2022-2023 UCLA (Geffen)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone who interviewed has any tips? Are the interviews conversation-like or are there any questions we should prepare for? TIA

Very conversational for me. Just know what led you to medicine and talk abt how your experiences brought you to that.

Thanks for your response! If you could change one thing abt their interview process what would it be?

I got an interview invite a couple days ago without having even signed up for PREview. My interview is set to be in the end of September. PREview results won't be released until October. Is anyone else in the same boat?
That's weird. I emailed them because I missed the sign up for the September 23rd/24th PREview and they stated that it must be taken by September 30th. Is it only recommended? Or is it just that you can get an interview, and the PREview is used in the final decision?

I'm pretty sure PREview is used in place of MMI

Does anyone know when the September interviewees will hear back? Does DGSOM have rolling admissions?
the first day that MD admissions are allowed to inform applicants who apply regular decision is historically 10/15. But I think 10/15 is a Saturday, so it might be 10/17

Do they also notify about merit scholarship decisions when you get an admissions decision?
I think it depends. for the Geffen scholarship that usually gets sent out later (like March) because they have a separate committee to go over that as well.

FYI according to their website the entering class of 2022 was the last class that could receive the Geffen scholarship. They have rolled out two new scholarships to replace it.

Yeah the first one similar to the Geffen gives out like 10 full rides per year. And then the second gives out 40 full tuition scholarships. So still a pretty good deal especially for out of state students.

For anyone who has interviewed already this cycle, do you have any helpful tips about interview day?

Hi! I'm interviewing tomorrow and am interested in EM. Could I PM you about that specifically?

I am sorry I do not accept any PM 🙁
UCLA is a great place for EM! I just had my UCLA EM interview today (wish me luck!) UCLA is the home institute of UCLA-OV, Harbor-UCLA, and Kern County, 3 separate EM programs. As a UCLA medical student, you can rotate in any of the programs besides VA and Cedar Sinai. You truly see different populations throughout socioeconomic backgrounds!

I was never informed and was not told that the admission committee decides who gets an interview or secondary. Again, our responsibility is to review the COMPLETED application.
No worries! thank you for responding. Does UCLA offer opportunities for early exposure to EM?

YAAAH!!
Okay, so through EMIG (Emergency medicine interest group), there's a google sheet that they send out monthly where you can sign up for shadowing shifts at both UCLA Ronald Reagan and Olive View. I shadowed a lot and loved being in the ED during my MS1. I found a super cool attending and asked him to be my longitudinal preceptor(Monthly one-on-one student to attending clinical exposure mentorship) and kept in touch throughout my time as a medical student. He is now writing me a letter for my residency application!

FYI this is not just EM, we have early exposure like this for all specialties. Attending here is extremely nice, personable, and friendly to medical students. You also get faculty from Harbor and Olive view, which increases the oppertunity pool significantly!
wow that's awesome! This makes me SUPER excited for my interview!

Although you don't take part in the II granting process, can you please shed some light on how it works? Is it formula based? Are LoRs counted at this point etc? In short, what happens after we submit the secondary?

Unfortunately, I believe it's a whole separate committee for the secondary and interview invitation. I would love to offer, but I do not have any insight on the determining factors for secondary and interview. Therefore, although I would love to shed any light, I do not have any wisdom to share on if LOR is even and to what degree a determining factor is for secondary or interviews. However, I believe all applicants are indeed reviewed, and no application is ignored or placed on the shelf to collect dust.
Any chance you cn ask someone who knows on all our behalf? I am sure everyone is interested in that.

i have a quick question about the decision process. i know UCLA puts a big emphasis on holistic review but i'm still feeling a bit nervous about upcoming interview since i'm on the lower end of stats. could you give any insight on how much weight is put on stats vs interviews/preview scores in the final decision? thank you for doing this!

has anyone who applied to prime or the global health track received an II?
I was wondering this too - I was like maybe this is why it is taking a little longer! aka staying hopeful lol. if we dont get into the global health, we still are considered for normal MD? or did we shoot ourselves in the foot? I am now freaking out about this

Pretty sure we are still considered for normal MD!

Is it a bad sign for an II if I got a secondary early (mid July) and only 2 weeks after my primary was sent out but still no II? At what point should I consider UCLA as not possible this season? Or is it too early to tell?

I got a secondary two hours after my primary was sent and still haven't heard anything. Definitely too early

Did you ever end up getting a secondary? Also applied last year and got one and still haven’t this year 1 month after acknowledgment of primary
sorry for the late response, had to get off SDN for a while. I did end up getting a secondary in July

Yup, I was in the same boat. I got an interview invite on 8/23 and I just took my preview exam last week!

Submitted secondary Aug 4, anyone else who submitted around then hear back about an II?
