2021-2022 Miami

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Last year someone had their app as under review for the entirety of the cycle and then received a rejection. They didn't even look at the person's application. Hoping that isn't happening to me or anyone else. Been complete since early to mid july I forget when but still not scored
This happened to me last cycle. I think someone posted on last years thread that they look at every app but not every app gets scored, don’t know how true that is though

This^^^^^^^. It's not what people want to hear, but it's no different than any other school. The only difference is the message on the portal.

ALL schools perform a triage when applications come in. Does anyone really think any school spends hours on each of several thousand applications before making preliminary determinations?

OTOH, why on earth would any school not want to take a look at each application, even if for only 2 minutes? The only reason I could think of is auto-R based on stats after collecting secondary fees. While I'm sure that is done at some schools, Miami doesn't seem to be one of them, and, even that is a form of review, isn't it?

The first pass is surely no more than a few minutes. If they have interest, they score it for a possible interview, which you never find out about at most schools, where you either eventually receive an II or you don't. If they don't have interest, that's it, you never get scored, and you will eventually be rejected, whether they tell you 5 minutes after you submit a secondary or not until next July, if then.

Anyone know how we are supposed to upload a photo of ourselves for the secondary? The directions state "1. Use the link in the secondary application to upload a photograph of yourself (showing from the waist or shoulders up). The image must be a JPG, JPEG, PNG OR GIF file." , however, I see no link on the secondary...

it pops up at the end when you submit the secondary

should i even bother submitting a secondary with little research experience? I didnt realize it was so research heavy until now

What does you portal say? I'm confused by what it is supposed to say when you have been scored vs not scored
go back a few pages on this thread & you will find a copy/paste from someone about their "being scored" message.

Is there a consensus on how early/late people can be scored? I submitted my secondary on 7-13 and I'm still not scored so I did not know if that was normal or a cause for concern.
Check out my post here: #291

Anybody unable to get into the portal... again? Website continues to hang when I attempt to log in

edit: nevermind, it seems like the mobile website is stuck but the desktop version of chrome works fine.

Hmm. Complete 8/2, still unscored.

Either they score out of order or they've skipped me.
Like just about every school, they absolutely do review out of order, and they don't "skip" anyone. Unfortunately, this extra level of transparency leads to unnecessary anxiety among us.

Many schools will review you and then decide to put you aside until later in the cycle, or flat out decide to reject you, without changing your status on their portal from "under review," sometimes for an entire cycle. These guys happen to let some people know they proceeded to formal II scoring.

Based on SDN posts from prior cycles, though, this is really not worth getting worked up over. Some people reported receiving IIs without ever seeing their portal flip to showing they were scored. Others were scored and never received IIs. And, of course, many people who showed being scored ended up receiving IIs.

Bottom line, Miami is inconsistent in how they present the information to us, but they are just like everyone else in that everyone is reviewed, but everyone doesn't make it to the next step in the process.

When you've been complete since 7/12 and still haven't been scored.........

If Miami is going to do this BS they should've just not sent me a secondary and not had me waste my time and money. Really stupid honestly
Yeah, but this isn't news. They do it every cycle. It's a great school, but they have a well earned reputation for having a very user unfriendly admissions office.

From their perspective it's not stupid at all. They got your money, and they have you on standby in case they want to do anything with your application.

If you seriously thought most schools cared about your time or your money, now you know better. On second thought, they DO care about your money. They want it. And, for the record, don't for a minute think anyone is going to read this and not apply next cycle because of it. Sellers' market.

Anyone still have this message?
Your application is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee.
I believe that is the message you get if it hasnt been scored yet/in the process of getting scored.
Mine still says this

I've realized now, and this is well-spoken

Mine changed sometime this past week to say "Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine," so I assume that I have been scored.

“If you don’t like it, don’t apply”

the only losers in this process are the applicants

Hello! To the M2s at Miller (maybe even M1s?), can you give us a little insight and review on how the new curriculum is going? I read a little about it and have a few questions.

-I read it was mostly just mandatory PBL, are there no lectures at all? Recorded lectures?
-How does the curriculum make you feel about Step 1? I know it's p/f, but do you feel like the curriculum is preparing you for when you have to study on your own? Also, how long is dedicated?
-What's the general consensus on this new curriculum? Do your fellow classmates like it?
-What's the best part about it? The worst part?
-Now that it has been a whole year since your app cycle, has UM been all you hoped it would be?

Thank you!! Best of luck everyone!

@Icebird Just saw you're an M1, any thoughts on these questions?

I've had this secondary pending since late July..is it worth submitting? I didn't know they recommend a 2 week turnaround but they just said so online. I don't want the delay to seem like a lack of interest..I just work a lot

Anyone getting II's yet, or is it still early yet?
to my knowledge the first interview date is 9/20 (at least for the normal MD program not sure about dual degree programs), and first date for interview decisions is 10/6, so IIs have been sent out since august but it is still early in the game

it seems like they haven't sent out II's in a while, not since that first wave around 8/16... maybe we'll see some more action soon now that the school is probably in the swing of things post-summer

You might as well if you’d like to come here. I received the secondary in July and didn’t submit it until late October ish and still got in (albeit interviewed late)

That's awesome thank you for letting me know, I've been getting so paranoid about my turnaround time. Did you end up going? What were your stats & ECs like?

Yup I’m an MS3 now. 3.8 and 515 with really good ECs. Born and raised down here so it was a good fit

Is anyone actually able to access the portal? I haven't been able to for a while now.

Has anyone received anything? It seems like the II send-outs have become stagnant.

It's not stagnant. They go in waves, everywhere.

Reviews are being performed, everywhere, every day, but schools don't constantly send IIs out, every day. Sometimes it's because they wait for a meeting to vote, and sometimes it's just because. Is there really any school where IIs are just dribbling out every few days, continuously? If so, I haven't noticed in several cycles.

Just be patient. They say they conduct interviews well into next spring. I believe them! 🙂

There are many schools I have noticed are much more consistent than Miami at least and haven’t had a period of silence greater than a week. I’m simply suggesting that they’ve seem to have gone through quite a ~long~ period. I have no doubt they are reviewing everyday, I just wonder why they haven’t released the results of said review for about 3 weeks. Of course, this is simply information gathered from this thread, Reddit, and the tracker.
