2021-2022 NYU, Long Island

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Though we can't exactly say what the group activity was, I found it to be a lot less stressful than I expected! I'm sure that other interviewees will agree.
100% agree. No need to prepare, be yourself, and just have a good time.

Hi guys, for the student sesh night, what is the dress code? Can we just be casual or were people dressed to the nines lol

I dressed casually, and so did the majority of the other applicants. Some came in suits. However, the med students for my session were dressed casually so I think casual dress is fine!

Have any mid-October interviewers heard anything back yet? Getting antsy for the cut!

Did anyone interview early October and still get no response yet?

Post-II "On-Hold", interviewed 10/15. Was kinda expecting the R after a horrible interview so I guess that's nicer 😅

Little confused — I was put on the “waitlist” via portal earlier when the error occurred. I was told I was off the waitlist and being considered for the pool in Feb. Now today I was told I’m “on hold.” Just a wee bit confused because they told me I was in the Feb pool but they gave me a new decision? Idk 😅

The heck… I don’t think it hurts to shoot an email and ask for clarification. Maybe screenshot their original message?

+2, also was wondering what this “on hold” means? Does it mean we have to wait till February for the final decision?

No, you would get an email that says you’ve been selected for final consideration for admission.

I’m not sure if people get off hold and into the final pool between now and February, and I believe a previous poster said this is the first year they’re doing the “final pool” thing.

I’m confused, did they say the email sent to everyone today was a mistake like last time?

Oh sorry I was responding to a post I made earlier today (#167). They told me earlier today I was on hold. Then an hour or two later said that I’m not on hold.

I got rejected on 10/21 and then got an email this morning saying that I was "on hold" and my poor little heart was excited for like 2 seconds and then I stopped and thought this HAD to be a mistake. So I emailed them.

I was right :cryi:

Why did they send this “on hold” email by mistake to a couple of people? Do you guys think they sent this email in general by mistake??

They are already sending out rejections?

just a random question, but if you wanted to do residency in a field outside of the one in your application originally, does anyone know how that process goes? because this is a 3 year program, and if in some parallel universe where I actually end up going to this school, that would be a year less to do important things like research, etc. to try and match eventually into something else. like, I remember the dean saying they would support you and help you through the process, but just wondering if anyone has any additional insight into this issue

Unfortunately/Fortunately, name goes a big way for residency application. Matching into any mid competitive specialties (anes, rads, gen surg) should be no problem from a 3 year program, because most pd only see "NYU" and don't really read into the rest (too many applicants to screen). The school looks to have few competitive specialties attached to it (Uro and ortho), so those are not out of reach, as most people match home or an away. And for the rest of the specialties, I'm sure it would be easy to get a research year position at the manhattatan campus.

awesome, thank you very much for the insight, I was initially worried because it was a three year program, if it happened that an individual for whatever reason did not want to pursue the specialty that was written on their application (and the path they would be on for nyulisom's residency) the 3 year time period to find something else/research would seem difficult. looking back now though, if perhaps a person did a year of research outside the 3 years for the new specialty they would be interested in, perhaps that would help? I do remember pretty well the admisson's committee saying they would fully support an individual applying the traditional match route too, so it does seem like there wouldn't be any "locking in" of sorts to a particular field to which you originally applied. thank you again for the help, this clarifies a lot for me :)

I remember admissions saying this too during interview day. I also remember a current student saying that they are well supported and that there (might?) be 1 student pursuing traditional match, but don't quote me on that! Current student also mentioned that there are students who pursue research during the 3 years tho it can be tough to balance for some, but that could be an avenue for you to demonstrate interest in another specialty.

Research is pretty catch all, one pub is equal to 3 items on eras (pub, poster, oral). Every specialty except the competitive ones (Derm, plastics, ortho), research is not as important. I'm sure it would not be difficulty to write up a few case reports during the time and join in on some resident projects, and it's pretty easy to hit more than avg per charting outcomes for mid tier specialties. PDs mostly look at step score, letters, and name of school/research, and I'm sure some PD will want that NYU name on their roster list.

Hi! This was well answered by the other person but I thought I'd add a few notes (current student). Every student will still apply via ERAS regardless of whether you take the spot that NYULISOM accepted you for so technically everyone applies the traditional match route. The school will actually encourage you to apply out too, to get a feel for the interview process/other residencies, and if you want to match to NYULI then you just rank them high on your list. There is no "locking in" to a field as you mentioned, the leadership emphasizes that whenever a student finds a specialty they like to contact them ASAP so that they can arrange for a specialty mentor in the respective field.

There are some current M3s that are applying to specialties outside of the 4 (gen surg, ob/gyn, peds, IM), I believe some are applying urology and IR. We won't know how successful they are yet till later this year, unfortunately. Good news is, research and other leadership roles are very bountiful here; there are spreadsheets of research opportunities and hardly and competition (perks of a small school). Residents and attendings are very open to having medical students join their team, all you need to do is shoot an email. Hope this helped!
Ok now how do I convince them to take me ;)

hey there :) thank you very much for reaching out and clarifying these things. I didn't know that yall still applied vias ERAS either way, don't know how I missed that loool. Definitely glad how open the school is to students pursuing other fields if interested. If you don't mind me asking a few questions: is the 3 year curriculum a lot to handle (like significantly more so than what you have heard the 4 year curriculum generally looks like)? do you have time to unwind and see family, etc. , given the accelerated nature of the course? Do people take a year off between MS2 and MS3 (or between MS1 or MS2) for research, other opportunities? and biggest question- do you enjoy the school and experience overall?

I appreciate you big homie :)

[definitely should have went to the student session but my dumb butt missed that opportunity]

Regarding post-ii update letters--are you guys sending an email to notify them that you submitted an update to the portal? Or just submitting it without contacting them?

I just got II from this school after months of radio silence! It's kind of a reach for me but I'm very excited. I noticed that there is only one interview date available... is that normal?

I'm also psyched out about how few spots there are compare to II's :|

grats on the II, what date was available?

Interviewed on 11/10 and haven't heard anything yet.

How long did earlier interviewees wait till they got their cut emails?
