2020-2021 Wayne State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have my interview at Wayne this week. For the agenda, they have station 5 starting at 9:00 am and, station 1 starts at 9:09 lol. Is station 5 then technically station 1? Also, did everyone do 5 stations for the MMI, or did it end up being less (they say it's up to five stations)? Thank you 🙂

Yes it's 5 stations! They're most likely numbered depending on the scenario, so each station has its own number and the order is randomized for each person 🙂

were all of yours just discussions? or were some of them actual acting/roleplaying?

OOSers, can I ask why did you apply to Wayne State?
I’m OOS, but regional. I love big school atmospheres (my undergrad was massive) and think Detroit reminds me a lot of my own hometown with a patient population that has similar struggles/health concerns. I think it would be the perfect place to learn to be a well rounded physician with clinical experience that begins early!

Practice navigating through the website, you have time on your break right after the beginning introductions. It's a bit confusing and it'd be super rough to lose valuable MMI time (like 3-5 minutes which is significant) by not knowing how to read the prompt and pop into the break room very quickly.

thanks for the tip! would you mind explaining what you mean by 'confusing to navigate the website?'

Guess so😔. Unless it’s later this week. In the past years do they only do one specific day or is it more randomized?
It seems like there is some sort of schedule that admissions use. Not sure whether it’s day based or date based though

Yeahh that’s what I was thinking. Thought there would be some decisions today since break ended and they release on Mondays usually but it’s still silent. Hoping for some movement later this week or next Monday!

Anyone think it odd that they asked us to fill out 2020-2021 fafsa instead of 2021-2022 fafsa since we will be in the 2021-2022 academic year from july?

I didn't even notice that error lol. They probably just copied and pasted the email template from last year.

Email also asks international students to fill out a 2019-2020 FAFSA form, so I think they forgot to update dates lol

I feel like Wayne State is kinda weird with the way they communicate things compared to others schools and I’ve seen several mistakes in their system (like the FAFSA thing and when they accidentally sent out emails that weren’t supposed to go out)

Yep, wait till you get started, it is known amongst student that you often get Wayne stated by them!

We had time to read the prompt and then immediately when entering the "room" with the MMI facilitator they asked us specific questions about our response. It was very well guided
so then you didn't have any role-playing at all?

Not in mine! It was all "what would you do in this scenario" and then follow-up questions about how you'd respond to different ways it could play out. There was no acting or anything

Thanks!!! I am so nervous for this one because it seems so dependent on who your interviewers are. the SDN feedback is like half "sooo laid back, personable, just get-to-know-you, low stress" and half "got grilled on what my freshman year polisci course was about"

people who had their student interviews canceled/postponed... did the rescheduled interview take place before the original interview date for any of you?

my original date was 1/13, and now they're saying that the interview is expected to be completed no later than 1/18...

Were you in the PM track? I am scheduled to interview on 1/13 (AM track) and I didn't receive any email about cancellations.

Extremely nervous for my upcoming interview... anyone have any advice or insight on what to expect. I would greatly appreciate it!
I was really nervous for this interview too since it was my first, and I thought it might be my only interview for the cycle. I had lots of technical difficulties, had to make up 2 MMI stations after the interview portion of the day was supposed to be over, and I completely bombed one station. I still got in somehow. My advice to you is to practice the standard interview questions (have three points for why Wayne, why medicine, etc) and then start thinking about stories from all of your different activities to show your great qualities rather than tell. I liked using my stories from my CNA experience to answer questions, and it was well received. Also keep your answers to each question around a minute, but why Wayne and why medicine can be longer. Feel free to message me if you have more questions/need reassurance 🙂

For accepted students, have you received any notice for the required background check? It says on the portal that we would receive notice sometime after Jan. 1st 🙂

Could you or other current students provide some insight about the work-life balance at Wayne State? I would like to know if students enjoy their lives while attending Med school? Although studying hard is important, I believe that the quality of life and ability to engage in activities that make you happy is also important in making a decision on where to go.
Thanks!
The work-life balance is what you make of it. If you are happy to just pass your exams and have a good general understanding of the material, then you will definitely have more free time than someone who wants to get comprehensive honors. It's all what you want to get out of med school. To be a good residency applicant, I would suggest spending some of you free time on research and student orgs, but even with that it is easy to have free time and a good solid sleep schedule.

I don't think any med student enjoys life whilst in school just because it's a lot of work regardless of the free time (at least for the first two years) and it just feels like more school. Like, when am I going to be taking care of patients, right? Across the board med students from many schools say that 3rd and 4th year are much better than 1st and 2nd year just because of what you are doing.

It's a lot of work, oftentimes I don't have the time I want to do what I want, but looking ahead to my future I do not regret it one bit; in fact, if I hadn't chosen to go to med school I would have regretted it for the rest of my life.

For people who interviewed this week, did any of you find that the MMI interviewers asked questions and said bye so fast (felt very rushed)? Idk if this was just my experience

has everyone's experience with the MMI been pretty normal? just like typical MMI type questions that you find online?
