2022-2023 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

Introduction and Methodology
I've been neurotically digging through past threads to figure out when the next round of prematches will be in a bid to soothe my soul with certainty. Sharing my work here so it's not 100% useless.
(Disclaimer: I don't know how to count, so 𝛿days = ±1 day)

Results
Last cycle (EY 2022), per SDN's sample, UTSW released pre-matches on:

- Oct 15th (Friday), and then after 10±1 business days,
- Nov 1st (Monday), and then after 14±1 business days,
- Nov 19th (Friday), and then (assuming a 3-day break for Thanksgiving) after 13±1 business days,
- Dec 13th (Monday), and then (assuming admissions is off-duty between Dec 24th and Jan 1st) after 21±1 business days,
- Jan 19th (Wednesday).

Supplemental Data. In the anomalous pandemic year of EY 2021, per SDN's sample, UTSW released pre-matches on Oct 16th (Friday), Nov 11th (Wednesday), and Dec 17th (Thursday). Relying on this less because of its more anomalous nature.

Discussion
We have 2 Wednesdays on which UTSW has released prematches (Supplemental Data), and we have an average of ~12±1 business days between the first few prematches of EY 2022, so Wednesday Nov 2nd is a possibility (12±1 business days away from Oct 17th).

Yet, we also have an alternating Fri/Mon/Fri/Mon pattern in EY 2022 spanning Prematch Dates #1-4. So, this year, given that prematch batch #1 was on Monday Oct 17th 2022, one could guess that the next batch of prematches may come out on Friday Nov 4th (14±1 business days away from Oct 17th).

Yet yet, our most recent data point about the space between Prematch Date #1 and Prematch Date #2 is 10±1 business days away from Oct 17th. So Monday Oct 31st is also a possibility (10±1 business days away from Oct 17th).

Yet yet ✨yet✨, our most recent data point of the date of Prematch Date #2 is Tuesday November 1st, so that's also a possibility (11±1 business days away from Oct 17th).

TL;DR—predicting the actions of an admissions committee is a futile effort. They've already swayed from last year's precedent re: # of interview invitation dates. I wasted an hour of my life trying to do actuarial science without data and I'm trying to cope with that. Back to making renaissance-style AI art! 😊
looks like I have competition 🤠

Thanks! Looking at last years thread a lot of people reported full rides or partial scholarships upon prematch so I assumed the earlier reports were merit, but wanted to check 🙂

I wonder if the state of the economy affects how many scholarships go out each year

In the grand scheme of the expenses, student scholarships is a miniscule amount of money. They could for all practical purposes make the tuition free for everyone and not miss a beat since it is about 5 million and the school's budget is probably a billion.

welp, this just fueled my desire to get involved in policy making. MD/MPH here I come.

If I didn’t get a merit scholarship with prematch does that mean I probably won’t ever get one?

You will get merit scholarship with your admission decision.

The only way you would get a scholarship otherwise is if you argue with the finanical package from another medical school. However, UTSW is not required to match any offers from other schools.

You could get money when you file a FAFSA and apply for financial aid but that may not count as merit money..

Any idea on what percentage of interviews have been extended for this cycle? I have taken a couple gap years in research at UTSW so I'm hopeful to stay here, but haven't had any action this cycle from them.

Texas schools are usually done sending the majority of their interviews by the end of October, from what I hear.

Is UTSW true P/F with no internal rankings during Y1/Y2?
First semester if P/F with no rankings.

Second and third semeseter they do have different levels of grading (honors, high pass etc). You start rotations after 3rd semester (January of the third year of the start of med school - in this batch - January of 2025) and the grades for each rotation will be done differently.

whenever they announce IIs, you need to ask which dates they have received.

The interviews last through January. It only depends on when have filled all the dates and the only way to know that is to ask people here what dates they are being given when they are being invited.

I thought this was how McGovern did things? Just curious since during interview day and after speaking to other students I was under the impression that the entirety of preclinical was P/F.

You are right about UTSW. It may have changed a bit.

Can any M2s provide additional input on grading? I am under the impression people are given actual grades starting in second semester even if they don't count.

Our entire pre-clerkship is P/F.

The first semester is P/F and does not count for AOA. Our integrated medicine blocks (second/third semester) are also reported on the transcript as P/F. However, the cumulative average of your IM block grades count for AOA. I believe you are awarded maximum AOA points for IM blocks if you average a 94 or something.

What's a passing grade? A 70?

Does AOA cause a lot of stress for most of your classmates? Or is it relatively unimportant?

this cycle has gone so well for me and I couldn’t be more grateful, but still holding out hope for a UTSW II. It’s almost poetic that the only TX school I haven’t interviewed at is my #1 choice. Maybe they’re saving the best for last? :’)

Why pine after the one that shows no interest?

I admit I am also tweaking slightly with everyone who has not received a pre-match! I got a II early in the cycle and interviewed in October due to no slots. Waiting to hear back and focusing on being as non-neurotic as possible. I have worked at UTSW for a few years now, and I would definitely love to stay in the area to maintain my connections and remain with my friends. Fingers crossed to everyone who is pining for this school!

Congrats. What do you attribute your success in this cycle to?

@WAMCthrowaway seems to do interviews well since they got several prematches. If they could get that last LOCAL interview..

Crossing fingers for next round of pre-matches soon. I know I'm going to be tweaking from today until match day about this school.

LM 73 isn’t super high, but enough that it gets me “in the door” for an interview at all texas schools.

I did not see the LORs, but I had them written by doctors, professors, etc. whom I shared a strong relationship with. I still keep in contact with them. Presumably, they wrote me very strong letters.

Essays: I had some traumatic events that defined me and my pursuit of medicine and I refined my essays several times to demonstrate that. Most all interviewers have asked me about them and noted “resilience” as a strong characteristic. I had very strong writers who aren’t in medicine review the essays for good grammar, syntax, flow, etc. I think the essays are extremely important. In reviewing some of my friends essays who haven’t done well this cycle, their essays very clearly stand out as sub-par.

Clinical: shadow and scribed for a while

The remaining factors like volunteering and research are minimally important from what Ive seen in interviews. I did not have much experience in those categories, but when asked about them, I knew how to make do with what Ive done, which leads to the last thing:

Interviewing skills: i prepared A LOT for the first interview. After doing so well in the interview, I felt as if I worried for nothing. From that point on I did no preparation for interviews (except MMI). Interview skills can be practiced, but I’ve always felt that my interviewing was strong to begin with. At the end if the of the day, I’m extremely grateful for all of the interview opportunities

I'm still in pre-clerkship, so I can't really say for sure. Pre-clerkship grades count a lot less for AOA than our clerkship rotations, so if students were to get stressed about their grades, it'll probably be then.

What has been your experience with actual inclusion efforts, specifically those that are part of the curriculum/school rather than student run?

One if my interviewers here referred to my race (Asian) in a rude way. I’m hoping this was just a particular person having a bad day and not representative of the school…?

This sounds like something worth reporting to the admissions office so they can remove that person as an interviewer. That's highly inappropriate.

UTSW needs to stop sending gifts if there’s no II. I’ve emailed admissions asking about the flashlight and now I’ll email them again asking about the charger they sent via post.
