Yes, they release it automatically after a week. You have to sign and okay the report for release beforehand.

I feel like PTE being a tool to help schools figure out waitlist may not be in the students benefit so out of extra caution, I would hesitate to use it.

Plus Downstate wouldn’t be able to see who has selected PTE according to AAMC guidelines.
 
Did other NYS residents get the NYS student aid e-mail? The tuition assistance program (TAP)? I have tried to go to the site to start the application but it never fully loads.

i feel the same about November interviews, i think there was like 2-3 only... just very anxious

i would love to emphasize i DIDNT update them LOL, i said it has been 15 weeks since my interview, i would love to go to the school and want to know about decisions.....

1) Replied to the offer response page on the school admissions portal
2) Paid the $100 deposit
3) Sent an email saying I accept their offer
4) Sent in the criminal background check

I also would do fafsa ASAP. I called and they said try to be in their system before March 15 if u want priority aid or something but idt it’s a hard deadline. Outside of that you’re good

I’m kind of confused about this. Do people waiting to hear back from schools still do fafsa - even if an A is unclear at this point?

Did they say when the financial aid awards will be sent out?

Wow literally 10 minutes after I posted this, Downstate emailed me my finaid (doesn't seem to have been uploaded yet).

to be "in their system" does that mean to just have your FAFSA processed and they be one of the schools you added on your list?

I’ve done my fafsa for every school that I interviewed at. It’ll just save time later if it does become an A. They do only allow 10 so if you’re at 11+ interviews, then be more selective

Ya I’m p sure. I added them. Even if u didn’t u can go back and add it takes a day to process

Ya lmao I just saw that. The lady said “try to be in our pipeline, we don’t look at this stuff before 3/15 anyways and covid slowed everything down”
 
I see the total cost of attendance as like 77k. They added 25ish for living expenses and other stuff but I assume that 25 we can choose to take from the loan money or not. But u guys should be able to see that if u got the email

This is for all 4 years? I remember seeing something like 40K a semester on the website

Its around $44k a year or $22k a semester for tuition.

I'm not sure how Downstate says the mean debt for the Class of 2018 is $175,000. That's only covering tuition for 4 years, how do people pay for food/rent? I got offered up to $78k in loans, no grants (doesn't seem like DS gives out scholarships). That'll be $312k if I borrow at maximum all 4 years.

As a side note for future students, since interest rates are extremely low right now, I would max out your Federal Unsubsidized Loans @ 4.3%. Grad Plus loans are still a bit iffy because the 4.228% origination fee effectively makes the APR around 5.8%, which is pretty high.

For food and rent...either more loans, parents, or they have savings.

I took 2 years off before med school working full time and I barely saved up 20k after paying off my undergrad loans. Feelsbad 😢

I highly doubt it. I’ve accepted the fact that I’ll be broke and will be 300k in debt. Oh well

When you’re looking at these “average” debt after graduation statistics keep in mind that there are many med students that have the parents paying for their entire tuition, not just their living expenses.

Many students have at least one doctor parent. I believe the statistic was that 40% of matriculants come from household where the income was $200k or greater.

That makes more sense, although AAMC reports the median debt to also be around $200,000. Sigh, time to go back to living on ramen and beans lol
 
Any MD/PhD applicants have information on decision dates? The director told me via email that it will be no earlier than mid-March which is awfully vague and really not helpful in any way. The site says late February, but clearly that time has passed.
 
i think i may have missed the deadline for the AAMC Vita interview? do you think admissions will let me take it still?

I probably wouldn't bring it up personally. I don't think they even looked at VITA. Someone else earlier said they got in without taking it, and IIRC, the email only "strongly suggests" you take it. It's probably only being used for research purposes and not admissions.
