2020-2021 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
is the general premise that LOIs can only help you? i'm debating sending one too but am worried they'll find it annoying :/ am i just overthinking?
My understanding is that schools love people that love them. I can’t imagine it would hurt!

just had my interview, lasted about 90 mins and was super super laid back!! when should we expect to hear from the student interviewer?

Does anyone know what the dress code is for the "Virtual Chat" after your interview? Also, any insight as to whether this is mostly passive or whether we should expect to be involved during the session? Thank you!

Business casual is fine in my opinion. Going gull formal with suit and button is never going to be a bad thing either. Also, it's what you make of it. You could stay quiet or you can be curious and ask questions. My group was very eager to speak with students and ask questions.

Does anyone know how formal the interview the the student is? Is it more for us to speak with a student and learn about the school or is it an actual formal interview?

It's both. They will have some questions that they're supposed to ask you, but they should also leave plenty of time for your questions. My student interviewer was happy to talk about their own experiences at Downstate.

January interview waiting to hear back

Any day now...

Does anyone know if it is worth mentioning you have another acceptance to admissions in a letter of update/LOI ? I dont know if it is appropriate to harness other acceptances or if it will come across poorly

I would say no. Just say it's your top choice program for whatever reason.

Part of me thinks that if they know you have another acceptance they'll be more inclined to offer the spot to someone else. At least that's my derivation from trying to understand why they're taking so long to send decisions. Waiting for April 15th to 30th movement.

so is just the majority of the class not filled and they're waiting until april to fill the class or am I mistaken

For the student interview, the student wants to do it over phone call. Did you guys give them your number or did they already have it?

I have a large non-refundable deposit to put down for another school by March 30th. I interviewed here on Dec 1st and have not gotten a decision yet and would love to go here if accepted. Would you guys advice reaching out to the admissions office and explaining my situation? Has anybody been successful with this in the past? Any info/advice would be much appreciated.

I bet they’ll just say a decision has not yet been made on your application. That’s what they told me.

If downstate was following the traffic rule recommendations, then they would have sent out 200 acceptances by March 15th. Who knows if schools are really following closely this year though.

did mine on the last day too and was in the first A wave, so it definitely won't hurt you 🙂
I did mine on the last day as well, although I forget whether it was supposed to be two weeks from the II date or the VITA email date. I think I did the first one to be safe. My only windows to do it before then didn't leave me much time to prepare, so I just had to keep delaying. I don't think it should matter at all tbh.
Thanks for sharing folks!! And congrats to you applicant20!

My interviewer didn’t seem to know for sure, but he told me 4-6 weeks
On their site it says “Applicants who are interviewed between mid-January 2021 - April 2021 should expect a decision later Spring” whenever that is. Also reading previous posts, they haven’t sent out all decisions for December yet :/

wow! this is BS! I need to know 🙁 The student I spoke to for my peer convo said that if we do not hear anything back in 6 weeks, then we can email them for an update. I'll probably do that next week

I heard some people from September emailed them and they just replied with a generic answer.
Also wondering about this. Did you ever find an answer?
Nah I got mixed answers.

i just got accepted into a 4 week internship that starts this weekend, y'all think sending this as an update would be beneficial since it's been 4.5 months 🙁 how would I go about telling them?

Did anyone else do their VITA exactly 2 weeks from the invitation date? Feeling a little guilty about it but I’m still within the time right?
I did as well. Honestly don’t think it matters. Wouldn’t worry about it.

Anyone know if they take updates and LOI's post interview? If they do should I just upload them to the portal or should I also email the admissions office to let them know I submitted an update to the portal. Any advice would be appreciated from anyone who's submitted something similar!

Hey guys, did you email your interviewer directly or did you upload the thank you letter to the portal?

Hm I only uploaded, didn't email.

I also had 5 interviews because this was for MD/PhD, so I figured this way the admissions office has a record of my thank yous but I could also send them directly to my interviewers just because I prefer the more personal interaction to remind them of highlights in our conversation.
