2020-2021 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A few questions here.

Is there an accepted students FB group or groupme?

also, I completed/released the Certiphi background check for another school in January. My pre-matric checklist does not reflect that the background check is completed. Is there something I need to do? Or do I just have to wait for them to update my portal?

when is FASFA due? I know March 1 was the date for priority aid but is there a final deadline it needs to be submitted by? I reached out to the financial aid office but they have not responded yet.

Hope this might ease off some pain for those who are still waiting

any early march interviews heard back yet - i think my interviewer said six weeks at least but that seems v close to the april 30 cutoff

just got an II. totally shocked. LM 70, OOS, complete 8/13. Did not send in updates, but did send an extra LOR ~mid-Feb. Dates available next week and third week of April!

edit: is this a waitlist spot? can't tell from the timeline/deadlines SUNY posted in the below link

So on Downstate's MSAR page it says "Students are ranked for residency application" but on Downstate's website it says "There is no internal ranking for Foundations of Medicine," which is what they call the preclinical years. Does that mean students are ranked based solely on grades from clerkships?

Those of us who interviewed like way long ago and still haven’t heard. Probably on an unofficial waitlist until others decline because downstate doesn’t have the integrity to just let us know where we stand after 6+ months.
Yeah not sure what the benefit of this is. Seems like in previous years, they had a big WL wave in mid April. Why not just announce the WL decisions as they come in? Kind of unprofessional imo.

Oh yes, count me in. October interviewee here. Consider myself waitlisted at this point.

From my understanding, Downstate hasn't given out many acceptances at all at this point, right? I figured that they've just converted to a sort of non-rolling admissions process and will be building their class this month.

I was invited in December for my interview in February and didn't see many (if any) acceptances before or after my date, but have seen a good amount of invitations since then.
According to AMCAS, medical schools need to send out enough acceptances to fill their class by March 15. So, this means they’ve sent out at least 200 by now. A lot of applicants aren’t on SDN or they just read and don’t post.

I believe those are just guidelines. Especially this year.

Im sorry if this is annoying but I just need to vent. Why on earth havent they sent out decisions for those who have interviewed 3+ months ago?? (almost 6 in my case) If I'm on the WL that's fine I just wish they'd say SOMETHING. I havent received an email from them since November.

They don't need us, we need them lol What I really despise is that they give time frames!?!?! why!?? They should just say we will contact you when we are ready instead of saying 2-4 weeks and never meeting that time frame.

at the very least a "hey we didnt forget about you 🙂" would be appreciated lol

I interviewed late but they told us “within 60 days.” I mean that’s like June I would HOPE so?!?!

it sounds like on here that Downstate hasn't sent out acceptances but someone has told me that they got accepted back in February but meanwhile my other friend interviewed in December and hasn't heard back. I know SDN isn't indicative of the whole applicants but there is at least a good correlation--so if a LARGE amount of us haven't heard back then we can extrapolate that a lot of people who aren't active on here haven't heard back as well. Just roar want to hear back!

I know of people that got accepted back in like December/January. I wish they would give us a little more insight

Hate to be a downer, but there were about 30 A’s on this thread for the “first wave”. That’s consistent with last year cycle too. And according to last year’s thread, the second wave of mass decisions was actually a post II R wave which happened April 15th

Yes and then more waves of As in May if I remember correctly ....

During info session they kept telling us to send LOIs right away. Does anyone know if these are an unspoken requirement at this school?

Got an email saying an admission decision was added to my portal - alternate list! Interviewed 2/22, stats in signature. They gave me 5 days to respond yes/no to staying on their WL. Does anyone have info on WL movement here?
did you receive this email just now? Also, did you happen to send a LOI/updates post-II?

Congrats, there is still hope for you!!!! Was this for MD only of MD- PhD?

Just curious is the alternate list what they call the WL or something else entirely?
yea for downstate i feel like people use waitlist/WL and alternate list/AL interchangeably from my experience. but downstate itself calls it AL
