2022-2023 UT Tyler

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I’m an East Texas applicant. Was born and raised here my whole life.

UT Tyler is also a pretty big school, I imagine there’s a decent amount of premeds there. Wouldn’t be surprised if they have 200-300 premeds applying this year.
definitely not as many as you think lol- our premed org (amsa) has like 80 members and the pre-health association has 110. I know not all premeds are involved but I'd say 200-300 premeds in the school TOTAL.

There are only 60 seats though?

I see that you have 61.2 LM score. 492 and 3.0 translate to 51. So they don't have to to dig deep to find reasonable stats candidates with roots.

Our (utt) premed advisors said that they typically have 80-120 TMDSAS letter packets sent out but that includes dental and vet.
Yeah that makes more sense, it would be more correct to say they have that total premeds rather than applicants. I only based the numbers off my own undergrad with a similar size (smaller actually than UT Tyler). I guess the point I was trying to make is there are plenty of students at ut tyler to fill the class.

Do you go to UT Tyler? That looks like a large selection pool internal to the school!
I personally don’t, it was just a guesstimate, but I probably exaggerated it. Still, the point is there are plenty of premed students at UT Tyler that could fill the class if they so chose do to do with only students from East texas.

Also I believe UT Tyler’s inaugural class will be 40 students and not 60.

Yes it will start with 40

But there are also people like you who fit the roots part of the mission who would be applying.

totally agree, I have a feeling most of the class will have ETX linkages and many from UTT. UTT, however, does have a lot of JAMP, and JAMP won't send to UTT this year.

I personally only know about 12 people applying from my orgs but I'm sure there are more.

Good luck.

I see JAMP has a 3.25 GPA and 502 with a minimum of 124 (496) in each section as requirements translating to 58.5.

So if UTT has JAMP candidates, they have to apply outside of the program (is that allowed) to stay back if UTT is not part of JAMP.

it's not allowed! so they can't apply.

On the secondary application, my Casper results say delivered, but my DUET score has not been received. Is anyone else having this issue?

I don't see the section to submit secondary. That's weird. Can anyone show me?

Did you fill out the pre-requisite course section already ? The tab for the secondary essays submission doesn't appear until you've finished that (or at least that's how it was in my case).

I think I did but let me check it : O

Did you fill in the paper thing to add Tyler to your medical schools? Like on your TMDSAS application, is Tyler a part of your medical schools?
heads up, I filled out the paper thing and it wasn't adding to my school list. So I straight up just used the TMDSAS contact tool and told them, and they transmitted it within a day, and I had the secondary the day after that. Hope this helps!

for this question-"Describe any experiences or information you have in or about East Texas as it relates to our mission statement"--where are yall finding information on east texas? I have no experiences and I'm struggling to find out where to look for health information

Have you watched this video with an interview with the dean? He talks about the region in the first part. Don't quote him back to himself in your essay though! #79

Thanks! Upon watching that video, it looks like they reaaally want people with a connection to east texas. I have never even been to the area and know very little about it...is it even worth applying? this secondary is very high effort so I want to make sure its worth it lol

I’ve never been to East Texas in my life but I still applied. I have a pretty primary-care focused app though.

I decided to shoot my shot because I felt I aligned with their mission otherwise, but I’d fully understand if I don’t hear back. It’s hard to know how strong their preference is given the lack of previous classes.

The dean said they expect to have students from all over. They also talk about how you don’t need to necessarily be from East Texas to align with their mission. Just show an effort you learned about the community and have your app shows that you wish to practice primary care and/or in a rural setting and that will make them take a hard look at your app. Just my two cents!

Has anyone successfully contacted admissions to ask a question? If so, did you call or email?

I emailed them a few times through out the cycle and they get back pretty fast like takes them at most like a day or two.

I am using AP credits to fulfill one of my prerequisites. I checked the Future Registration box for that prerequisite and gave them the information they wanted. Should I also select the "I elect to have my premedical education coursework evaluated by the committee." option instead of "I have met the premedical coursework requirements." option in the Premedical Course Verification page?

Depends on if it's something like English vs Biology imo

TMDSAS got my business statistics class to meet the stat requirement. Will that be enough or should I still take another stat class?

This link provides what is already approved by tmdsas by University to meet specific class requirements, i.e., a course offered by a different department but still valid for biology, chemistry, physics, statistics etc.

Is it possible that they screen applicants post-secondary for CASPER quartiles? Wasn’t so sure how they use CASPER even after listening to their session

Does anyone know when they will start sending interview invites?

I completed Duet last month but it's still showing as scores not received in the portal. Submitted 2' just now but still having the issue. Planning to email Monday if it hasn’t been updated by then. Anyone have a similar experience?

I’m prewriting just in case and waiting for my app to be verified, but how awful would it be if I’m not close to 500 words for the essays? I always hear that you shouldn’t be too flowery and if you can say it with fewer words, the better. Is there a minimum number of words we should enter? Thanks for the help!
