2021-2022 UC San Francisco

I mean UCSF certainly still does a 512 screen, probably, so it's not like a 472 MCAT 4.0 is getting in, as some of you seem to be suggesting lmao.

Further, they get the cream of the crop and still have a 517 median, so MCAT score is clearly not something they place that much relative value on.

Received secondary! IS, AMCAS verified 5/31, received 6:42pm EST

What makes you say they do a 512 screen? They literally say across the website MCAT will not be used

I mean most schools at that level just do an automated screen. To my understanding, the reviewers won't be using the MCAT when subjectively doing the evaluations and II's. But that occurs after all the automated stuff, so they wouldn't even have any 490s in the pile.

Also it's pretty naive to take what they said at face value. This just reminds me of colleges going 'test blind' so more people would apply...they still all had high a** scores. For UCSF it would purely be a self-imposed liability to NOT screen people who literally have no chance at admission, as they'd be wasting II spots and ultimately just screwing themselves over.

Even looking at the 2021 entering class (MSTP side of things) they are not even reporting MCAT score, as in it wasn't used at all. I am confident that you are incorrect, and I will just have to disagree with you and leave it at that. I would benefit from them evaluating MCAT, but they say they arent so we should approach them as if that is the truth.
"All candidates will be screened and interview decisions will be offered without utilization of an MCAT score."

?

Screening and decisions made without an MCAT, yes. The MCAT being neither a component of the screen nor the interview decisions.

To me that statement means they screen applicants (academics, subscores), then later evaluate them without the MCAT.

Not that it matters though. I'm sure most of us are above the screens anyway, especially applying to UCSF. So I guess it would be irrelevant.

I'm applying to this school with a 3.4 cgpa and a 508 MCAT. I'm just shooting my shot even though I know it's far out of reach. I worked as a scribe at UCSF and doing research here, so hoping I at least a get a secondary, if not II.

Best of luck to everyone! 🙂

Yea tricky wording, but I think it means they won't use academic metrics after the secondary stage for interview and admissions decisions.

i know someone that got into UCSF with a 508 MCAT so i dont now the validity of this 512 screen 🤔

Has anyone got a secondary verified July 13 and after lol. This backlog of mcat or not is making the chat hard to tell when people are getting secondaries,etc...

I did. Got mine on 8/3, submitted 8/4. Got verified/AMCAS was sent 6/25.

Has anyone with a GPA < 3.72 (UCSF's 25th percentile) and an MCAT > 518 (UCSF's 50th percentile) received a secondary yet? I'm in this position and haven't got one yet and I'm wondering if it's correlated to their process being MCAT blind
I am also in this boat (lower GPA but high MCAT). Been verified since 7/13 and IS but haven't received a secondary. I'm really hoping the MCAT blind aspect of the process isn't what's keeping them from sending me a secondary 🙁

I’m also in this position (below their 10th percentile GPA and above their 90th percentile MCAT) and have not gotten one. Although it’s certainly not helping, I don’t know if that’s necessarily the problem. They are obviously still sending out secondaries to people who transmitted day 1, so the jigs not up yet. Maybe we got deprioritized because of GPA, and they’ll get to us eventually.

My app was transmitted on the first day, still without a secondary. Have I been screened? LM of 77 if that matters.

There was someone who received their secondary in October during last cycle

Hey babybluee,
when were you verified?
Got verified/AMCAS was sent 6/25 (I just liked your comment because I know others are asking the same question).

I know people who got verified after 7/13 and are still waiting on secondaries. It took 40 days to receive mine from them. I know a friend who got verified two weeks after me and got UCSF in 7 days after, far before I did. It seems pretty random and I wouldn't spend your time and energy worrying over this since it is out of your control (I say this as someone who totally did the opposite and freaked out for weeks for no reason).

UCSF take their time on processing primaries and sending secondaries. People have been said to get secondaries as late as the end of September/beginning of October from UCSF, so don't freak out. Have that one essay ready to go though, so it will be a quick turn around if and when you do get it.

