Anyone have all portions of their app complete but the portal is still showing the app as incomplete?

Just checked mine, and yes, shows same thing. I'm pretty sure it shows all greens on Friday when I submitted...
Derp. So maybe just a new portal issue showing everyone as incomplete?

I haven't received that email they said they would send once everything was complete afaik. I got the one that says I submitted my app, but that's it

I am still showing as complete in the portal, but I also received a complete email a few days after submitting. Did you submit today?

Last week, on Friday.

If you mean Friday, 8/9, then give it another business day or two to update. I received my complete email on the third business day after submitting.

If you mean that you submitted Friday, 8/2, then I've got nothing for you, sorry!

Here’s my application story:

I must say, this residency verification packet is interesting. I have spent most an entire day putting it all together.

I am a bit surprised I have to verify residency, even though I’ve owned a home here for a decade, my home of record never changed, and been a WA resident since 2002. (Since birth in the mid eighties , but family moved for a few years before I could come back).

Why do I have to verify? Because I was gone on military orders within the last five years. Family stayed at my home of record for the duration of my orders as well.

Yup.

Oh, and in this packet, I have to get a notarized letter from my parents stating they will not claim me as a dependent. Uh... ok. Let’s look at this objectively:
-30+ years old (Can’t be claimed as a child, must be 24 or younger.)
-Make more than $4150 annually and not fully/partially disabled (Can’t be claimed as a qualifying family member.)

So I have to get a notarized letter from my parents stating that they won’t violate federal tax law? And supply my parent’s tax return info as well to prove they haven’t been violating federal tax law? At some point, logic and reason need to be applied.

And now, my application is going to be delayed however long their verification process takes.... because of military orders.

I totally get the frustration (I had to submit a packet too), but I think one thing to keep in mind is that UW runs on a very different timeline compared to most other medical schools.

1. If you're applying to the Seattle cohort, even the vast majority of students who eventually matriculate are banished to "SUC" purgatory until March, so it doesn't really have a significant impact on when exactly you interview leading up to that point. Sure, some are accepted in October, November, but they are few and far between.

2. If you're applying to the Spokane cohort, they only have two interview times, in Late November and in February. I think it's reasonable to say that if you submit your secondary as soon as your residency packet is approved, they'll review your app in time to consider you for the November cohort anyway.

Even if the verification time takes the entire 6 weeks for us (I don't think it will if you're one of the quicker ones to submit), I believe that would still put you in a reasonable timeline regardless of which cohort you're applying to.

Aside from National Guard or Reserve Component military duty, have you been outside Washington State in the last five years?” Or instead they could have a follow up question to their current one that says “Was this absence military?”
Same problem here my guy. Same problem here. I have the majority of the documentation ready to go...it is just a matter of putting it all together and sending it.

Also in this situation.

OOR, Secondary Received today and submitted. Was told by admissions office that only 1.1-1.3% of OOR applicants get a secondary so it's a brutal cut.

Disadvantaged with heavy service to the underserved.

OOR is not being from Washington, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Alaska.

Are your stats >75 LM and do you have a SIGNIFICANT commitment towards any community in the WWAMI region or rural and/or underserved populations?
My LM is 70, so not great. And I am definitely not committed to that region so I understand this soft rejection haha! By the way, how do you have 4.5 interview invites and where at?

Do you know how many OOR that they give secondaries eventually get an interview?

Probably a substantial proportion.

For E-2018, 108 II's went out for 7.6k OOR applicants. That's about 1.4%. So assuming the statistic @bearcalbear2019 quoted about 1.1-1.3% of OOR applicants receiving secondaries is correct (that seems insane), you can reason that the majority of them receive interview invites upon secondary submission.

Honestly, it blows my mind that UW still gets so many OOR applicants. Surely by now, most are fully aware of the abysmal acceptance rates for OOR students? None of the other regionally-preferential state schools get even close to this amount of OOS/OOR applicants. I know MSAR can be a bit misleading due to lumping the 4 other WWAMI states into "out-of-state," but you'd think most applicants would clue in after so long.

Congrats on the OOR secondary! When did you submit your mission statement?

Proof~

Completed mission statement 7/31
Whoah, that's crazy, thanks for sharing! Can someone check my math (I'm very febrile right now lol) but doesn't that mean for last season 100% of OOR students who received secondary also received a II?

Not sure, but I think a majority! Let's keep our fingers crossed. Honestly there's a lot of repititon with the secondary lol

I received the OOR Mission statement essay request from UW 7/31 and submitted 8/1. I still haven't heard anything back yet. Any insight on this? Thanks!

Just got a rejection email: pretty pleased that the University of Washington doesn’t just leave its applicants hanging. Not surprised at the rejection—I’m an OOS applicant (from Texas no less)—though I did have a heart attack and a half thinking I had gotten a pre-II reject from Washington University–St. Louis😱 . Good luck to everyone else who still has an active application!

