2022-2023 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

what does happen if a school over-admits for their class? From speaking to other applicants it seems like a lot of BCM interviewees are planning on ranking UTSW higher due to the temple situation.

I’m sure they’ve accounted for this, but let’s say they have 20 extra students. Do they ask people to defer?

The only experience I’ve had with this is in the UK where schools would offer students money to take an extra year before matriculating

Just because a lot of people rank a school #1 doesn't mean the class will be overfilled. The Match algorithm takes care of that.
Overfilling I believe results from over-exuberance in pre-match offers, as those are offers that a school can't "take back".
UTSW did over-offer somewhat last year, so I am sure they will be more cautious with prematch offers this time.

I've heard legends where they ask you to defer and some schools give you one year of med school for free since you defered. Not sure how it works here.
Yes when a different TMDSAS school overfilled a couple years ago they did offer deferrals to the next year but no big financial incentive at all 🙁
Students were also allowed to choose starting the year they matched for, but knew there would be some overcrowding.

Is there a strategy for match ranking? Like if I rank UTSW above other schools that I have a better chance of getting accepted would I be setting myself up to not match anywhere?

The recommended strategy is to vote your true wishes. If UTSW doesn't have you ranked high enough on their rank list, the Match algorithm will move you along to your # 2,3, etc. Don't second guess yourself.

Adding to @wysdoc's posts:

A&M over admitted by 50+ students in 2021. They sent everyone letters asking to defer and they would give like 4 or 5k to do a gap year masters. I personally know 4 students from that class and none of them accepted. Some did and I met someone who was trying to get into EnMed during the gap year but did not do the masters. It costs a lot more than 4 or 5k that was offered to take the gap year. In the end A&M enrolled 25-30 more students than the expected class size and since then they started having plans to make the entire class bigger in size going forward. However, I do believe they interviewed fewer people last year (that is my belief but I couldnt get any collaborating data) since they already had 20+ left over from 2021.

UTSW class size is 20 people more for 2022, most likely because they didnt take into account the change that could happened with Baylor joining TMDSAS and having most of their spots filled by match time (they traditionally lost many match students late April/early May due to Baylor being on AMCAS and many students kept both admissions until May 1st deadline). As @wysdoc mentions they would be more careful prematching students this year but now they have to watch out for disproportionate level of risk averse students not willing to end up in the new Baylor campus.

@MCAThiccy there was a time when Stanford suddenly shot up in rankings from 6 or 7 to 2 and ended up having 120 instead of 80. They did offer an year of something but not as generous as you are expecting. I have seen Princeton (not our favorite medical school but undergrad) offer a year of funded service to get them to defer when they overadmitted.

Yep. You can stay on your favorite school's waitlist even if you dont match, at least until May 15th (you lose all waitlists in Texas if you have an admission in Texas and IS).

UTSW gave the first 4 or 5 nobel laureates millions in grants to set up their labs to bring them over!

Also just found a scholarship where the VA will pay for all of med school! Downside is you have to work for them for 6 years after residency.

If you get admitted to school charging 60k tuition, it is worth accepting work binding scholarships.

Do we anticipate one more round of IIs from UTSW? Or historically have they sent any in December as well?

My friend got an interview in like late december/early january last year (I can't remember exactly when but it was like after Christmas for sure).

Is the 2nd prematch wave supposed to come today? It's been 1 month since the last one right? Hopefully this afternoon???!

Hope it's sometime this week. Does UTSW have a history of releasing prematch on friday or something?

Is anyone considering the MD/MBA program? Is the tuition for the MBA separate from the MD tuition? (And if so, does it follow the estimates on UTD's website?)

I believe last year it was a Monday/Friday alternating pattern ~every two weeks with one final one on a Wednesday. The year before (pandemic) there were 3 reported with a Friday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Post #452 in this thread has the data on it.

I thought I was only sent reminders for the ones I put in my name and email for. But I might be wrong.
Yeah, I’m not sure! Now worried I might’ve RSVP-ed and forgot about it (which probably looks bad). Can anyone else confirm whether they’re getting only the stuff they signed up for?

I haven’t RSVPd to anything and I’ve been getting them all

Tbh it’s probably not as deep as I’m making it out to be. 😅