I know someone who is currently at UCSF as an M1 and received a secondary in October (after being verified in late June) - and had received an MCAT score of 497.

In this respect, I understand that the school is giving the MCAT increasingly less credence given that the test appears to measure not much more than how well one will do on licencing exams - and the scores appear to be uncorrelated with how well one performs - and how well one does - as a doctor practicing medicine. (I might even venture a guess that the scores might be negatively correlated how well one would do practicing certain specialities... but that's another matter entirely.)

weren't they blind last cycle though? If he got in with a 497 in an mcat blind cycle, I'm not sure you can make any judgements.

Is the deadline 4 weeks from the date at midnight or 4 weeks exact to the time? Anyone know? My deadline is coming up fast

"Please describe your most recent research project, its importance, and how it captured your interest. 750 words max" - MSTP prompt

Does anybody know if this means the most recent *complete* project or most recent as in current work? Graduated in May so the former would be undergrad work / senior thesis, but the latter would be a current research project I started in June. I'm inclined to go with the former since I'll have more to talk about it

Does anyone know what percentage of applicants actually receive a secondary?

I thought it was much higher than that
I've also seen people in previous years throw around more like 2/3 get a secondary, but would have to dig to find that citation

Edit: Found the citation quicker than I thought. In last year's thread, a few people claim that they heard in a UCSF webinar that they get approx 7500 apps each year and send out ~5000 apps

Someone in the UCLA thread mentioned from a past interview it was reported that 2500/7000 people received UCSF secondaries or about 35%. I’m assuming the OOS percent is lower and the IS percent is higher.

not sure how reliable this is but

I honestly don't think anything posted on reddit is that reliable, and this in particular is pretty obviously unreliable.

If the school was performing such a brutal screen up front, it would stand to reason that the vast majority of applicants (2/3) were not receiving secondaries, and that is simply not reflected in SDN posts. Moreover, if so few people were receiving secondaries, the reported II rate would be much higher than what we see every year (basically, it would be around 20% rather than what it actually is, which is under 10%).

My money is on someone transposing their numbers, and that mistake just being repeated in posts, both here and on reddit. 1/3 out rather than 1/3 in just makes a lot more sense when you stop and think about it.

For those that keep asking about when others got their secondary, just know that UCSF verifies some people really fast and others take months regardless of when they were verified. If you read through the thread and you will see the large variation in when people hear back and references to similar situations over the past 3 years. I know it is hard not to get in your head and start doubting yourself as to whether you have been screened out (I know I really did), but the reality for UCSF is you aren't out of the game until the end of September/beginning of October and you still haven't received a secondary. And even then, in the past, there seems to be exceptions to this. Asking on SDN about when people were verified and got their secondary is just going to make you more anxious than you need to be.

For context, I was verified/sent in my app (6/25 - the earliest day possible) and received my secondary on 8/5 (~ 6 weeks after I was verified). Two friends also verified on 6/25 took ~2 weeks and 7 weeks to get a secondary. Another friend verified 7/9 received his secondary 1 week later (so 3 weeks before I did even though I was verified 2 weeks before them).

This means UCSF can get back to you in a week or in two months and there isn't too much correlation between when you are verified. Likely those with perfect stats will be verified faster, while those with lower stats will be viewed more holistically (but I am not an expert, this is just my guess). Taking there time likely means they are looking through your whole application. I know that waiting during this stage is so difficult and stressful, but remember this application doesn't define your worth and that you worked incredibly hard to get here. Be proud of yourself and if you need to talk it out with anyone, I am here.

When I applied before I got UCSF secondary around this time but already had like 4-5 II. Hopefully, things are just going slowly this time around…
Did you have 4-5 IIs with your IA? If so, anyone who told you you were DOA doesn't know what they are talking about! If not, that's an important detail to leave out when comparing cycles.
