So I am having some difficulty understanding the interview process. If we have already completed VITA, is the only thing left just attending one of the VAVD? And are there student or faculty interviews at these VAVD or are they simply Q/A and information sessions?

VITA is the only component of their interview. VAVD is a Virtual Applicant Visit Day where you'll learn about the curriculum, services, get to talk with students, etc

Oh wow, that's great news! Super low-stress then. Do you (or anyone else) know if there are estimates on their post-interview acceptance rate?

I've done a little bit of math and found that it is 42.6% for IS (across a 4-year average). Last week, I found an official spreadsheet (on their website) that had the number of applicants, interviews, acceptees, and matriculants for both IS and OOS across the past 4 cycles. I can't find it anymore though.

For OOS, I didn't run those numbers but I can estimate it for you based on the link below and MSAR. We know that 45% of the class of 2024 is OOS. We also know that they accepted 184 students. Given that roughly half of US MD matriculants only had one acceptance (per AAMC), it's fairly reasonable to assume that 45% of those who were accepted were OOS. That would mean that ~83 OOS applicants were accepted.

MSAR tells us that 188/5047 (3.72%) of OOS applicants were interviewed. Additionally, the Wayback Machine tells us that last year saw 299/5362 (5.57%) of OOS applicants get interviewed. Obviously, these two data points represent two different years, so I will average these percentages, but I will point out that the Wayback Machine has data from the 2019-2020 cycle, so the 2020-2021 cycle will likely be closer to 5.57% than the 3.72%.

Averaging these two data points, we can see that roughly 4.65% of OOS applicants get interviewed. Since we know that roughly 45% of the class is OOS, we can also divide to find the total number of OOS that get accepted, which comes out to 1.54% ((.45*184)/5362). Dividing the acceptance rate by the interview rate tells us the OOS, post-II acceptance rate, which comes out to 33% (1.54/4.65). We can check this against the wayback machine that says that, as of March 15, 2020, 83/299 (27.8%) OOS interviewees to the class of 2024 were accepted. This number slightly underestimates the acceptance rate because it is possible that some people were accepted off of a waitlist after March 15th and before matriculation.

UArizona COM-Phoenix has a post-II acceptance rate of around 43% for IS and 30% for OOS!

Wow, thank you for doing the math! This is great!

Edit: your conclusions also seem to be in-line with the post-II acceptance rate of U of A - Tucson that are found in the spreadsheet from @TheDataKing

Wow, political pollster in the making ? Or a CPA 😉. I lost you part way through but 30% OOS feels about right! Thanks.

II OOS, complete 8/10. I feel like VITA only gives me a negative impression of the school. Talking to someone personally gives a much better overview than talking at a screen or answering secondary questions. IDK maybe it's because I didn't feel great about my VITA, but doctors need to be able to communicate with real people and not just answer cliche questions.

No worries! Feel free to withdraw your app since you don't like the school!

JK... but in all seriousness, I love absolutely everything about this school except for the fact that they are solely using VITA this year. Normally they do an MMI in person, but they said that they thought VITA was the best way to standardize everything for this year's applicants. I really do think they're doing it out of standardization and not laziness.

Thanks for the response! Yea I kinda understand why they would do it, but still not enthusiastic about it haha. I will not be withdrawing much to your disappointment 😉

Dr. Fogerty also made a comment about how they helped develop VITA so they feel like it works well for their needs.

is the next round of decisions this Monday?
Calls are supposed to come out about every two weeks. The first one came 10/19, which would be four weeks before this coming monday, so YES! Although the next time after that is going to be afer 3 weeks on 12/7 (according to my VAVD). I'm assuming this delay is due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Just to get further clarify — will all of us who had our VAVD on 10/6 hear back on Monday with either an acceptance or deferral email? Did everyone from previous VAVDs hear back already with one of those two responses?

Lots of admissions offered have been to out of state (22) and less to instate (9). is this the same eveyr year that they offer first to out of state and then in state ?

I found some very interesting information based on the last four years of admissions (2016-2019). I don't know why, but they have since removed this from their website.

What is the point of the personalized portal that you get access to after VAVD? It doesn't really have any useful information or content that is specific to me. Do I need to do something with it? I can't find anything, so I don't understand why they don't just give this to us after getting accepted.

I just took the VITA and it was awful, I don’t even know how to feel. 🙁
That's okay! Several people who thought they did bad on VITA have already ended up with acceptances. Also, the admissions team said that they're giving less weight to interviews than normal years because it's only online. Everybody is going through the same thing, so I wouldn't stress it too much. Just be proud of how far you've advanced so far! A VITA invite is a good sign!!!

This might have been addressed in a previous page, but what is the attire for the mixer? Also I assume it is normal professional attire on the programming day?

Good luck to all the people who had VAVD on 10/06. You should be hearing back today! Turn your ringers on and let us know when you get an update!

Do you know if it's always a 6 week turnaround? Or will that start to speed up now that they're deeper into the interview season?

That's pretty standard for them to take 6 weeks. Many other schools take 8 to 12 weeks. Phoenix will give you a date at the end of your VAVD and tell you when you can expect your decision. Because of Thanksgiving, some of us have to wait 7 weeks. I don't think it'll get much shorter than that if at all.

Excellent! Thanks!

UArizona COM-Tucson calls from a hidden/private number, so make sure you answer ALL calls if you're expecting one today!

Were the 10/6 VAVD interviewees told that today was the day or was it just assumed?
It was assumed because the last VAVD (9/22) heard back two weeks ago. And those that were put on “hold” to hear back later I believe were told that today was the next day that they were notifying people. And therefore it was assumed that us 10/6ers would hear back today. I don’t believe they gave any date to us on 10/6. I could be wrong though.

It's weird that they didn't explicitly give you a date. They told the VAVD interviewees on 10/20 that we would hear back on 12/7. Nobody even asked for it. They just announced it.
