2020-2021 Texas Tech, Lubbock

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I doubt it. If they said it doesn't mean anything, it really probably doesn't. Did you interview recently? It's possible that they just haven't added you into the system yet.

Also, did anyone else NOT get the email?
Yeah I interviewed on 1/8 & I didn’t get the email (possibly because my interview was pretty recent)

Quick question: I'm set to interview at TTUHSC EP on 2/18, right before match preferences are due in TMDSAS. Are the match preferences for adcoms also due on 2/19, or do they get more time lol? I'm considering sending a letter of intent here as I absolutely LOVE this school but don't know if I'll have enough time to after my interview at TTUHSC EP.

Schools have more time to put together their rank lists of the hundreds of people they interviewed, but I don't know exactly when their deadline is.

Schools do NOT have access to the TMDSAS rank lists of applicants.
You are free to just rank them #1.

I would also ask them on your interview day to be sure that they will update you so that they will show up on your list of schools to rank!

I called admissions and asked about the emails and prematch.
They said that the emails were sent out to folks who have interviewed (however, people on this forum say otherwise) and it's just a way to prepare students or keep them ready about those important vaccines and the account sign up.
These emails do not mean ANYTHING!

Regarding pre-matches they said that they will be sending them out but they have to go through with today's interview session since it is the last one. I do not know when they intend to send the prematches but obviously, within the next 3 days, we should know.
Do you think theres time for them to still offer a prematch? Has any TMDSAS school every sent an acceptance/interview on a weekend?

The final day for prematch offers is today. Be sure to enter your rank order before Feb 19th. 🙂

Maybe they will still send out prematches in February due to COVID. Maybe someone can ask Lubbock.
Afraid not - the prematch window was already extended from Dec 31 to Jan 31 due to COVID-19 pandemic delaying our cycle.

So, the next acceptance news will be on Match Day on March 5th.
Use the waiting time to read all you can about your possible schools, and log in to TMDSAS to make your Match ranking decisions by Feb 19th.

As an OOS do you have the option/ability to make match ranking decisions?

Does anyone that interviewed on 01/29/2021 see where on the TMDSAS portal we rank the schools? Apparently it’s supposed to be on the sidebar but I don’t see anything yet - maybe I just need to wait a little longer but I want to make sure that I get it in time before the match preference deadline.

Has anyone here who interviewed but didnt get an offer sent in an LOI? In oos and was thinking of senting one. I emailed admissions but they havent replied whether or not they accept them...

Are you a Texas resident? Give them a few days to show up on your portal.
If you are OOS you won't get to rank and you will be more like rolling admissions.

I called the admissions office and they told me that LOI are considered "supporting documents" and were due in November. They said that the admissions office will accept them, but they will NOT be uploaded to your application and are not guaranteed to be viewed by the admissions committee.

There's clearly some confusion here with LOI.

Letter of Interest (LOI) - Is a supporting document. Basically, you're saying, 'I love your school'
There is no set deadline for this. Its like an Update Letter people send it several times throughout the long cycle.
Letter of Intent (LOI) - Is a serious commitment to attend the school. You only send it to one school and only when you're on WL.

I'm not sure who you think is confused about a letter of intent vs. a letter of interest, but both do have deadlines. My comments were specifically referring to a letter of intent. The admissions office did say that they would not upload them to the portal if they were received passed November. I confirmed this in writing and via phone call.

Thanks for the clarification !

So I called the admissions office and asked when the people who interviewed on 01/29/2021 should expect a change on their TMDSAS portal to start ranking and the guy said that there is an admissions committee meeting this week.

Does that mean even if you interviewed and are an in-state applicant, you’re not going to rank until they select you to rank?

That would be odd. Right?

Everyone who has had an interview can, and should, rank each school where they have interviewed.

It seems that each school has to manually update the people they have recently interviewed so that their school appears on your portal.
I don't know the inner computer workings of how they do this in conjunction with the TMDSAS portal, but there is a little lag after your interview day.

If it's getting close to the dateline and still not showing up on your portal, message TMDSAS internally on your portal and ask them to help.

Officially, you don’t have to do residency at Tech, but they have only let two people apply to outside programs for the Match. (That’s TWO since the program began... And those were very special cases.) So plan on doing FM residency at a Tech program—all of which are top notch.
What makes their family medicine programs top notch? Im not sure what makes a place a top residency program, but how does techs compare to other programs? And how can I find out more info about that if I am doing FMAT?

I didn't get the email and I pre-matched

I also prematched on Oct. 15th and didn’t get an email... I haven’t gotten any emails since pre-matching. Have they sent anything else?

