2022-2023 Iowa (Carver)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Every school orders the applications differently based on different factors. I would guess stats are a big factor and they prob prioritize IS.

They said 6 weeks is the average but again, it varies by where they place your app in the pile. I’ve heard that some hear within a few weeks and others hear months later. If I recall correctly, they will let you know whether you are A, R, or final pool once they get to yours. So my guess is that they just have not gotten to your app.

I can’t answer the last one for sure, only speculate, but I’m sure they look over your application. Not that it really matters, since the interviews themselves are blinded.
I could be wrong, but I believe they don't send out any post-II R's until March. If you don't hear by January (end of rolling admission), then you've been placed in the final pool and they rereview all of them and send out the remaining A's or R's in early March.

They send out post-ii Rs in January as well (I know from experience last year, lol), but I don't think they send any before then. You will get notified in January if you are in final pool.

so if you get an R and interviewed in the fall, they will drag it out until Jan to tell you?

They told us at my interview if they make any decision on your application they will tell you the same day, so if you haven't heard anything you still have a chance.

Is it an okay assumption to make that a lot of Midwest state schools probably have a lot of waitlist movement because there may be a significant number of people opting for places on either coast or maybe schools that are higher ranked?

This is not an ok assumption. A large amount of applicants only get into one school and on top of that not everyone considers the coasts a place they want to be. Plus carver is ranked very competitively.
If you’re worried specifically about carver you can browse previous threads and they document how far down the waitlist the committee goes each year.

54/150 accepted from the waitlist per: https://students-residents.aamc.org/media/7056/download

Carver is indeed ranked very competitively! Was just trying to see what a person’s chances are of getting in off of the waitlist 🙂.

Anyone else anxiously awaiting tomorrow? Currently at a conference for work and will have to hole up in my hotel room tomorrow afternoon lol
Yes! The nausea has started already. I know I need to relax and that I likely won't hear until the final pool (not super high stats) in March, but still I keep hoping 🤡.

Yeah same. I’m OOS too which doesn’t help the stats thing.

Week 139849348 of maniacally refreshing my email on Tuesdays 🤪 I really don't want to wait till March but its looking like that rip. Good luck yall

They notify you of any decision post-interview within the timeframe they tell you, right? And being placed in the final pool is a decision, so I'd assume they would tell you that right?

They don’t put you into the final pool until January. Last year it was like Jan 25 or something. So basically you only really get acceptances between interview and end of January. Then they make some sort of decision (accept, final pool, reject) that day. Make no decisions between January and March, and then the waitlist/rejection notices come out and then if you’re waitlisted you just have to wait to get called and if you don’t it’s basically a soft R. Hopefully that made sense.

Iowa isn't always consistent with the timeframe and seems like they mostly do high-stat A's before final pool (not many R's or WL's). So it's a waiting game every Tues until Jan to see if you get a decision or put into final pool

Do they ever send post-II rejections from now until the final pool announcement in January?

I think so, but I don’t know how common they are. Ms. Ahearn said it’s possible at my interview but usually it’s January or March for Rs other than pre-II Rs

Yep and honestly their waitlist (for OOS anyway) still has a pretty great chance as long as you’re mostly toward the front.

If you go back to previous threads from last year or the year before they did say they can get behind as they have separate meetings for MSTP students also

And there’s gotta be people who aren’t on SDN too. One of my friends who was accepted back in October isn’t on here. I guess it’s not that common. Maybe more common for people in the waiting game hoping to hear something

If anyone is willing to do some serious deep diving I am very certain there was a cycle that the ADCOM's have been busy on Tuesday's and actually made decisions on Wednesday's before. If anyone is willing to find that post I would sleep well tonight. Haha

Just a few weeks ago they accepted students on the 17th (Tuesday) and the 18th (Wednesday, obviously).

Hi friends, I have an interview coming up here - I was wondering if any of you have tips or advice? I'd also appreciate input on the case-based learning session. Thanks!

Super chill interview (both interviewers are blinded). Case based learning is just a group activity working through a medical case. Just don’t be a robot (don’t dominate the conversation and participate every so often). You’ll do great

Also for case based learning- try to make sure everyone’s voices are heard and considered. They’re big on small group learning

Interview day here is super fun! Depending on what day of the week you are, you'll either have info and tour first and interview second or flip flopped. Mine was info first (all of the informational people were very kind and helpful, willing to answer questions) and then lunch and tour with M2 students. (wear comfortable shoes, or pack them. I changed into flats from my heels because you walk far) and then back for the interviews. I was CBL first and interview second. The CBL portion is honestly super fun. The two M4s were super chill and wanted us to succeed. My group was also super nice - no know-it-alls trying to show off. On that note - don't be that know it all either. All pre-meds are smart and we all want a chance so make sure everyone gets to talk. There's an hour so you'll have plenty of time to speak up and work with the other students. We managed to solve our case within the time frame so that was great. For the interview portion there is a short structured part at the beginning with three questions they have to ask and can't really respond two, and then it switches to a much more casual portion that is chatty. Have fun and good luck!

Thank you so much everyone! What should I bring to the interview? A laptop? Notepad? Thank you again, really appreciate your help!!! <3

I didn’t bring anything. They’ll give you a pen and hand out some paper about financial aid that you can jot notes on. Bring a notepad if you want but not necessary! You’ll be great; there’s a reason they’re interviewing you🙂

anyone else still not hear anything from early october interviews? I think they said they'd get back to us in 6 weeks. but its almost been 7 weeks...
Nothing from late September. However, this is the norm for a lot of applicants. The 6 weeks isn't really a rule unfortunately. The possibilities are: 1) They haven't reviewed your app yet (they aren't ordered chronologically, but by some other metric...) or 2) You have already been put in the final pool. In that case, you'll be notified of this for sure in January.

Hello all! Adding a data point here: I got the A today! I received an email to check my portal at 12:40 pm PST, and the decision was in my portal. Interviewed virtually on 10/26. Hang in there if you haven't heard yet!

Congrats!!!!! I interviewed that same week. If you don’t mind could you share stats?

I would assume MSAR's data is accurate, and maybe the University and others have just not updated it recently. MSAR's data is supposed to be from the most recent class, and I wouldn't be surprised if other institutions/pages hadn't gotten around to updating it that recently.

I’ve noticed that Iowa’s mcat stats seem to vary by source. I’ve seen some say it’s a lower 51X while others say it’s a high 51X. Idk why
The discrepancy is likely because of in-state vs out of state MCAT medians. MSAR says the median MCAT for in-state students is 514, vs OOS students is 519.
