It's super odd. Wondering if you'll get an II with some form of brief contact. It's almost like they think you've already interviewed and they want to remind you to stay interested. Maybe they need to know you'll gladly take an II.

If I am not mistaken, so far only UTSW seems to be limiting to admitted students. Does anyone know other schools which are not giving tours to interviewed students if they have a tour policy?
 
Anyone know when UTSW stops interviewing? Do they invite for interview a month in advance or on a different (shorter/longer) timeline? TIA!!

In the post-interview feedback survey, UTSW asked interviewees to "Please select the interview weekend you attended"—the remaining interview weekends are Nov 5, Dec 3, Dec 10, and Jan 7.

The earliest available interview scheduling date on the Sep 13th II batch was Oct 15th, so it stands to reason that they II ~1 month in advance. And it seems they may be due for an II release soon.

I’ve been gathering info on this school since there seems to be so much conflicting information on the student culture all over the net. I’ll be talking to a bunch of current students from MS1-4 to try and get a general idea of what it’s like and post my findings here for all you wonderful people.

In the meantime, here’s a really positive review of the school from an MS4 in the 2020 thread:


“Hi! I am a current MS4. I have LOVED my experience at UT Southwestern! It really has been everything I was hoping it would be. I've made great friendships and I really have grown so much. It's definitely a challenging school but that's the kind of environment that helps me thrive, and the P/F preclinical really helps take the stress off. I also have found it to be nurturing despite the size -- our deans are crazy responsive to emails and our class GroupMe/FB group/etc are always full of my classmates trying to help each other out. The school has a great reputation and even now at just the beginning of interview season, I've met so many alumni or people familiar with the school that are impressed with our training and opportunities. Even interviewing at lots of OOS programs, almost every one so far has happened to have a UTSW alum among the program leadership! We have residency programs in everything and they are across the board all very strong so that has been really helpful. I have pretty niche interests and I have had access to lots of mentors who are eager to take students under their wings.

I obviously didn't go here before the changes made, but from talking to alumni it seems like it lived up much more to the "malignant" reputation then than it does now. I haven't experienced any other schools, but from talking to friends at other schools we seem pretty much on par. Every school is going to have their share of gunners, especially in such a big school. Most people tend to make a small group of friends and there are lots of opportunities to meet them, particularly the colleges system (though half my friend group are in different colleges than mine!)”

Thank you so much! Fingers crossed for that next II round. Already interviewed at my #2 school so this would be a dream!

Hi! Thanks for getting on here.

I think everyone’s biggest concern is culture. Could you describe your experience? Do you have time to devote to hobbies outside of studying?

More specifically a question I want answered - are there a decent number of nontrads in your class? Do you know of anyone with kids?

Culture has been great so far. Everyone is really helpful and works together. There are always memes and Anki cards floating around in our groupme from classmates. We are only in our first semester though so I can only speak from my limited experience. For me personally the first two months or so were a difficult adjustment but it's been better since getting used to it all. There's been time for hobbies for sure. Especially after the initial adjustment period. Med school is still med school though, so you have to take the time as you get it. I've been able to spend plenty of time with my partner in between all the studying. There are periods of time that are hectic with an upcoming test followed by periods of time with relatively less stress. It's all pretty cyclic.

Quite a few nontrads in our class from various prior careers. Some with children as well including young children. I can't speak to how they manage that, not being a parent myself, but I know they do fine.

Thanks for being willing to share! I have two questions,

Firstly; how do you think your workload/stress levels compare to any friends you may have at other medical schools.

Secondly: Do you know if preclinical performance has a strong impact on AOA? Is it something your classmates think about a lot?

1. I haven't really talked to some of my friends at other schools about it yet. All medical schools are a lot of work though. Upperclassmen here have told me that our curriculum is very front loaded relative to other schools, so our first semester is very intense and it gets better from there. I'm still in my first semester so I can't speak to our curriculum beyond that. I know based off grade distributions that very few people fail our final exams/classes (low single digits usually) so if you get accepted you are certainly capable of doing well here. The remediation policy is also very generous, especially in the first semester. I have never got the idea that anyone faculty/staff here wants any student to do anything but well in their classes.

2. Our first semester has absolutely zero impact on AOA. Beyond that preclinical grades are a very small percent of the AOA determination. I haven't heard of anyone really talk about it yet. I'm sure there will be some people going for surgical specialties and other competitive specialties that will care a lot about that stuff but I'm certainly not one of them.
