2020-2021 Wayne State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know why my secondaries are so different or has anyone had similar questions? Is it because I am a reapplicant?

My questions:

1) During the stress of the pandemic, what was the one thing you learned about yourself? How has that affected your outlook on the role of medicine?

2)Do you think all physicians should be leaders? Please discuss your reasons.

3) What do you feel your mission is in life and why?

4) What about Wayne SOM is especially appealing to you. Please discuss.
I got these questions too!! Very confused. I got my secondary 10/3.

They changed them because the first question of the last set was ambiguous and they removed the vita portion recently so they wanted more questions to learn about the applicants.
Hm, that makes sense but seems to give a bit of unfair advantage to applicants who applied early, and I am writing this as someone who applied early and got an II.

Omg, do you guys think this could be a way to filter out "late" applicants so they don't have to read them?

I have heard about an automatic reject pile due to lateness
This is as neurotic a response only SDN could come up with

Edit: just saw the username hahah don’t worry so much

Has anyone been able to find out if the one-on-one will be open or closed file? Is that something admissions can disclose?
The faculty interview was completely open file (everything from AMCAS application) while the current medical student only had access to your personal statement and experiences. This was the protocol for my EDP interview, so I'm not sure if it's the same now!

Username checks out. 🙂

As someone who has had to grade more undergraduate papers than I care to think about I see it as a way to just mix things up a bit. Can you imagine those poor sods that have to read thousands of applications? I mean, there's only so much wine a person can drink.

Does anyone who interviewed or got an II know how to get to the interview? My interview is Monday and they still have not provided information.
I believe it is on the portal, after you sign the NDA you have the option to check the agenda on the portal. You should have a web interview tab that appears and after you sign that your schedule should pop up along with the interview start time and the people interviewing you.

Is anyone else confused about how tomorrow's events will proceed? xD so under interview-agenda, it says "The AM 9-11:30 and pm session 1-3:30"

However, under web interview, it just has a bunch of names and associated times, with the first being at 1 pm.

Is that one at 1 pm the introduction? Or is it just a dive into interviews?

I'm just confused because other schools have had some sort of introduction. Thanks in advance for any guidance anyone can offer, sorry for being a pleb

Follow up Question: It says there will be 5 MMI's and two one on one interviews, but all of the interviews on my page are only 9 mins apart, aside from the first one starting at 1pm. Is this how everyone's page looks?

So for me, I have 7 interview slots under the Web Interview section. The first one starting at 9 AM. The next one starts at about 9:45 and then my MMI's start at around 10:30. I believe at the start time of your interview (either 9 or 1) you will have the option of entering the interview in the currently empty status column. So it looks like 45 minutes for each of the one-on-ones and about 9 minutes for each of the 5 MMI's. I assume we just dive into the interview and perhaps our faculty interviewer will give us more information regarding the process before or after the start of the interview. This is an obviously unconventional situation with regards to interviews, so I think we should just be patient and stick to the information on the portal. Hopefully this provides some clarity, I'll let you know if I find out anything else between now and then. Good luck tomorrow!

Guys where do you see all this info for the schedule of the day? 🙂 Do they send info with the link prior to the interview?

In addition to the questions above about links, can anyone comment on what time you started / if there were any presentations beforehand? I distinctly remember my portal saying that Session C started at 10am, but now the agenda only says that the PM group will begin at 1pm. Thanks in advance.
The schedule will show up in your applicant portal once you fill out the NDA and stuff (New tab called "Web Interview"). Session C starts at 12:30pm. An admissions person will do a little overview of how to get to your interviews and navigate the portal and they will send a zoom link for this the day before the interview. Actual interviews start at 1pm and go to ~3:10pm then the admissions person will give you an opportunity to ask any residual questions. Overall very informal for the info session at beginning and end. They said they will release admissions decisions within 4-6 weeks and will be releasing more Rs then previous years (used to put all interviewees on WL, now will be a much smaller WL).

Thank you for this! Do you know when session A starts?

I was one of those people who had to redo the secondary application due to having the previous cycle essay. My complete date is now August instead of July. Will this affect when my applications is viewed?

I was complete around mid August, and received interview in early October. I honestly don't think there is a good way to determine order and I doubt they go in a linear fashion. Earlier is generally better so it may have affected your application, but there is no way to tell. Just sit tight and take refuge in the fact that you don't have an R yet (easier said than done ofc).

Thanks mate.

Ouch 475 interviews :O we almost at the 50% already! Hopefully they keep their word and request more interviews this year because of COVID19!

Why would they request more interviews because of COVID? Where did they state that?

According to someone earlier in the thread who attended an info session, they plan to give out 1200-1500 interviews instead of the typical 1000. This is likely since virtual interviews make it easier for them to evaluate more candidates in a given time and to accommodate for the ~17% influx of applicants(who applied this cycle (per AAMC).

Oof at 475 interviews requested, that's....a lot...

Given we only got like half a page of people saying that they got IIs, I thought it was at least low 300s...

Maybe they will send more this week?

last years thread had some errors with the interview tracker, I would not worry too much yet it is still mid October! They may not have sent out the II's that they listed on the tracker.

Did folks send thank you emails to their interviewers? I didn't catch mine :/

Also, did anyone else get MMI interviewers that were super unenthused and sound like they didn't really wanna be there? I know that Wayne hires random people and they aren't necessarily associated with medicine/the school but it really put a damper on how I thought the MMI's went

this happened to me last cycle! i stuck out my hand to shake theirs and it was so limp and weak that I'm pretty sure it threw me off right out the gate. not to mention that afterwards they didn't seem too interested. ppl in the threads before my interview were talking about how welcoming and nice everyone was so I was just like....what?

What threw me off most with your post was the idea of shaking hands. I forgot we used to do that.

Something I learned from dance, when you're performing, you are "on stage" from the moment you are possibly in view, to the moment you are not. In other words, just because your song is over, doesn't mean you slouch your posture, drop that smile, or change your gaze. You are performing the whole time.

Not sure if that helps anyone, but that's kind of how I approach interviews, should I get any.

I knew someone was gonna say that! I typed it myself and realized how weird it was, haha

Definitely. It was my first interview and I cannot emphasize to you how much I thought I wasn't going to get an interview that cycle. I literally submitted an application so my parents can finally see that I wasn't getting anywhere. So when I got it, it was a lot....But now I feel like I would do a lot better. Have had more time to mature and control nerves 🙂

Anyone who completed the interview. How was it? How was the MMI section? Any advice on how to prep??

Wayne updated their interview tracker to 475?! Did they really give out that many interviews in one week?

Wayne State is about halfway done with interview invites, going off of MSAR data from last year

Don’t know what to make of it. On one hand the have most of their applicant pool by now so they could have it somewhat figured out who they want by now (which is why many at once) On the other hand, that does overload their system

Spent so much time prewriting the empathy/sympathy essay, but now I have different prompts. Anyone knows why they changed prompts in the middle of the cycle?

Honestly? They probably just got bored of reading 8000 of the same responses. This year they switched prompts anyway. Maybe they realized they picked crappy prompts hahah

I wonder if you accidentally got sent last year’s prompts (this was an issue earlier in the cycle).

No, these are different from last year:
1. During the stress of the pandemic, what was the one thing you learned about yourself? How has that affected your outlook on the role of medicine?
2. Do you think all physicians should be leaders? Please discuss your reasons.
3. What do you feel your mission is in life and why?
4. What about Wayne SOM is especially appealing to you. Please discuss.

Also, every time I log out from the secondary portal, it shows an error.
