funny to me... can't computers just do this automatically and more or less instantly?

Disregard. Not a secondary. Residncy confirmation. Despite a washington mailing address, washington parental address, washington high school, washington driver's licence, and washington undergraduate institution...

The Wyoming residency verification is worse... I had to give them every address I have EVER lived at, every place I have worked, filed taxes, all the cars I have ever owned and all of that information for my parents. It was crazy.
