2020-2021 Pittsburgh

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is the pitt admissions site down? I am trying to log in for the curriculum session and it keeps saying the servers are down.

I'm not able to log into my portal either 🙁 I guess we have to reschedule.
I figured it out. It was some issue with my WiFi. I had to go in through my phone, and use my phones LTE network to log in to the site. I then downloaded the zoom app and was able to join 😂

Thanks man! I was able to make it in. Weird issue..

Now..... what does this mean????? Portal went down = A??????

I've been so on the fence about sending an LOI, particularly post-II pre-waitlist, and given the rather disparaging light in which sdn seems to cast them. Obviously some schools soft require them, but I'm not sure if the fact that a school accepts them means they have a lot of (or any) utility. It seems as though not withdrawing an application is message enough that you're still interested.

That said, I do see how at a non-rolling school, there may be some utility in expressing that after, presumably, other interviews and acceptances, you're still committed to attending that school upon acceptance. It's difficult to say.
I sent in an LOI a couple of months ago and I'm pretty sure the reason why I ended up doing it was that somewhere on their website it says they were receptive to pre-decision, post-II LOI/updates.

As much as I'd love a Pitt A without hesitation, I don't believe in forcing one's hand before the initial decision is revealed. Especially when I'm still waiting on three strong Ohio schools to either II or R me. Thus, I think updates are best pre-decision, followed by the LOI post-decision if waitlisted.

My reasoning stems from this: the adcoms compiled scores from VITA, interview, LORs, etc. and already know our approximate ranking/probable decision if we're not January interviewees. Thus, I'd find it hard to imagine that a non-binding LOI sent before the interview season is over would drastically move someone from Tier 1 WL to A or Tier 2 WL to Tier 1 WL.
Well sure but it's not going to move you from A to T1 WL or T1 WL to T2 WL. It can only help, especially if they're receptive as stated on their website "Our Admissions Committee welcomes letters of intent/interest and updates to your application. The most appropriate time to follow-up with us is following your interview or after the receipt of your official admissions decision. Communications can be sent via postal mail or to our admissions mailbox at [email protected]. Any communication received from the applicant will be included in their admissions file."

For those who sent updates, did admissions ever respond to your email?

Has anyone received PSTP interview invites recently? If so, would you mind sharing when you got your invite?

Has anyone received a response email after sending an update? I emailed a post-II update last week but never received a confirmation email.

I'm not actually sure what hand you are forcing by sending an LOI pre-decision. I just don't believe that the usefulness/impact of an LOI grows over time/post-decision. Its probably the reverse actually - it decreases over time and especially post-decision. I know that there seems to be a SDN conventional wisdom that doubts whether LOIs make any dent at all. I don't really buy it. I wished I had been a lot more straightforward during my application cycle (2019-20) and stopped trying to be strategic with when I sent updates/LOIs, even more so after starting medical school and becoming more familiar with the admissions process. Leave the strategizing to the admissions committee, which, at Pitt, has a strict class size range of around 140-150 incoming students to work with and an annual matriculation rate of ~40-45% from the accepted applicant pool. Showing intent makes their job so much easier if you are an applicant they consider highly, so send those LOIs as soon as possible post-II. And if you aren't an applicant that is "ranked" highly post-II, sending vs not sending an LOI probably doesn't make a diff anyways.

I'm honestly really torn on sending a post-II LOI here. I interviewed in September and absolutely loved it; I feel I am a great fit and would be thrilled to attend UPSOM. But at the same time, there are also 2 other schools I interviewed at that I would also consider highly and I am still awaiting post-II decisions from there as well. I don't feel it would be fair for me to state my commitment to attend Pitt if accepted, but is it appropriate/helpful to write them on how they are in my top 3 schools and elaborate upon my interest and fit? I'd appreciate any advice 🙂

I don't think there's much to lose. You can absolutely express interest without expressing intent!

Only send a letter of intent if you intend to matriculate given an acceptance. If Pitt isn't your unequivocal top choice, do not send a LOI. I think I might actually agree with the SDN consensus on letters of interest. I can't imagine they mean much, especially if you literally claim a school is among your top 3, which probably does more harm than anything I would imagine. If you interviewed and haven't withdrawn your application from consideration, your continued interest is basically strongly implied. Everyone's interested in every medical school they interviewed at up until an acceptance to their top choice. That's why intent stands out. I'd honestly only send Pitt an update (which substantiates your continued interest) if you really feel the need to send something. Don't send them a letter of interest telling them they rank in your personal top 3. And def don't send a letter of intent.

this might have been answered but how long after you interviewed did you hear back about a decision? i just had my interview and they didn't really say.

