2020-2021 Rochester

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would argue that there is a difference between wanting to be treated with respect and improving conditions for oneself and just complaining. I think it is instilled in us from a very early point in our careers that are disposable and can be mistreated and should just acquiesce to the status quo. That sort of mentality is what allowed for the kind of mistreatment of residents that is explored in Sam Shem's House of God. I'm really not complaining just to complain. I genuinely think that adcoms should not be allowed to get away with this kind of uncertain timeline. It's a basic respect thing.

While I'm all for advocating for social justice and equity, your frustration is based on not getting a response on 10/15 (in an application cycle that extends to next summer). To me, your previous response reeks a little bit of entitlement. No medical school owes anyone an immediate response. I am sure they are working as hard as they can to get responses to applicants in an efficient manner.

You can't control the behaviors of others, but you can choose how to respond. If you truly feel like Rochester is disrespecting you, then you have the option of withdrawing and going to another institution that doesn't make you feel that way.

Nothing to do with social justice or equity. More of a "taking care of your workforce" concept (equitably, I suppose, but not really the core idea here). I think 3+ weeks is a very reasonable turnaround time. I am not asking for an immediate response at all. I am asking for a timely response to an application I initially submitted in July. No other grad program would wait that long after interviews to respond. Yes, med school gets a lot of traffic, but med school admissions have more staff/interviewers. The interview feedback will be available within days of the interview and I am not sure how much new information comes up after that time?

I also feel that it would be entitled of me to feel I am owed an acceptance. I am certainly not saying that is the case. Rochester has every right to WL or reject me and I would be sad, but would take that in stride. I respect any admissions decision. I simply ask for a timely (3 week) resolution.

I don't see myself as some great revolutionary preaching some gospel for the downtrodden premeds or something. I just feel like we should be valued a bit more as humans and our time should be respected. This is not an issue unique to Rochester. It's a general med school thing.

Finally, the concept of, "you can leave if you don't like it here" is kind of antithetical to advocating for change in something you dislike, isn't it? I have no issue with someone disagreeing with me and saying that 6-8 weeks is very reasonable. Maybe I am not accounting for some very important admissions hurdles or something. I do, however, reserve the right to say that I disagree with the current state of affairs without having to leave. Perhaps I should have done so in a more respectful and less whiny manner though. Did not mean it that way. Keep in mind that tone is lost in text.

Your feelings are valid and you definitely have the right to disagree and voice your opinion. I feel similarly anxious about hearing back from schools and wished they would respond sooner. The part that I don't agree with, however, is the part where you said that delays in the process are "disrespectful," but perhaps there's a difference in how we define respect. It's inconvenient and frustrating, but saying that med schools are being disrespectful is a little extreme to me. As someone who used to work in recruiting and juggled high volumes of scheduling requests, I am familiar with how it feels being on the other side so I have a little more compassion for the people who are working behind the scenes trying to deliver the best care/service that they can.

You're right, tone doesn't communicate well via text and most likely contributed to our different opinions. I do hear what you are saying though. Hopefully med schools will take your feedback into account moving forward.

Random question: Got a cute little packet in the mail today from Rochester Med with like a bottle opener, some stickers, info, and confetti. I just interviewed on Thursday so I'm assuming it's likely too early for this to be an indicator either way - anyone else get this too?

I got it! Shortly after my interview. That was weeks ago. Still no A. It's not really an indicator. Sorry :/

They send it to all interviewees right after the interview. Nice touch, but not indicative of acceptance.

I actually thought I got rejected when I saw that email because they said we will hear a decision by January ._.

Have they pre-interview WL or R'ed anyone yet? Or do they batch reject in January?

Edit: basically do they make any decisions during the process? Or are they like Emory who says they will not reject anyone (even if you have no chance at all) until near the end of the cycle?

Got the reminder email as well (3.65/522, complete 9/5). Hopefully doesn't mean much, looks like everyone who got it was complete at around the same time (early September) and they're still just getting through them

I was complete 7/22 and this was the first I've heard back from this school lol

It seems like many of us were complete early September and they haven’t gotten to us?
I got the email too and got the complete email 8/4 soooo....

I'm not hopeful for myself, but I wish the best of luck for everyone else!

Just got the email, thought it was a BU situation but seems like everyone got it lolol

Was complete late July and also received the email!

But the same email?

It's similar

Just put on hold.

Received an e-mail stating "Application Still Under Review: We appreciate your interest in the University of Rochester Medical School and wanted to let you know review of applications is still ongoing. We have not forgotten you! Your application has been placed on hold and a decision regarding an interview will be made by the beginning of January. "

I was actually expecting a quick R from Rochester due to the lack of a secondary question allowing me to elucidate certain parts of my app so I'm feeling good about the hold. I was planning to visit a friend up in Rochester in February so maybe it's all just meant to be haha.

Was complete 10/30.

Good luck to everyone out there! <3

I think so. A friend submitted her secondary late on 10/13 and received the email. I now think they sent it to the applicants who they have not reviewed yet? Although the cynic in me is still very dubious.
