2020-2021 UC San Francisco

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
kid in my lab just got an interview invite from UCSF. He shouted with excitement in the lab. lol.

Edit: before people ask, he says he has a low MCAT but high GPA and never thought he was going to get an interview invite. So he says that they must really be MCAT blind for interviews. Earliest dates he saw proposed to him for interviews were February 4 and February 8. I think I covered all the questions yall were going to ask. Oh and I think he submitted the main app in September
There's hope!

Can you tell me about when the interviews are typically done? In the morning or afternoon? When does interview day end? Lol they didnt send any information on interview

Usually run from 9-5 but u can be done early depending on when your interview is scheduled. they will send you all the details like a couple days ahead

i know its been like 9 days but when do you think 1/11 interviewees will here back, that course update sheet they sent freaked me out cause i pass/failed the semester

I interviewed in early October and no news yet at all. :’) so I think any day from now.

R as well. Got the app in Nov so didn't really have high expectations. Also, they arguably have the best rejection. The fact that they wish you luck at a future medical school rather than "career goals" is so telling.

Has anyone wrote pre-II interest letters? UCSF is a top choice for me, but I haven't heard anything at all from them. I was complete mid- October

Has anyone gotten an II for MD and JMP? Did you interview for both programs on the same day?
Yes. Mine was just with other JMP applicants and its definitely JMP focused but you are also considered for the regular MD program as well. You do one interview with a JMP rep. and another with a regular MD rep.

Why hasn't UCSF rejected me yet. I literally had zero business applying to this school (complete in August) as an ORM with a LM of <70 and cookie cutter ECs  (I probably just jinxed myself and will get an R real soon )
If your LM is low because of MCAT, you might still have a high chance at ucsf because they don’t utilize the MCAT score at all for choosing whom to send IIs for. This cycle seems to be delayed so the interview season might be extended (last year it ended on the first week of Feb?). Fingers crossed for you!

should i reach out? i was complete 9/25. and have not received a rejection... did they forget about me lol anyone else in the same boat
Me and other applicants I know have been complete with silence since August/early Sep if that makes you feel better haha. I don't recommend reaching out, but I wouldn't be opposed if you were to ask them what's happening right now lol

Do you think we will get another decision wave today or tomorrow?
I really hope so. It's already been a month since the first acceptance notification in December. I wish for upcoming post-II decision releases, they return to the original format of releasing all decisions (A/WL/R), not just As. It would be another pain to just wait if I don't hear anything and watch some's getting A notices.

I'm also hoping for today since its historically been today/tomorrow. But I was also thinking that the last wave of acceptances were released on a Monday, so maybe with the new admissions staff its different (ie next Monday?)... Thoughts anyone?
@wstand you can also chime in your opinion too bud since we both been waiting for so long.

I think anybody who interviewed in november and december hopefully hear back by Jan 31st because that's how they do things every year. TBH, it can be anytime from now on. If we are all unlucky, it will carry onto next month.

I was told on my interview day in october that covid does affect the admissions process for UCSF and that they are later than last year or the year before and that I may hear back in jan, but then they also say who knows, especially there's a new dean now. TLDR: Any time from now, we may hear back.

Right on time haha. I am guessing tomorrow or next Monday. We can't make a guess based on historical data anymore 😢 According to the historical timeline, we should've seen maybe third wave of post-II decision releases by this week. One thing I really hope the admissions do is to let applicants who didn't get their decisions what's coming next. For instance, it could have been much better if people like me got an email saying, "your decision is deferred to the future round of post-II decision release," back in December. I know some schools (like WUSM) tend to give out a few As earlier and then the bulk of decisions late in March but UCSF explicitly states on its website that they have a rolling admissions policy.

I just think that they are considering everyone. UCSF is very sensitive of the applicants. and also everyone on the adcom is working remotely, so it is probably taking a while.