IIRC decisions are coming out Feb 19 but there's historical evidence indicating they sometimes release decisions a bit earlier

February 19th at the latest. 2-3 days before that at the earliest.

I've been hearing this a lot on here (that Pitt sometimes releases decisions early), but I don't remember seeing any early decisions on past years' threads (I may very well have just missed it though).

By "historical evidence," do you mean within the past 4 years? Or was this practice of sending decisions early something that happened a long while ago?

2019 - 2020: January 29th

2014 - 2015: January 29th
2013 - 2014: January 31th
Well damn.

ETA: Isn't the decision day later this year, though? I remember it being the end of January in years past.

Ohhh I didn't realize January 29th was early last year; I thought that was the date everyone expected decisions to be released LOL.

I would say an update letter yes, in particular if you have a publication or presentation. I would not send a letter of interest or intent until after the first round of decisions. And then I would suggesting sending monthly letters, and it doesn't have to be solely an update about yourself, it could be a combination of things you've done and aspects of Pitt that you like. Also, if you have a connection to Pitt, like a family member went there or is currently working there, or you've done research with a faculty member and you haven't mentioned it in you initial application, include that. Pitt loves Pitt.
Do you mind expanding on the "Pitt loves Pitt"? I have heard this before, and I am wondering why Pitt has this reputation. Do applicants with some pitt connection tend to do very well? Thank you in advance!

Have you heard anything as to whether or not classes will be held on campus this upcoming semester? When would Pitt need to make that decision? Thank you.
I don't believe anything explicit has been said. But my hunch, however much that is worth, would be resumption of in-person classes/activities/rotations for MS1-4s. And that's honestly going off how I feel the vaccine rollout is going nationally, which has actually ramped up quite a bit this month after a bumpy start - roughly 1.3-1.5 million doses are being administered every day and that number should very easily reach 2-3 million daily by the end of February. The expected EUA of the JNJ and Novovax vaccines in the coming month will help a ton as well. By mid-August, an enormous portion of the adult population should be vaccinated and most certainly all UPMC employees/Pitt Med students. I really, really doubt that they will have to resort to another semester of virtual medical school.

out of curiosity does anyone else know their last interview date?
at recent info sesh they said it was supposed to be end of jan but got extended to feb 2 or 3 (can't recall). also said decisions will come out 2/19 as planned

so i have been waiting to hear back for a while, and i just checked my portal to see that I was rejected? but I just looked through my email and I never got any correspondence from them, so I really have no clue when I was rejected. oh well

Is this for MSTP or PSTP? Because I don't believe regular decisions have been released yet.

NVM I just realized you probably mean pre-II. Portal-only notifications suck.

Nope, but my update was added to my file!
how long did it take for them to update your file? I sent an update back in october that took a day for it to upload. I sent another update a week ago, and I'm sure it's busier than in october, but this is taking a lot longer than last time.

Not OP. But I sent in my grades on a workday, it was uploaded same day. Sent in a LOI over the weekend, was uploaded that Monday.
hmmm interesting. I was thinking that maybe it was later this time since closer to the end of season, but maybe I will send them a follow up email on monday. Thanks for your input!

If any current students/alumni could answer: What term do you guys (and faculty) usually use when talking about this med school? (I know "UPitt" usually induces cringe among current students lol)

Pitt? PittMed? UPSOM?

does anyone know how many students who went to pitt as undergrads are actually in each med school class? I didnt go to Pitt but I noticed a lot of Pitt students in the information sessions so I was wondering if there is any bias.

I don’t think so...I was the only pitt undergrad on my interview day as well as in my info session. (So you probably had a sample bias??) And our premed advisor told me Pittmed doesn’t give advantage to us. It’s a highly competitive and top 20 school after all...

There are a lot of premed at pitt and many of them do want to stay at pitt. It’s like if you went to college in NYC you probably want to stay in NYC for med school.

I'm not a current student, but know several people who are! Pitt and Pitt Med seems to be the consensus.

Hey guys for anyone who has already sent a letter of intent, did y'all just email it to admissions or the dean? Pitt has been my top choice since the beginning of the process so I don't see a point in waiting any longer.

I sent an update and not a LOI, but all correspondence goes through admissions, per their website!

Anyone has an idea when Pitt is going to release the As?
