Congrats lawyerdoc2b and ShinyDome19 on your acceptances/interviews. I might apply next year to WC. My stats are not too good 3.1+ cGPA, 3.4+ sGPA and 27P MCAT, my ECs are weak and I wont have no time to polish it as I work full time and take full load of classes. However, I have a lot healthcare experiences. Anyway, thanks for sharing your stats. Good luck...

Hello to all! I just got back from my interview at WCU. I had a very pleasant visit! I promise I will fill you guys in on how the day progressed in the morning, but I have to step out for the rest of the evening (taking the wife to dinner). I'll just say that every part of the process was enjoyable (except the weather)! Oh, and I was accepted today as well!!!!! I will give a full detailed report in the morning :).

WCU-COM Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WCU-COM Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! Accepted the day of your interview. Congrats. No worries about waiting for that acceptance call.

The interview went well. I met four other prospective students.

I was accepted as well.

When we arrived we filled out a short form with our names and a contact number. Turns out the Dean, Dr. Murphy makes a phone call the day of the interview. WCU gets an A plus for efficiency in this regard. :)

It was good to hear that others with whom I shared this experience have been accepted as well.

Just for Grace who wants to know how the building is coming along, we only saw it from afar. It was raining; a regular monsoon, so going to the construction site was not a good idea. The walls are up and the roofs are on the two buildings. I am sure that they will be done by June or July judging from the pace of construction and my obeservations.

I will post some interview feedback. In a nutsehell, my impressions is still very positive. WCU will be a great medical school. For you OOS applicants, 2 of the 5 interviewed were from out-of-state (me from Florida and another applicant lives in Alabama. The other 3 were from Mississippi)

The interview style was friendly, no pressure (if there is such a thing) and open file by a D.O., a Ph.D. and the Assoc. Dean for Admissions. They all were very aware of and familiar with the application file.

Dean Murphy presented before the interviews on the school's progress and mission. We also received a presentation on financial aid and other topics of interest to an applicant.

OK:

First a few tips....
1) when you arrive on campus, report to the guard stand and they will give you a day parking pass. (you can't miss it).
2) give yourself some extra time because the parking is limited.
3) when you get to green science, enter the right set of doors.
4) green science is next t the library if you need some quiet time to look over anything.
5) there are several places to eat, hotels, shopping, etc. within 3-4 miles.

Interview time.....
1) they interviewed 5 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon.
2) expect to be there around 4hrs.
3) the five in my group were escorted from green science to the library where the interviews took place (they had some of the study rooms set up with refreshments, a lounge area for us, and one as an interview room).
4) we were greeted by the three faculty that would interview us (Dean Murphy, Dr. Martin, and Dr. Weir) and Emily (if you do not know her by now, you need to get acquainted!!! her and Ms. Sandra have been working their tails off to answer any questions and make sure things happen in a timely manner!! Thanks ladies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
5) we were then given a brief introduction to the mission of the school, some details about various staff, construction progress and layout, and some details about financial aid. This information was given by Dr. Murphy and Dr. Weir.
6) we did not tour the current construction sites as it was raining and cold! from what i could tell, things are coming along nicely.
7) we were then taken into the interview room one at a time for a 3 panel interview lasting around 30 min.(I think the three will be different for everyone). The rest of us got to socialize. (My group of 5 was great! I really enjoyed our visit!)
8) the interview itself was low stress. The question were all very reasonable and relevant to medicine. Just make sure you go over your app well, be ready to discuss it and why you feel medicine/WCU are a good fit for you. If you can do these things, you should do fine.

Now for my good news......
-I live about 2hours drive from the school. I was about half way home when Emily called and said Dr. Murphy would like to speak with me if I had time. (I had time!!!) Once I reached Dr. Murphy, he informed me of my acceptance! We had a very encouraging talk about how interviews went. He certainly made me feel wanted and cared for by the school. This personal touch was very nice!

If anyone has any questions i'll do my best to answer them...or there will be others tht may be able to help.

Hey lawyerdoc2b...Congrats man!!!! I guess we were writing our feedback at the same time. Hope to see you in AUG.!

Am I correct to assume that your spouses were with you during this time, except for the interview?

Actually my wife was working....i was solo. If your spouse is going to attend, they will make sure that they are taken care of though.

Congrats DKR and Lawyer! That is really good news, and so fast. Lets hope the news stays so sweet for the interviews Next Tuesday :) :xf:

I actually interviewed yesterday too. It was a great experience; very laid back and I really like the staff. Sounds like it's going to be a great school.
The interview itself was not terrible. Open-file, be prepared to answer questions about your grades, MCAT, extracurriculars and work experiences. Also the ever-present "Why DO?" and "Why William Carey?" questions too...make sure you come prepared with answers to those. They also asked me a couple questions like "What would you do if you failed your first block of exams?" and an ethical question about what I would do if a classmate offered me a stolen test. Nothing too terrible, and I was in and out in about 30 minutes.

Oh, and Dr. Murphy also called me later that afternoon to let me know I was also accepted. :) Very quick turnaround!

To those of you applying: don't hesitate to call and speak with Dr. Murphy. I went and visited with him before I was offered an interview and I definitely think it helped my chances of being offered one. He's very friendly and approachable and he seems to enjoy answering students' questions. Good luck!

This is all so exciting!! I wonder if they'll be getting responses to everyone that quickly!

I am also an OOSer, but I'm more removed from the region much more so, as I am from southern IN. I hope they start to send out interview invites soon to those outside the region. I'm really interested in attending a new school!

Oh hey, here's another question for you...when do you all have to accept or decline the seat? I know they have 100 to offer, so I wonder if they'll be handing them out pretty generously at the beginning knowing that people probably have multiple offers already?

