2021-2022 SUNY, Downstate (Brooklyn)

That’s really the most important question at this point. Like I interviewed with programs last month that got back to me in two weeks and downstate has been silent. A your still under review email would be nice even if they haven’t reached a decision. I feel like they are waiting for April 1st to get a sense of their numbers

why is april 1 important?

That’s when people holding multiple acceptance have to narrow it down to three schools. Right now lower tier school programs are not able to project confidently who is actually coming to their program yet. Most waitlist movement will probably happen after April 31st

it’s April 15th

Does anyone know the attire for the phone interview? I'm having mine through zoom

Do yourself a favor and wear a suit jacket, button down, and tie. I would say not to go too eccentric on shirt and tie color/ pattern. While plenty of people could be successful showing up in just a button down, or a button down and suit with no tie, you better believe there are some old heads on these adcoms that expect the traditional professional attire, and will write you off the second they see you underdressed. It’s part of professionalism, so just play it safe. Good luck!!!

Ps- I’ll add that, in each of my interviews, there has been ONE guy there undressed. Each time, he is the only one underdressed and sticks out like a sore thumb. Please, for the sake of all things cringe, don’t be that guy!

Just got my financial aid package! Loans, loans, more loans, lots of loans. But not the most expensive place in the whole world.

Got financial aid package as well. So far only loans.
Does anyone know if they offered any need/merit-based grants in previous years?

I got the email for the financial aid but everything on the portal says not applicable/no value found. Did they just not post anything yet or am I not being offered any loans 😭😭

Try changing award years and messing around with buttons, it should finally appear

I can't remember the exact details and don't want to steer you wrong, but in one of the "virtual chat" sessions a few months ago, they mentioned that they don't typically don't offer a ton of grants/scholarships because their tuition is already one of the lowest (at least for in-state).

That said, while the administration is kind of a mess here sometimes, they're all super nice and pretty responsive. So I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to ask if you haven't yet!

I interviewed on Monday (3/7) and they said I should be receiving a phone call from a student within the week. It is Friday and I still haven't heard anything. At what point do I send an email to admissions to let them know I have not heard?

I'd say wait a calendar week (so until this Monday). I waited one week and then on the 8th day I was about to email them when they emailed me saying they were running behind on student interviews and we should hear from our person shortly. I believe I heard from mine later that day.

And the student probably won't just call you out of the blue to schedule a time, they'll almost definitely text or email you for that (mine was email)

So when accepting the MPH - it says "this is a shared form for the School of Medicine MD/MPH program and the School of Public Health (MPH applicants only)" does that mean I've been admitted for MD/MPH? I only applied MD/MPH.

hi its your friendly neighborhood non-interview invitee!!! This is what my "offer response" page looks like and I got an MPH acceptance but no MD interview (yet?!). I applied MD/MPH but since the application processes/cycles are different you need an offer letter from each (aka MD and MPH, MPH doesn't mean you got MD unfortunately)

I haven't gotten mine yet either. Should I be concerned?
I also did not get this email (admittedly I have not figured out if we are able to log into our SUNY Downstate email yet, so maybe it's sitting there waiting for me.) But I was able to find my award letter by logging into the financial aid self-service portal using the netID and password emailed to me from admissions.

Have my student phone interview in a few days. Are they supposed to ask specific questions? or is it more conversational? Not sure what to expect

For me, they did have like 3-4 questions that they asked but it was very low-key and then afterwards you get to ask them any questions and pick their minds a bit. Much less stressful than the first interview! You will be fine 🙂

If this year is similar to last year, they're not going to drop another round of WL until end of April, with acceptances coming in May. It's super ****ty how they do this tbh.

Agreed- it's wild that they're so non-chalant about not communicating with applicants.

Yah. It makes me not want to go here. TBH, I'm on the verge of just withdrawing my app. The unprofessionalism and disrespect towards the candidates is something to take note of. I hope someone from their adcom reads this and previous year's threads to see how distasteful we all find their treatment of applicants.

Two questions: is the interview open file? and can I send an additional LOR to the school via AMCAS? I originally submitted a committee letter.

Thanks in advance!

I interviewed in early December, and he said I was right on the line with whether or not I would hear back in the first batch (released at the end of Feb). I guess the adcom is so big and the meetings so long they just do them in a couple of big batches. I believe he said if I didn't make it into the first batch, the next batch hears back in April.

And it's not just Downstate obviously. I know the # of apps each school gets is ridiculous, but I wish the AAMC would just force everyone to move their timeline up a bit. Even just a month or two. It's still insane to me that two application cycles overlap — schools are still working through waitlists when they receive the next year's applications. I'm not expecting to hear from my remaining schools until late April/early May at the earliest. Even then, most schools give those taken off a waitlist about a week to respond, so each time, it's another week until the next batch hears.

Can I get a breakdown of how schools spend their $125 x 10,000 = 1.25 million in application money pls? (AMCAS surely takes a cut, but still)