Welp, back in the era of former Dean Wofsy, my application file would've already gone through the voting process and had 1/3 chance each for three choices: A, WL, and R. If UCSF is still using the same format, my situation cannot be explained by COVID-19 delay (my four-month anniversary is coming soon). As long as my file is still under review, I will be grateful. I just hate this uncertainty... Some people including me thought that silence in December = WL or Rs right after holidays.

I agree bud!! me too, four months anniversary coming up for me too. I seriously think UCSF isn't holding back WL or Rs after the holidays and i think they are just considering everyone because if they want to, they would have sent it two, three weeks ago- it will be rather unfair for candidates if they hold WL or Rs until after the holidays. I trust UCSF enough that they are being sensitive to everyone.

@wstand bro be patient and stop whining about the process. Have seen you continuously bashing Dean Albert just cause you haven't heard back. This cycle isn't anything different from previous years and your constant complaining says a lot about the kind of applicant you are. We're living in a pandemic and an insane amount of social unrest. Everyone's doing the best they can. Next round is coming this week or beginning of next.

Sorry for whining about the process, I was just offering my guesstimate on next possible release date. Also, what makes you think I am bashing Dean Albert? I really like her and what I meant about the uncertainty is not personally putting Dean Albert on spot.
As long as I don't see everyone of us who didn't hear back on Monday reporting WLs or Rs in Jan, I love Dr. Albert! She was very kind and overall, the admissions office has given me a nice vibe (even today when I sent an inquiry email). It would've been better to have a predicable cycle but this year was just ripped by the virus that took my thanksgiving, Christmas, and new year's eve away from me. I like how UCSF has been working on removing the bias (such as integrating interviews as part of the holistic review rather than having it as a final decision breaker). Let's hope that some of us desperately waiting for the decision (for me it's been 3 months since I had my UCSF interviews) get good news in the new year.

Hopefully one day before I retire, there would be no need for schools to spell out their demographic profiles (not sure how much progress the college/med school admission progress that focuses on social justice and racial equity has made so far, but as an ORM I support the increase of students who identified as URM admitted to medical schools). One thing I hope that's happening is the consideration of other factors (similar to social determinants of health), such as SES, education background, 1st gen college, immigrants, history of severe chronic illnesses, etc. To be honest, I don't think I have had any disadvantages growing up, and that's what I told to my faculty interviewer. I didn't want to exaggerate my minor barriers just to score higher. As much as I LOVE to be admitted to my DREAM SCHOOL, I will still be fine if someone else who has faced multiple layers of adversity, yet might have "lower" numbers or "less interesting" extracurricular activities, gets the acceptance letter while my file is thrown into the rejection pile because that person definitely deserves the spot.

Sorry for whining one more time @Anonymous.2 but I do understand we have this pandemic and social unrest. But as someone with 0 acceptance so far and very few interview invites, this uncertainty has also been painful as well. I was lucky that I didn't have to wait any longer for the interview invitation from my dream dream dream school but when my anticipation of post-II decision in December wasn't right, I started to think about my next plan B (i.e. when should I start to plan on reapplying?). I thought I was resilient but I guess I am not anymore. Sorry again for this whiny, self-centered post. This will be my last post on this thread.

Just got my pre II R few minutes ago 🙁 complete mid September, OOS. I know that to give everyone a fair chance with COVID that being MCAT blind is best, but I felt my MCAT was a strong part of my app. Best of luck to the rest of you.

@wstand Please do not feel as though you cannot post on this thread. This forum is for all applicants to come together, support one another, and be understanding that stressful environments affect each of us uniquely (let's all be cognizant of that please 🙂. We all have processed the pandemic, social unrest, and med school admissions cycle differently. Honestly, as physicians who will care for people who mentally and emotionally process various illnesses in different ways, it is important for us to remain mindful and respectful of the fact that each person's experience is their own.

Lets also remain respectful and understanding of UCSF's Admissions team that is working so hard for us, even in the face of the pandemic and all of the patients they care for.
