2020-2021 Wayne State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Don't be nervous about it but just be mindful of it. It's good you got a heads up 🙂 I didn't know that would happen during my MMIs but once I caught on, I told myself not to let it bother me. They won't yell at you or be blatantly rude but their body language can be a bit rude (on purpose, to see how you react). For example, one of my interviewers basically pretended she was not listening the whole time and even rolled her eyes while I was answering. Another one of my interviewers said nothing, he just had a straight face the whole entire time I was talking, no feedback whatsoever. I got WL lol so take it with a grain of salt but that was my experience for the MMI. However, the one on one interviews were super chill 🙂
Thank you so much! You’re going to get accepted soon 🙏 this is my first invite and my only invite so I really wanna make the most out of it 😅

i'm so confused; do they really think that's a good way to conduct interviews? we have no chance to see the campus or meet students since everything is virtual and they think being distant/semi-rude is a good idea to attract interviewees......? I love wayne and their mission but I just dont understand

i think it’s more to throw people off. This isn’t just specific to Wayne but typical of MMI stations at other schools too. They want you to be exposed to a realistic situation and the real world to see how you deal with stress (rude interviewer, crying actor in the room, etc).

yea it seems like that's the main reason! I just can't imagine seeing my interviewer rollher eyes while I answer though....I think I will cry or soemthing LOL

Instead of thinking that they want to see you flustered, I would try to think of it as they want to see you succeed and jump past the hurdles. I used to be a standardized patient in undergrad and we were given really specific instructions to act a certain way. Sometimes I felt awful for the examinee when they were clearly nervous. I always wanted to give them a hint but unless they said key things I wasn't allowed.

I haven't done an MMI or an med school interview, and haven't been invited yet, so definitely take my words with a large grain of salt!

How receptive is WSU to sending a letter of intent post- interview? Do they want us to send them?

Yep. Was put on WL after interview last cycle and this cycle haven't even gotten an II. Complete late July :'(
ya i think Wayne's updating the tracker a lot but still has to send out most of those invites. I got my interview after they updated the tracker this month so you could receive great news soon! 🙂

I think it depends on the individual, and i dont want to stress you out by describing my own anxiety about it, but i thought the mmi was preposterous. The interviewers seemed like they were advised not to express any approval or disapproval, but they took it to some weird extremes. One of the people was very rude to me before i even started talking, and another interviewer was layed back in a reclining chair with her eyes closed and arms stretched out like she was barely awake. Also, some of the questions they asked were very tangentially related to the mmi prompt. I dont think im allowed to quote the exact prompts but in a simple non-medical ethical dilemma prompt (like a retail store return without a receipt) one of the questions was "what kind of coping skills would you use to handle the stess of this?" like really? If a retail return stresses me out i probably shouldnt be applying to medical school. Anyway, the traditional interviews were much more relaxed and the interviewers clearly knew my application very well. They did, however, ask more standard ethical dillemma questions, so the whole interview day was roughly 70% mmi-type questions and only 30% getting to know you/your experiences.
I had a similar situation with the coping skills question and thought “really??” as well so this made me lol. The question caught me a little off guard because it felt so strange given the benign scenario. I was just kinda like “well... I don’t think this scenario is serious enough to really require coping skills, but...” and then described a situation where I actually needed to use coping skills.

To others reading, Wayne commissions local community leaders (i.e. not faculty) to help out with MMI interviews which is pretty cool, and speaks to the med school’s relationship with the community. With that in mind, I wouldn’t take it personally if a couple of your MMI interviewers are not quite as “polished” as faculty that have experience interviewing hundreds or even thousands of applicants. The napping in a recliner vibe is pretty inappropriate though lol. In 2-3 of my MMI stations the interviewers had their cameras off, which felt uncomfortable and gave me VITA flashbacks.

To echo OP, the student and faculty interviews were really great, and felt much more relaxed. The student interview was more structured, but the faculty interviewer had just a few questions related to my app that they knew very well, and the rest of the time we talked about Wayne. Good luck to all!

I wanted to chime in for those who will be interviewing here in the near future since some of the comments in this thread give a very scary picture about Wayne’s interviewing style.

BTW This was my 10th interview and I think I can give a good comparison of programs by now. Overall, I’d rate their interview day 6/10 in difficulty, and just because they have back-to-back interviews including 5 MMI + 2 traditionals, otherwise it’d be more a 4/10.

My interview was last Monday and I though the MMI wasn’t too stressful. I’ve had 3 MMIs so far and this was pretty average with the other ones. Some interviewers gave me body language feedback while others didn’t, but all were paying attention to my comments. Some follow up questions were slightly weird, but nothing you couldn’t answer after preparing for any MMI.

About the traditional interviews, the student one was serious and formal -probably due to his personality. The faculty one was awesome though, one of my best interviews so far. He knew the highlights of my application and was very interested in getting to know me as a person/applicant. I really had a fun time talking with my interviewer. Only advice would be to know your “Why Wayne” and prepare to be asked about other interviews/acceptances.

PM me if you have questions, I’m more than willing to help!

Do you guys think they stigmatize reapplicants who interviewed before?

Does anyone here know of a reapplicant who went through 2 interview cycles with Wayne, and then got the A?

I don't remember which page/post it was, but there was someone on here who was accepted and that it was their THIRD time applying to Wayne. So I mean, I think the fact they are willing to talk to someone on the third try means they aren't heartless...

has anyone interviewing in the new year been able to see names for faculty or any more info on the portal?

Yeah and also I heard MSAR isn’t entirely accurate with WL data, so it could be even more (as seen in past years’ threads)

I have an interview scheduled for Dec 9th but I can't find a link to the interview or information about my interviewers in the applicant portal. Where can I see this information? Does it take some time to show up on the portal?

I am actually for 12/2 and still don't have a link... could anyone provide any insights?

M2 here who works closely with the admissions process. If you think an MMI judge is being rude or trying to put you off, please report them. The purpose of the MMI judge is to be absolutely blank to give all students a standardized "wall" if you will to talk to and answer the question. Just as the judges are not supposed to smile, nod, or give any positive language, they should not be giving any negative language either.

Thank you! Haven’t had the interview yet but great to know that the school is being supportive in every process 🙂

I doubt all 224 As have been announced though, and they always admit more than the number of students matriculating

I accidently submitted my application Nov 9 when I thought I had it submitted in July, It was completely finished. Luckily, I received an interview invite a week later. I am wondering if my luck ran out as I haven't interviewed yet, and they have offered a full class size admission. Any advice or thoughts about the interview/process in general or my specific situation?

I stalked older threads after I found out Wayne State waitlists the majority of people after the new year. Basically, it seems like we will most likely be waitlisted, but admissions do this to have more time to review the applications. Plus, Wayne has a big waitlist movement and as far as I am aware, people who interviewed late has priority in the waitlist (according to older threads). This all may change this year though because Wayne is apparently a bit delayed and they are interviewing more this cycle.
