2021-2022 Pennsylvania (Perelman)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone who interviewed here have any advice or stories of what it was like?
Same as above. Very conversational except for the few mandated questions which have a more formal interview feel. Try to think of a few topics you would want to talk about, things you know deeply/are very interested in. Since the interview is so open ended there are a lot of opportunities to guide the conversation to whatever topic works best for you.

Can any current students or those familiar with the school speak to what Penn uniquely values in applicants? Interviewing here soon and this is my top choice!
Just something I noticed, but I don't know if this is true from an admissions point of view, just how I felt while interviewing.
Many schools say something along the lines of "If you've received this interview, then you are academically fit for our school. This interview is just about seeing fit." Yet, they still ask questions like "What is your greatest strength", "what do you bring to our school that sets you apart", and just generally focus on how accomplished of an applicant you are.

Penn is the first school where it felt like both my interviewers cared little about my accomplishments. The interview solely focused on "what are you like as a person", essentially just are you fun to be around? are you eloquent? do you have interesting hobbies? do we like you and do we want to be around you? What have you achieved seemed almost deliberately avoided.

Of course, I'm sure achievements matter a good deal when curating a class post-interview, but I do think to a significant degree, Penn does believe that all its interviewers are fully qualified to attend, and barring unless you are an absolute superstar, the question "would be like spending time with you as a student, faculty, or otherwise?" decides if you are accepted post-interview.

A bit of a side note, but I was a little sad upon seeing how little of the entering class is in-state (13%). At places like Temple and Pitt, around 40% of the class is in-state. Of course, they're public so incomparable, but even at private schools like Drexel and Geisinger, a significant portion of students are in-state. While I don't expect Penn to be 30%+ in-state like these schools, I was hoping it would be closer to 20% at least. Oh well...

Congrats!!! Have you done any updates since submitting that you think might have tipped the scale? Or do you think it was just out of order?

Does this school accept update letters? I don't know if I should send one, it has been radio silent since July. Anyone else in the same situation? Also do we know when the last interviews are?

Lots of people are in the same situation. They definitely accept updates, although it is unknown whether they move the needle pre-II. If you haven't heard since July, you have nothing to lose, assuming you have something significant to say.

It looks like the last IIs went out in the middle of January last year. You'll know when they are done, because they are pretty good about sending out pre-II Rs once they are done interviewing.

Congrats!!! I love seeing you with IIs on all of the threads I follow

Are there any current students here I may be able to DM with questions?

I wasn't accepted last year but got my admissions decision on March 3rd, so it'll be a couple more months most likely before acceptances roll out.

Based on previous threads it looks like most of the time they finish by the third week of January and then send rejections in early February. Not sure if anyone has heard anything from the committee on the remaining interview days.

Thank you! I believe today is the last day of interviews. I heard this from a friend of mine who also interviewed at Upenn this week. So I might be wrong.
