2022-2023 Commonwealth (Geisinger)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
have they been sending out holds? Or just IIs and pre-II Rs so far?

I signed up, any word on the dress code?
Nope, but hopefully it's included in the itinerary. If not, I'm wearing a suit.

The thing is, it's also the day Geisinger (historically) starts conferring acceptance offers, so it's possible that we could be notified while on campus grounds.

I actually haven't interviewed yet, I signed up for the tour beforehand in hopes of being better prepared. So I'll be cheering you guys on if that happens!

does anyone know the post-interview acceptance rate here?
Nobody knows, but according to MSAR, at least greater than 12.3%:
Interviewed
928
Matriculated
114

For funsies, let's assume they confer acceptance offers to between twice and thrice the amount matriculated:
Interviewed
928
Accepted
228≤𝓍≤342
Matriculated
114

Now it's between 24.6% and 36.9%, which means absolutely nothing due to it's speculative nature, but what else will I do for the next three weeks‽

EDIT: let's consider in-state versus out-of-state:
Categories
In-state
Out-of-state
Interviewed
451
477
Accepted
160≤𝓍≤240
68≤𝓍≤102
Matriculated
80
34
Post-interview acceptance rate (%)
35.5≤𝓍≤53.2
14.3≤𝓍≤21.4

To those with II, when you signed up, did they have dates available far in advance like in Oct/Nov/Dec? Or did you have a quick turnaround time between II and the dates provided to you? I wonder if they offer interview dates based on desirability. Does anyone know?

I believe Jan were the only dates when I was on there. Guessing they might offer IS or high stat folks earlier dates? I would. This whole process is just unknowable I believe.

Yeah, I agree, I saw in other years that a person got a II in late September and saw dates for October. Yet some people get II at the beginning of Sept and aren't interviewing until Jan. It makes no sense for people to rescind their interview invite if the cycle just started, so I would assume you are right about offering sooner interviews to people they want more.

I'm just double checking that the interview is SOLELY mmi? I watched the video @fxryker posted and she said they do mmi interviews, but I just wanted to make sure that's the only kind. Good luck to everyone applying!

Hey guys did anyone receive a mail to their address that had info about the Abigail scholars program?I just got one today

PPl who did the mmi, how did you guys prep? Anything in the prep that you wish you did differently? I know you signed a form so don't answer if it goes against it! Also, should i be nervous lol

Don’t be nervous. I was not asked any abortion questions or a Why Us or a Tell us about you. It’s more situational and ethical. Think, “You see a chihuahua steal a pizza from Dominos. What do you do?” Or “Describe what empathy/sympathy/whatever means to you and why it’s important for physicians.” Or “You see a doctor hit the nae nae mid operation, what do you do?”
In general, look up abortion laws and consent laws in each state that you have an MMI in.
Here’s a link to get started: Parental Consent & Notification Laws | Teen Abortion Laws

You will be given 8 minutes total: 2 minutes to snack and read a prompt, and 6 minutes to vocalize your answer. I recommend answering the question in 2 to 3 minutes. This will allow the interviewer to ask any follow up questions that they may have.
In general, address the situation, attempt to pull from a previous experience, and answer the question. If given a complex question, like seeing a physician drinking liquor while working, it’s always a good idea to say, “… and I would contact someone above me and see if we can have another physician come in to work as a replacement. Then, I would also address why the physician came into work intoxicated. Is she having personal issues? What can we do to help her out personally?”

It’s always a good idea to at least try to pull from personal experiences, as this will make answering easier and make your answers memorable and stand out.
For instance, “This actually happened to me. My friend’s chihuahua stole thirteen pizzas last week. My friend and I address the chihuahua’s thievery by…” and then you give your answer.
If you cannot think of a personal example, it’s fine to use examples that you saw happen to others.
For instance, “I shadowed Dr. Thiccy and he dealt with a medication error, such as this question states. He called the Psychiatrist and asked why exactly the patient was getting such a high dosage of Depakote. The Psychiatrist became aware of the dosage and lowered it to a quarter. So, to answer your question, I would call the specialist and simply ask why the dosage is such a way. Every moment is a teaching moment. Maybe there’s something that I don’t know yet. By asking, I may learn, or the mistake may be address in a non confrontational manner and be changed accordingly.”

MMIs are nothing to worry about, seriously. They’re actually kind of fun now!

Thiccy out!

Wait, were you allowed to take notes during the 2 min?

We were not allowed to take notes. MMIs will not allow you to take notes, as you may be reading someone else’s thoughts or seem scripted. Reading may seem disingenuous to the interviewer or pose as a distraction to you. It’s best to just think about the prompt and make mental connections to past experiences to draw on.

Weird considering they told us we could take notes

Were you guys asked any "tell me about yourself" or "why GCSOM" type of questions?

Since acceptances will probs come out around Oct 15, do you all think it is only based on September interviews? I wonder if there is a chance early oct people will get to hear back too.

According to @hopetobedoctor101010 on last year's thread, "They say 6-8 weeks but it seems like it's on the 15th of the following month of your interview."

Do we just email updates to them? I don't see any place to upload additional documents or anything.

Hey guys just got an interview invite-complete mid August. Can someone tell me how to schedule for the interview? I went to the portal and clicked on the interview tab but it's only showing sample schedule. No option for me to select anything

does interview date impact acceptance chances? i also received an II today and scheduled it in Feb (as that was the earliest). thanks!

for those that interviewed, what was the format of the MMI? were you faced with actors or you just had to talk out what you would do in a specific situation?

Thiccy did an amazing job on explaining things for you already haha so I'm just adding a few more resources if you haven't known about them yet.

I use the bioethics page of UWash to brush up on some common scenarios. I also use the book "MMI: winning strategies from admissions faculty" by Samir Desai. Someone recommended this book on Reddit and tbh it's amazing! I'd recommend getting the 2022 version since it's more up to date, especially with the COVID related questions!