We will have 30 days.
Thanks...30 days to come up with $3,000?! Or 30 days to just accept in writing? My bp is instantly rising at the thought of having to come up with that kind of money anytime soon.... :scared:

Im pretty sure that they want the money. You know the old saying...money talks ;).

Hello Everyone, I have enjoyed reading all your post. I have a question for those of you who had interviews this week; what was the ratio of male/female at your interviews?

Thank you.. were you and Lawyerdoc2b in the same group?

AgDoc84.. I see you are from Jackson and you interview on the 8th is your interview at 1 pm?

All three of the guys were accepted who interviewed on the 1st, do you know if the girls were accepted? Congratulations, I know you are excited, where did you do you undergrad and masters?

I think it's actually going to be 108 seats, and the 30 days is to accept the seat including the payment of the $3000 deposit.

My spouse visited the town last August and liked it. She did not accompany me on interview day. One applicant brought her husband along and he was well cared for while the five of us went through the process.

Spouses will not interview of course but are made to feel welcome. The WCU COM folks had it together. It was completely pleasant.

Thank you.. were you and Lawyerdoc2b in the same group?

Yes, dkrt3 and I were in the same group. 3 males - 2 females at the 1 p.m. interview session. I believe that an additional 5 folks interviewed in the morning.

Hi lawyerdoc2b, hokiedocMS and dkrt3! I was also accepted. Yippee!!!

I did bring my husband and he felt very welcomed by the staff and administration. They knew me by name as soon as I walked into the admissions office.

Ya'll, it just doesn't get any better than WCU-COM!!!

Thanks Lawyerdoc2b -congratulations on being accepted. I read in one of your previous post you had been accepted at another school, so now you have to decide which you prefer. To have a choice, is wonderful, most are just praying for an opportunity at one school.

I actually have my acceptance letter. As the next to last person to interview, I was still on campus when the Dean started notifying applicants (I actually bought a t-shirt from the medical school at the campus bookstore after my interview). So, the Dean said come on by his office and he handed me my acceptance letter.

The letter says $3,000 deposit within 30 days of the date of the letter mailed to Emily. The letter was dated the date of the interview - December 1st.

The interview pace will have to pick up with a class of 100 to fill (could be 108 if the other post is correct - I don't know). We interviewed on the first interview day. I don't have any idea if all 10 who interviewed on that day were accepted.

I don't agree with the assessment of the school being generous with acceptances. I came away from the process believing that Dr. Murphy and his staff are committed to their mission of producing rural primary care physicians. All of the applicants that I met were well qualified, personable, enthusiastic, and, in my opinion, well suited to study medicine. They would be good selections and I hope that all were accepted.

Just be yourself and be honest. Get to know the other applicants while you wait together. It will be time well spent.

So now the big question is.....where are you going?? You obviously have to make a quick decision! I thought you might have declined this interview because you seemed so set on PCOM-GA! I'm dying to know!

Thanks Kame. I will be discussing this decision with the boss (my wife) and deciding real soon. I have to send a class deposit to one or the other. I'm not sending that much money to both schools.

As for you, good luck. It is still early in the process. Keep the faith.

Myrmidon- congratulations on your acceptance into WC...

For those who are counting, 4 of 5 in the afternoon interview session have posted on SDN that they were accepted. That doesn't mean that 1 of our group was not accepted. I recall one person who was not an SDN member.

Sure sure, by generous, I don't mean the offers aren't well deserved. I apologize if it came across that way! But as you said, with that number of seats to fill and the number of students already accepted and committed to other schools, they are probably less inclined to really try to sift through applicants like they would if they were starting in September like everyone else. They should, though! There are so many people that are opting to apply late just to see if they have a shot and they have great stats. They could really get a strong first class!

Congrats to those accepted! I hope to hear from WCU soon!

So now the big question is.....where are you going?? You obviously have to make a quick decision! I thought you might have declined this interview because you seemed so set on PCOM-GA! I'm dying to know!

Grace,

As in any marriage, I need to discuss this with my partner - my wife. Of course the husband always gets the last word in anything. And the last word is always "Yes ma'am." Seriously though, until we decide together, I am withholding announcing any decision.

Both schools are great. There are positives to each. I am most humbled that I was invited to interview and was accepted.

I did not decline the interview invite to WCU because I am so positive about WCU in general and in particular the community based medicine approach. The students are going to get more hands-on experience and exposure than at most schools. That appeals to me.

My heart goes out to those folks who are so well qualified and have the right stuff to be a wonderful physician yet don't receive any interview.

Thank you Kame! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - remember, some schools interview until mid-late March so you have several months of interviews still left.

All three of the guys were accepted who interviewed on the 1st, do you know if the girls were accepted? Congratulations, I know you are excited, where did you do you undergrad and masters?

Both females in our 1 p.m. group were accepted as both have posted as such on SDN.

For those of you with multiple offers, is the deposit at WCU-COM about average?

hey everyone, i was the guy from alabama that interview on december 1st with everyone at 1pm. i too was accepted. i got the call while I was on my way home.

Wow...the afternoon group was batting 1.000.

Impressive avg. Congrats to all of you who were accepted!!!!!!

I understand that. The thought of coming up with that much $$ in 30 days does not do my bp any good either. I just wanted to know what the "normal" deposit was.

Depends on the school. I know LMU's is $2000 and PNWU is $1000 I think. Most I have seen are between the $1000-$2000 range.

I am not sure what "normal" is but PCOM GA's deposit is $250 within 30 days of acceptance or December 31st whichever is later followed by $2,000 on or before April 15th.