I got an email that my application was under review but didn’t get a secondary invite.

Really? So the mission statement (pre-secondary) is invite only?

I would email them and ask why you didn't get a mission statement request.

It looks like that may be the case—at least for OOS applicants. Neither of the emails I received mentioned a mission statement. This is the email I just received:

“The Admissions Committee for the University of Washington School of Medicine has completed its preliminary review of your application. As an out-of-region candidate, you did not meet the criteria for further consideration to the MD program. . . . Due to the number of applications we receive, we are unable to offer individualized feedback on your application.”

I’m not too pressed about it though, U Washington was definitely a reach for me.

When I submitted my mission statement they sent me an confirmation email. In the email it stated, "You will be notified as soon as possible if you are requested to submit secondary application materials. This review can take 5-8 weeks. All secondary application materials are due in our office by December 1, 2019."

I'm struggling to think of what to write for the "let us know more about who you are in addition to being someone who wants to be a physician" question. Did you guys write about completely medically unrelated stuff (so being a sister/friend/daughter, hobbies that I have, etc.) or should I talk about something still professionally related? for example I also want to go into health administration so should I talk about that?

I went with pretty medically unrelated, but still showing qualities that would contribute to me being a good doctor. I felt like there were some aspects of my life/interests that I hadn't gotten to show in other parts of my app, so I focused on those. However, if you feel like its important to talk about going into health admin, and you haven't gotten to talk about it elsewhere, this might be a good spot.

I would say focus on who you are outside of medical stuff. Obviously keep the tone professional and you can relate qualities back to being a physician. They word it in a way that I think they are gearing towards not being medically related. Medical schools want to know who you are, what makes you different and special outside of medicine. Everyone applying is similar in that sense, so what makes you different. When you are practicing, you are gonna be doctor + what? Focus on hobbies or things that interest you! They also want to make sure you aren't going to be completely burnt out!

Wanted to let everyone know that I called admissions last week, and apparently the revised metric threshold for MCAT is a score of 495 this year. This means if you do not have this minimum score, you will be automatically screened out (and not receive a secondary). Good luck everyone!

Heard back from their Residence Classification Office a few days ago after submitting my Residency packet a few weeks ago. All I can say is they are MUCH more stringent than WSU's office was. Looks like I'll have to submit another round of paperwork which I'm not exactly thrilled about.

Oh geez. Did they email you?

Alright, folks. Residency verification packet finally finished and ready to be email. I figured if UW is going to make many of us go out of our way to prove something that is obvious, I will go all out.

If they are gonna be extra, I’mma be extra.

55 pages, a cover letter, labeled section partitions...this thing is gold. It took way more effort than needed. It was also pointless. Hope it helps them.

That is unreal. I wonder if interview invites will be going out late (in December) since they need to get all these poor residency verification folks processed.

They will likely have two major waves in mid September and then in October/November. One for the people who didn’t need the verification packet, one for those who did.

Also, this amount of work and documentation was likely not needed. My goal was to annoy the residency office enough with volume to get them to complain to UWSOM about lightening their requirements for the next cycle. Because this was rediculous.

Disregard the “volume” and “more than you need.” Apparently it is not uncommon for their office to receive much larger packets...

HA this will show the-

“Dear MemeLord,

We want to sincerely thank you for being so succinct in your residency packet information. We usually receive packets containing 200+ pages, so we are grateful to you for lightening the load in such a thoughtful way! 🙂

Do we know what proportion of IS students got the packet vs not?

I’m IS and didn’t receive a package, so n=1. Hard to say. My guess is (and this is only a guess) probably a minority. The majority of IS students are probably all lifelong residents who went to in-state undergrads. Your circumstances are definitely unique though, so that’s most likely why you got one.

Also lifelong IS. Went in state for undergrad, but out of state for grad school. Wondering if my fate will be the packet... already WWAMI certified through my home university though.

They just reached out to you to say that? I'm jealous. Mine was probably closer to 100 pages (30-40 pages of bank statements from different time periods just to be sure). I too went a little over the top, everything organized into sections, separated by dividers, and with tons of post-it's to make things easier for them.

I just did paystubs from the end of each year for 3 years as opposed to bank statements. That plus 5 years of Army W2s, rental contracts blah blah...you know the drill

Lol no, I was just poking fun at how hilariously and frustratingly meticulous UW is being with verifying residency. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that, and I’m so sorry for those of you that do. Just ridiculous.

Does anyone know how quick they were to send out secondaries/rejections for OOR in the past? I haven't heard anything and I'm getting anxious!

I am OOR, submitted my mission statement essay 7/31 and still have not heard back yet either about a secondary or rejection
