2022-2023 Tulane

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When discussing the population of Tulane, is it more appropriate to say Black community or African American community (or is some other term better?). I'm an international applicant so just want to make sure I'm being as respectful as possible. Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance! 🙂
I’m African American. People often use African American to group all Black people into one category. Please go with Black because it encompasses Afro-Latino/as, Caribbean , African , and other groups in the Black diaspora.

I used Black because that is what my friends use and when I did an informal poll with them, they all thought Black was more appropriate. My friend group includes African American, African, and Caribbean individuals so Black also seemed more inclusive.

Has anyone reached out to the school to explain a specific situation regarding grades?

I am non-traditional (mid-30s) and have extremely poor grades from over a decade ago that have significantly impacted my cumulative GPA. My post-bacc GPA for ~40 hours of BCPM classes is essentially a 4.0 and I'm enrolled in a Master's program with a 4.0. Needless to say, my old grades are not reflective of my ability as much as they are a reflection of a really terrible period in my life that I've since learned and grown from.

Tulane is my #1 choice and I feel compelled to write and explain myself so they won't toss out my app as soon as they see my cGPA, but I'm not sure if that is necessary or if it would be received poorly. This cGPA is the only reason I didn't apply ED to Tulane and I'm really worried it might get me kicked out of their RD screening process if I don't reach out to explain. For me, this app cycle will truly be a test to see if they are honest about the holistic review because I feel like I fit the school perfectly otherwise...I'm just worried about the cGPA :arghh:.

Sorry for the long post. I never post here, so I wanted to provide context and I figured if anyone has insight it would be this group. Thanks in advance!

tl;dr I'm nervous about submitting my secondary without reaching out to the school in advance to explain a low cGPA that's the result of poor performance in numerous classes over a decade ago. I'm curious if anyone else has reached out to explain circumstances like this.
Okay, I never post on this site because many of y’all are quite intense, but I need to let you know that I was in the exact situation you are in. Graduated with a 2.6 a long time ago because I didn’t care about grades, have worked for nearly a decade, then decided to go back to school in the form of a post-bacc. My only difference is I reached out to Tulane immediately when I started my post-bacc to ask about grades.
My GPA is the dreaded sub-3.0 still, even with a 40 credit post-bacc at 3.9, and I received an II. There’s a reason many people in this thread are getting Rs with 3.9 and 518s. Tulane, more than most other schools, doesn’t weigh heavily that kind of stuff. They care about fit and excitement for Tulane/New Orleans. If you have the ECs to back up your fit with Tulane, I believe they will see the value in your application. Tell your unique story, tell it authentically, and don’t worry about an ugly cGPA. When I called my career center to ask about the med school process they told me I would be lucky to spark interest in Caribbean schools, and now I have an II from my top school.

I chuckled @ “quite intense.” Thanks for sharing your journey!

As a fourth-time applicant, and a sixth-time MCAT taker, I definitely agree with you. This year , I received interviews at great schools; schools I never even thought I could get an II.

@ everyone , if you’re genuine and have a real heart for medicine, you will become a dr. I’m wishing everyone the best !

Anyone has any idea regarding Tulane's post-interview acceptance rate for ED applicants? Thanks!!

I don’t think they publish that information but I have heard that post-interview acceptance for ED is high. I believe only 40 applicants for ED were interviewed this year and historically, that’s about how many they admit, give or take.

Late to the discussion, but IS II received on 8/10.
Stats: MCAT 513 (4th retake); cGPA: 3.59; tons of volunteering and working a clinical job; 3rd time re-app to Tulane.
More of a nontraditional applicant now.

Scheduled Interview as soon as I saw the email. I interview 9/7! Wish me luck! Any advice is appreciated.

Timeline for those who are curious.
7/9 - App Complete
7/19 - Submitted CASPER
7/25 - Under Review
8/10 - II Received.

Don’t stress! The interview was really casual and they just want to get to know you. Enjoy the experience and act normal. Good luck to you!

Thanks a lot!!

On hold! Under review 08/02. OOS, LizzyM 72, WARS 74, Casper 3rd quartile.

Does anyone know if they actually move people off the hold list or it's a soft R?

I don’t see many IIs given from this forum but lots of holds. Did they hold everyone lol?

This is not too surprising since they receive 17000+ apps and give about 600 II. Sad though for sure :/

II today OOS from CA. Complete 7/15, under review 8/15. Im kind of in shock. First interview invite this cycle and really didn't expect it to come from this school. my cGPA is a 2.9 and sGPA is a 3.2 (no post bac or SMP). I had a really bad (like really bad) first few years of college but with a decent story to back it up. Dropped out of that school and completely started from scratch with a 3.8 for the past 5 years with community college and then transferring to a four-year university. MCAT 514.

What's your II date? IS student II today too!

Tulane already scheduling interviews in December meanwhile I'm not even under review yet...
If after complete status, the next is under review? What are all the different statuses in order? Please anyone if you could list that would be great. Thank you.
