2023-2024 UTMB (Sealy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For OOS interviewees, how long does it usually take to hear back on a decision? I interviewed a couple days ago and am hoping for a nice Christmas gift from UTMB😁

Not to ask for your sources, but did this come from another student or faculty which are adjacent to JSSOM? Just curious.

One of the admissions staff briefly mentioned this to me during a fair hosted by my school. They were really vague and it sounded like an idea just barely getting started and years off from even thinking about implementing.

Edit: I also don't know if they were actually serious when they said this.

I think UTMB also weighs strong ties. Their secondary has a question that I think is meant for individuals with strong ties to the school and the region. But I am not sure about this.
I dont think so, I have no ties and received an interview fairly early

Yeah, I don’t think they view ties super heavily in the whole process, but I think they give applicants the space to provide info about ties if they have them.

I, and a ton of other high stat people got interview invites from UTMB very early in the cycle. Not sure if they yield protect using stats.
I am aware of people who have >80 LM with no interviews from either.

You shouldnt have to look at it as yield protection but more like giving opportunity to others in Texas.

We do not evaluate your surroundings unless it's a huge red flag (like, idk, taking your interview while riding the subway or something, or your girlfriend is hovering in the background the entire time, or you're wearing a casual t-shirt).

As an interviewer, it feels really dry on our end too! I would love to have more time to converse but once we get through the MMI station there's like 30 seconds left So I wouldn't worry too much about how conversational it seemed and focus on answering the MMI prompt well, since that's how we're evaluating you!

Is it mandatory to wear a blazer?

Anecdotally I can tell you that you will see almost all of your fellow interviewees wearing jackets, so yes, you will probably want to wear a jacket. The ask in the interview invite email is to "dress professionally as if you were interviewing in person". Medical school interviews are generally considered to be in business professional attire. This is not a bad guide:

Thanks! Unfortunately I didn’t have a blazer at the time of my interview so I just wore a solid colored formal blouse. I hope that was okay, it looked professional to me but now I’m paranoid that I’ll lose points for not having the blazer

No point revisiting what already happened and whether someone is monitoring what you are wearing. It is best to look like you are wearing a suit at interviews and I am not certain all women's suits include a blazer look. Zoom pictures are so small that people really have to pay attention to what you are wearing.

You’re right, it’s done now so no point to dwell. I guess for future interviews I know to be better prepared

Not mandatory. Most folks do as it looks professional. We just want to see that you're taking this seriously and dressing appropriately for the situation.

As a N=1 I wore a floral dress to my interview with no jacket 😀

Ahhh I love that for you!! Makes me feel SO much better - thanks for the reassurance 🙂

thats how she got an almost full ride.

wow congrats thats a crazy II list and we barely started november
I think November is closer towards end of the cycle for Texas and definitely past the mid way point for most AMCAS schools as well

2 of the TMDSAS schools usually make their last invitations in November (UTSW AND UTMB) but the rest of them continue on.
Interview dates themselves will have to be wrapped up at the end of January 2024 because the deadline to rank schools is February 2, 2024.

Does anyone know when they’re doing the townhalls/tours? They said some people would get email invites (randomly) but not sure if this has already started

This is an appeal to applicants who have taken Casper for admission to University of Texas Medical Branch SOM.

Complete the 2023 Situational Judgment Test Experience survey.

HPSA/SDN has the 2023 SJT Experience Survey available to anyone preparing for SJTs (especially Casper and PREview). If you completed the 2022 survey, you are welcome to go ahead and complete the survey again. This survey consists of multiple pages and will take up to 10 minutes. You can also place yourself on a waitlist for a study focusing more on school-run SJTs run through platforms like Kira Talent, to be released later in the year.

Your feedback matters!
We learned a lot about how applicants prepared for Casper and PREview last year, but the number of PREview schools has almost doubled this cycle! Over 20% of all AMCAS applicants will likely have taken PREview, and up to 90% of all medical school applicants will likely have taken Casper this cycle (according to Acuity Insights). This does not include applicants in non-medical professions who have had to take these assessments for admission to physician assistant, anesthesiology assistant, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, or physical therapy programs, where we see a trend that applicants with higher Casper results are preferred. Medical residency applicants are also being asked to complete Acuity Insights Assessments, and very little is known about how program directors use these data. Your responses are vital to get objective insights on how admissions committees value the results of these exams.

Your feedback matters!
We want to hear from as many people as possible, especially those attending or applying outside of medicine (MD/DO). This year saw an expansion of SJTs in admissions, and more information has been made available on preparing for these assessments. We want to stay current with these trends to guide future applicants and students facing these SJTs.

Many of our findings from the 2022 survey align with the NAAHP Testing Task Force report released last summer. This includes concerns about proctoring, consistency of scoring, and concern that applicants are paying for validity research. But we need more student voices to gain a louder voice to advocate for future health professional school applicants.

Your feedback has helped HPSA develop a workshop focused on preparing for SJTs like Casper and PREview. This workshop is part of our Becoming a Student Doctor preparation course, and we have already had some positive results among those who have participated in our mock interview workshops. An updated workshop will be presented at the UC Davis Prehealth Conference on October 14, and we welcome opportunities to present the full-length SJT workshop to your campus!

Fill out this survey and help future applicants become physicians in their chosen profession!

Arent they doing only admitted students? If so they haven't admitted anyone.

Not sure if anyone needed a confirmation but Dec 14th will be our last interview day this year.
Out of curiosity, do you know if they will be holding pre-matches until after all interviews have concluded? That is kinda the vibe I got from the verbiage of the email they sent out regarding being equitable to those who had later interview dates.

They said December

Does anyone know if TMDSAS schools can see what other schools you’ve interviewed/pre-matched at and how you’ve ranked them?

They can see what other schools have also extended you an invite (cannot see whether you've completed the interview or where you are at in the process). They cannot see your rankings.

Pre-matches will not go out until December. I don't know specifically if that means after December 14th, but I would assume so.

No school can see where you ranked them
They can see where else you have interviewed- IF they are inviting you too
They can see where you have acceptances

Does utmb take pre-II updates? And if so, would a poster presentation at an international conference be worth one?

Ya if I remember correctly people pre matched last year who didn’t receive an invite to tour

For anyone who may have been to a preview day in the past, nice jeans and hoodie okay to wear?

Signed up for the 12/15 preview day!

They said during orientation that tour invites will be sent randomly to pool of applicants who have interviewed
Do you think that attending will affect our chances of getting in ? Trying to figure out if it’s worth it to make the 4 hour drive.

It’s for your benefit if you aren’t familiar with Galveston. It won’t add to your chances of getting in.

Personally, I decided to attend because I want to find out more about the school and Galveston is relatively close to me, so getting there would not be too difficult.

I don’t think attendance will impact decisions because the invites to preview day were sent randomly, meaning not everyone has the equal opportunity to attend… but someone correct me if im wrong here 🙂

You’re probably correct. I was just curious 🙂

December 14th is the last day of scheduled interviews 🥳

(It’s also the day I will lose all my savings towards putting a deposit to a private DO school OOS 🤣)
WOW. UTMB has no interviews scheduled in January?

That means they have the entire pool to be prematched at once?

Either at once in December or in waves through Dec and Jan… I guess we shall find out!

Well but they are done with interviews before Christmas?

Yup last interview date is Dec 14 but it’s kinda crazy that they’d send out 300 prematches on a single day between the 14th and 25th so I thought they might do it in waves over a few days/month? Idk I guess we wait and watch
