2020-2021 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats, there is still hope for you!!!! Was this for MD only of MD- PhD?
Oh good question, I think it was for both? Neither the email nor the portal update mentioned MD-PhD at all, but I didn't apply MD only. This is what my portal says:

And I just saw the stuff above, yeah I assume alternate list and waitlist are the same/I use the terms interchangeably! And I didn't send anything post-interview, just an update pre-II back in December.

Dang, I interviewed 03/24, interviewed for a waitlist spot lol

The acceptance wave earlier this year was so small though? Does this mean they handed out the maximum acceptances already? Like did all the people who interviewed in March interview for a WL spot?

So based on the image posted above their class is full? So everyone who hasn’t heard is expected to get a WL or R? Or am I misunderstanding

This exact thing happened last year around this time, or earlier — someone got a WL email with boilerplate language saying the class was full — and it turned out the class was not full. Numerous As were released in early May (as well as a few towards the end of April). Take a look at last year's thread. For whatever reason, Downstate's process involves holding back a portion of decisions until after the April 30th plan-to-enroll date.

I find this annoying and inconsiderate, but at least I'm sitting on two acceptances. I really feel for the folks with no As who are having to push through reapplying all while waiting on Downstate.

EDIT: Just to clarify, many of the As released last year in early May were new As, not WL spots converted to As.

2nd EDIT: Just reviewed last year's thread again — phew, it was trip! In the first week of May, there were a bunch of new As and WLs, and then a lot of WL->A conversions in the second week of May, including people who were accepted only a few days after being waitlisted. So sit tight!

I think it's also worth mentioning that there's probably a group of students (who knows how many) from last year's cycle that deferred admission for one year because of the covid pandemic and them not wanting to start their medical school experience via remote learning

If we have to have our schools narrowed to 3 by the 15th can we expect to hear back decisions by then ?

If they're saying it's full...then it's full. But that's not supposed to be a scary thing. Medical schools give out more A's than the number of seats in their class to account for withdrawals. AAMC guidelines do recommend for school to have sent in enough A's so that the class is full by a certain date (said date has already passed I believe). They hold back a portion of the decisions because by the April 30th, applicants will be required to drop Downstate or PTE at Downstate. On April 30th, Downstate can see what their incoming class ratios are looking like and now they know how many more applicants they need to accept or maybe pull from the waitlist. That's why you start seeing acceptances again in May. There will be a lot of traffic in May, similar to most other medical schools.

why not just put everyone that's been waiting since the fall on the alternate list then. Don't see why its advantageous to keep silent. Everyone that wasn't in the first wave of acceptances is on, in effect, that kind of list.

Especially since they don't report WL stats to AAMC. I can't think of any benefit to any party. I don't think a ton of people will withdraw if they get a WL instead of being ghosted.

So on Downstate's MSAR page it says "Students are ranked for residency application" but on Downstate's website it says "There is no internal ranking for Foundations of Medicine," which is what they call the preclinical years. Does that mean students are ranked based solely on grades from clerkships?
Current SUNY Downstate MS4. That is correct.

During info session they kept telling us to send LOIs right away. Does anyone know if these are an unspoken requirement at this school?
Just curious did you find out anything? I'm not sure if I should send a letter of intent if I'm not waitlisted.

Guys I'm freaking out. The exit interview email said that a student will contact me within 5 days and if I don't respond, my app will be automatically withdrawn. I haven't heard from anyone and it's been 5 days. I also don't have a spam blocker. The only thing I can think of doing is contacting admissions tomorrow but is my app withdrawn do u think? They would have emailed if it was tho right? 😭

Just email them and let them know you haven't received an email from a student yet. I think previous people have had issues with students contacting them 1-2 weeks later in this forum

This happened to me. I emailed them twice because I was freaking out, but they kept saying that someone would contact me and to be patient. It took 2 weeks to have my peer to peer conversation. you're chilling

Does any know the due date to pay tuition? And how does one even go about doing that? Haven't really heard much from the school since receiving the A

Only reported decision I've seen in the past few months was the single waitlist further up on this page (for a 2/22 interviewee). But based on last year's thread, we might be able to expect a wave of decisions this week.
was last year's wave around this time Rs?? or As/WLs?

Yeah I have no idea. the lack of communication is frustrating. When is the commit to enroll deadline also?

Does anyone know how loans work if you get off the waitlist for another school? If you accept the loans would you able to return or not use them if you decide to go elsewhere?

Not sure about downstate but im accepted somewhere else. They said if you are on a waitlist at a different school and end up getting in, just call the financial aid office at the school you are accepted at and ask them to cancel your requested loans. Within a few days, the loans are released and you are eligible to apply for loans at the school you will go to.

I was accepted back in February but I’m a little confused as to what we have to do to secure our spot. I emailed Downstate and this is all they said:
“Thank you for your email update. Once we run our internal report on deposits received we will mark that as complete. As for the commit to enroll button that will become available on April 30th.”
Besides the email we had to send admissions to accept, clicking accept, and sending in our deposit. What else do we have to do? Thanks!

I have emailed them for status update (interviewed 2/9). I'll keep y'all updated on their response.

"Thank you for your email and continued interest in SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. A decision to change the status of your application has not yet been reached. You will be notified in writing via email once a decision is rendered on your application."

Lol ok thanks, so helpful.

but dont you guys have an honors deans letter if you get 90+ in every unit? doesnt this count as internal ranking in a way?

also, realistically, doesnt the student interview really mean anything compared to faculty interview? can u give a ratio like 50/50 or 90/10?

unrelated, but if the cutoff for having an honors dean letter is getting 90+ in every unit that seems very fair lol. You have to have a way to reward someone that put that amount of work in.

their time line is so annoying. how are we supposed to move forward with our cycle if they drag out the process by this much? i feel so hesitant securing housing at my other school because I'm still waiting on downstate.

I 1000% percent agree. If applicants are expected to meet deadlines, medical schools should have concrete deadlines for releasing decisions as well. I'm over here waiting for 3 decisions from interviews between Jan-Feb. Now Downstate is going to add stress as well since they take their sweet time 🙄

Does anyone know approximately how many days/week we will be required to be at Downstate physically? I'm trying to decide whether to commute or get housing nearby.
