Both were top choices for me going into the season. I think my interview day itself helped me decide. OUWB seemed more organized and polished. I felt they put in more of an effort to demonstrate what is great about OUWB while emphasizing that ultimately everyone needs to find what will work well for them. I also found the people to be kinder, more welcoming, and more interested in me as a person. I took this as a reflection of the program. I am sure this could be harder to decipher during a virtual interview season but this was my own experience.

I also really value knowing my classmates and having that social connection. I felt from asking the students that this was fostered better at OUWB. OUWB has a smaller class size so it is easier to know all your classmates and OUWB makes an effort to organize numerous activities so that I knew all my classmates by the end of the first week. A large reason why the community seemed better at OUWB is because of the attendance requirement for honors (pre-COVID). This makes it possible for students to interact more regularly. This is something I would recommend everyone highly consider since it is possible this will return once COVID is under control. For me, it was a positive that at OUWB most students attended lectures regularly but obviously not everyone may like that.

Because I interviewed a few years ago, Wayne was undergoing a curriculum change but it was not going to take effect until the class after mine. I didn't personally like this as I saw it as the school recognizing that their curriculum needed improvement but that I would not benefit from that as it would not be rolled out for my class. I felt that meant I would therefore be receiving a less desirable curriculum. Obviously, this would no longer be a factor for you since they have changed their curriculum.

I am also not sure what the case is for Wayne regarding the hospital contract as I know that was a huge issue a year or two ago. I enjoy OUWB being affiliated with Beaumont and having an exclusive relationship with them.

When it came to money, Wayne State is significantly cheaper for in state applicants unless you receive a scholarship since OUWB is private. I personally feel that it was worth being in more debt to be happier where I was but that is a personal preference.

This is just my personal experience and in no means is to bad mouth Wayne because obviously they still put out great physicians and my perspective is only of a student enrolled at OUWB who can't compare what it's actually like to be enrolled at each.

Hi, I had this decision to make too. I wanted WSU at first mostly due to having lots of friends there and doing undergrad there. Ultimately I chose OUWB because I wanted a school that would support me through my education, since med school is tough even on the best days. Over the past 2 years I've been more and more happy about my decision. I have close friends at WSU med who have been poorly treated by the admin and have suffered as a result; whereas among my class at OUWB I can't think of any situation like that.

Unless you are dead-set on a specific specialty that Beaumont does not offer, or are interested in doing lots of research, then you will not lose out on anything by going to a smaller school like OUWB.

I agree with what the other commenter said as well. COVID aside, developing a strong class community is something OUWB takes seriously. Never having to worry about losing access to clinical rotations is great. The higher tuition sucks.
 
For accepted students, do we need to send grade updates to the school? Do you know if this can be done via the portal or do we email them directly? Thanks!

How long are the decision turn around times? 6-8 weeks?

The best way they should handle this is to give you an acceptance just to make you learn the school name. 🙂 . Wishing you the very best.
 
Hi everyone, I was wondering if other admitted students have gotten their financial aid packages yet? If so, if you could also let me know when you were admitted as well. Oakland is on the pricier side so I’m really hoping to hear about financial aid soon before having to make major decisions

I did talk to the financial aid officer there when they were confirming my FAFSA info and he said we may hear back, but we may not/likely may not get a financial aid package until March/April (which is aligned with a lot of schools since they'll know more about what their class looks like by then).

On another note, there's 89 people in the OUWB accepted FB page and pending on the 274 people in the class of 2024 page, there's a lot of IIs/A's for them to still get to people. Hoping to see some II/A movement here soon 🙂

The class is targeted at 125 people so based on the 2-2.5x acceptance/seat and 475 interviews with a 50% acceptance rate, they probably accept around 230-270 people which is aligned with the size of the FB group.
 
Any idea when December interviewees will hear back?

So if there are ~270 people pending on fb, wouldn’t that mean they are done with IIs (almost)? Sorry I didn’t quite understand Daikon’s statement before haha 😅

270 people on the 2024 page, the 2025 page only has 89 so it still has a bit to catch up I guess

Current student here. Please disregard the # of FB users in the class of 2025, 2024, 2023, etc pages! They are full of students from the classes above/below as well as administrators. That is no indication of how many students are accepted or interviewed.

Also if it makes anyone feel better, I received my invitation in late Feb/early March and was accepted within a few weeks of my interview. There's still plenty of time.
 
Has anyone received any merit scholarships since returning from the holidays?
 
Anyone know the Match rate for ouwb? It says 110 M4's matched from class of 2020. Is that out of the usual class of 125?
 
Does anyone know when OUWB historically begins making its financial aid award decisions?
