2019-2020 UT Medical Branch

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The last 2 years they did not. They did send out some OOS acceptance offers in December though.
I snagged one of those! It was a huge relief after I got stuck there during the storm without my luggage and had to run around in my flip flops in the rain trying to buy a set of dress clothes.

Congratulations! Just for going through your experience, you deserve an admission!

If I did not get an II by now do I need to worry about it?????

in general and utmb

I would worry. There is very few interview dates left. Texas schools wrap up before Jan 17, which is the last day for applicants to rank interviewed schools.

The only school I know for sure that’s interviewing up until January is McGovern I’m not sure what other schools still interview the late

UTSW as well I believe. The last date for UTMB is December and also for Long is Dec 13 maybe. The others I do not know.

Current students at UTMB: can you comment on whether taking Genetics before matriculation is helpful? UTMB says they highly suggest that the class is taken but I'm interested to hear from current students about your experiences. Did you take it or not, and if you know students who do well in MCT without taking Genetics beforehand?

you don't need it. If you want to take it do it. Of course you can do well without it. There's a lot of classes that are helpful but not necessary. I didn't take most of the "helpful" classes and I'm doing gr8 🙂 (like micro bio, anatomy, pharmacology, immunology, biochem 2, molecular genetics, pathophysiology, histology)

also we haven't went past general bio 1/2 level genetics in MCT

Thank you!! That’s helpful info and answers my questions about the other classes you listed.

Is prematriculation program required if you ever get the invitation?

I believe this program is no longer offered.
Up until last year there was a pre-matriculation program to help people maybe ramp up to the rigor of medical school.
Starting with the 2019 entering students, instead they had everyone start in July and take classes preparing you for professionalism, advocacy, use of school resources, knowing the system, and some other useful things. This module lasts about 5 weeks. I talked to some of the first students to do this module last year and they liked it and felt it was preferable to getting jumped straight in to Gross Anatomy lab the first week.

So my sister just had an interview there and interviewers seemed to like her answers so they kept moving on to next question. However, they seemed to be very indifferent. She told me that while they were okay with all answers without any further arguments or comments, interviewers seemed to not to like her.

Did you guys have the same experience or your interviewers were very enthusiastic and were eagle to persuade you to come to UTMB?

I think the general consensus is that it is difficult to predict acceptance based on how well the interview seemed to go. There are many anecdotes of people with horrible interview experiences that have gotten accepted and vice versa. Personally, one of my interviews went great and one of my interviewers seemed indifferent; and I have yet to hear anything back.

Thank you for the reply. I see that you have an acceptance from another medical school. Congrats on your med school acceptance.

So when did you interview UTMB?

I definitely had one stressful interview and one good interview. My first interviewer definitely looked and talked indifferent. I was stressing out so much during and after, but my second one was really chill. Both of my interviews lasted about 45 minutes though. Is that supposed to be good?

My friend who interviewed early on had way less than 30 min interviews, and apparently the interviewers were praising his ECs. He thought he did pretty well but hasn’t heard anything back yet.

Both of mines were about 20-25 minute. I thought the first stress interview completely ruined my chances but I was fortunate to get a prematch.

Ah ok that’s good to hear! And congratulations!! I couldn’t even go to bed that night because of how stressful the first interview was. Hopefully both my friend and I hear some good news soon 🙂

Thank you! I’m sure you will. Awhile back a current UTMB student said that not everyone that prematches goes to UTMB bc they’re used to big cities or others factors so that’ll open up seats to those who haven’t prematched. If you really want to go here rank it #1 and hopefully you will go there!

Both my interviews were extremely chill to the point that it's concerning me. I felt I wan't able to convey much about myself as an applicant since we weren't able to discuss anything substantial.... 🙁

Anyone have a similar experience?

yes me!!!! both of my interviews were super chill!!!

Thanks for this reply. Gave me some hope! I’ve pre-matched at other places but my family and I really think UTMB would be the best fit for us. Still no Pre-match offer, but crossing my fingers.

I believe sometime in Jan or Feb. Keep in mind a lot of people in your class haven't been accepted yet. (Match)

What’s the ratio of students who prematched to students who matched? I’m just trying to figure out my chances at this point.

I saw somewhere on SDN or Reddit that about 80% of students prematch and 20% match, but I’m not sure how credible that source was.

What does this mean? Does it mean they offer 80% of their seats through prematch, or does it mean that 80% of the final class is made up of people who prematched?

The way it was worded made it seem like 80% of the final class was accepted through a prematch. But again, I don’t know how credible the source was.

I would say it's more like 50/50. People end up going to other schools and giving up prematches. Most people I know didn't prematch but that's just personal experience.

Could people who had interviews in December be prematched?
It really would depend on when in December, I feel. It's been said that the December prematch wave will be out on 12/18/2019. Maybe the earliest of December IIs, but when the II date gets to be within a week of the 18th, I'd be skeptical.

@jarednogeek and other students, do you know when the Admissions office closes for the holiday season? I know folks are saying 12/18 for a pre match wave but I think that’s just based on last year and recognizing that the acceptances will be released before everything closes for the holidays.

So it looks like MS1s have exams this Friday so the med school is open til this Friday. Then vacation for 2 weeks and then come back on Jan 6th.
Last year, December 18th, 2018 was Tuesday so the UTMB may give prematch offers tomorrow Tuesday, December 17th, 2019. Good Luck everyone!

For the UTMB health insurance, does anyone know if you get it, does it get added to your tuition or you have to deduct it from your cost of living? And if you have to deduct it from your cost of living how much is it?

*frantically reloading the page to see if/when the next wave comes out*

Me! How am I supposed to focus on anything else today or tomorrow?