Hey everyone!
With the pre-match period now over, we've all shifted into the phase of making our rank lists, so I figured I would make another post in this thread for anyone who is trying to decide where to rank Tech-Lubbock!
I am currently finishing my 2 year masters here (1st year we do the MS1 curriculum with the exception of 1 course & 2nd year we then TA those courses). I feel like I have pretty good insight into the culture/other aspects of Tech-Lubbock, so if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a message! I plan on ranking Tech-Lubbock #1, so I can't wait to meet all of my future classmates out there 🙂

You mentioned you ranked lubbock #1 mainly due to scholarship and I'm guessing also due to familiarity so you'll kill ot your first year since it'll be the same classes.

Would you have kept lubbock #1 if you didn't have the scholarship? What draws you most to the school and what limitations compared to others on your list have you come to terms with?

I also wanted to ask how the research scene is at lubbock. Are there plenty of opportunities?

About how long after the interview does it take for TTU to show up on the ranking preference on TMDSAS? I interviewed on 1/8 and it still hasn’t shown up for me & I was wondering.
Hi, did TTU Lubbock ever show up on your ranking preference on TMDSAS? I also interviewed the same day and it still hasn't shown up for me :/ should I email someone about this considering it's February now?

@confusi0n @marinarasauce Yes, by now it should be there, so call or email TTU Lubbock admissions Monday.
You can also do an internal message to TMDSAS on your portal about it - if they remind the school directly it could carry more clout 🙂

Yes mine showed up! I emailed the admissions and they said that they had just updated me in the system so it would be a few business days & maybe do what @wysdoc said to do as well!

Hey!
So I think I still would have kept Tech-Lubbock #1 even without the scholarship, but it probably would be closer!

Pros:
I know the curriculum pretty well & I know the faculty.
I have a decent number of friends here already.
I really like the city of Lubbock, its large enough to have 1 of pretty much everything, but also not so large that traffic is a problem.
The cost of living is pretty low, especially compared to DFW or Houston.
Since it is a more "Isolated" school, the research and shadowing opportunities are much more freely available.
I actually really like the curriculum design and think it will do a great job of preparing me for STEP 2.
The people here are all really nice. People wave at you while you're driving, store owners are smiling, and it overall feels like a very safe city to me.

Cons:
Not as great of a "National Reputation" as a school like UT-Southwestern (But IMO, as long as you are at the top of your class, it won't really matter anyways).
The cultural scene isn't as varied as you would find in a place like Houston or DFW (But there are still a lot of really neat things like First Friday Art Trail).
Lubbock is kind of far away from other Texas cities (5 hours to DFW, 5 hours to El Paso, 6 hours to Austin, 6 hours to San Antonio, & 8 hours to Houston) so if you wanted to go back and visit family you would either need to drive all day or get a flight if your parents live in one of those cities.

How are flights to major airports? Costly?

Any tips for doing well in year one? Are exams very lecture based or slide based? What’s the “key” to getting honors course. Some courses the professors just rely on textbook or slides and others exclusively on what they say in class.

Do most students go to class or study from home?

What do people do for fun over the weekend and Friday night?
So I actually am not sure about flights to major airports (I live about 3 hours east of Lubbock so I just drive). I will ask some friends though I see if I can get some more information for you.
Year 1 is a lot of fun, & the way to succeed in each block varies. For example, in Clinically Oriented Anatomy (COA), the textbook (Moore's Clinically Oriented Anatomy) is worth its weight in gold. Since the exam is 1/2 written & 1/2 practical though, its equally important to make sure & spend a decent amount of time in lab. For the biochemistry, cell biology, & histology block though, the powerpoints/lectures are the most important (IMO)!
I personally am a class-goer. It helps hold me accountable, and I am an auditory learner. Plus, I enjoy the social interaction aspect of being around other people and not just staying home all day haha. During COA, most people will attend class, after that though, most people will only go to mandatory events (Maybe 20-30% of people go to class each day after COA).
For fun it just totally depends on what you're into. I have a really close friend group here so we would always study together during the day & then we would have like a weekly movie night at someone's house. Cricket's was the go-to bar after exams and the music was pretty great always (Before COVID of course). There are also random fun things throughout the year like Lubbock City Lights (LCL) which is basically a super formal charity gala-type thing. There is also Snow Ball which is basically med school prom!

Southwest Airlines flies to Lubbock and from their hub in Dallas (or from Houston) you can go anywhere.

You know, after recalling what the meangreenraider mention about the curriculum for their masters program, they are at a huuuuuuge advantage over MS1s coming in fresh. And then when you have the pressure of passing with honors and all that, it's more stressful than it needs to be.
I will say, Tech-Lubbock feels VERY homey. Like, all of the medical students I've interacted with here over the past 2 years have been incredibly chill & very nice. That is another huge plus to it in my opinion, is that everyone is willing to work together! Everyone shares resources, there are study groups, & overall its not a "Super Competitive" / "Cut Throat" environment like at some other schools. Just my 2 cents haha!

So basically it's not truly P/F. That's a bummer
I think it’s worth mentioning that they switched pre-clinical grading to pass/fail during Covid and when I asked during my interview they said that they are considering keeping it that way (although I can’t know how seriously they are considering it of course). Here’s to hoping they do!
