SUP nice to meet a lot of you I'm hoping this weekend. I only know that I for sure met one person, but I'm sure I talked to probably all of you, as I think I eventually did make it around to you all.

I was one of the few guys dancing at the Velvet Dog Friday night until 2 AM ha, ummmm also was bowling for a lot of Saturday night.

Hmm! Take all of the numbers you posted, subtract one, and substitute rock band for bowling, and there I was.

all the canucks got together (the real ones, not the pretend ones :meanie:), including Dr. Mehta's husband. we all got together and tried to concoct a proper scheme for invading the states with with our water lilys, beavers, and random signs everywhere that say 'caution beware of moose'. we'll have you all drinking labatt, and saying eh in no time!!

By the way I don't know about you guys, but I fell in love with Case this weekend. An apartment in Little Italy or Coventry is all I need and I will be totally happy.

Are you all planning on having cars? I know it will be necessary for the 3rd/4th years, but what about the first 2 years?

Absolutely I'll have a car. I probably won't drive much, but it'll be nice to have it there.

actually it might not be as necassary as you think. alot of the 4 main hospitals are pretty close from my understanding, close enough to bike plus the public transportation is pretty good so you can take that in the winter. its a recession yo, save your money 👍

UH is the only hospital that you can reasonably walk to from Little Italy/Cleveland Heights on a daily basis. Nevertheless, you could potentially do all your rotations there, but when it gets real cold and you need groceries/supplies, you may want to at least have a roommate with a car.

:hello: Nice new kitty avatar! Is this one yours?

Hi there! I enjoyed our walk / stealth mission to campus yesterday. 🙂 I didn't take this kitty pic, but maybe I'll switch to one of mine soon...

Are you all planning on having cars? I know it will be necessary for the 3rd/4th years, but what about the first 2 years?

Driving around Cleveland is pretty easy, and I was reading somewhere (I think on the Code Blue site) that a lot of people end up preferring to drive to campus. On the other hand, public transportation seems pretty accessible if you don't have one.

And I definitely fell (more) in love with Case this weekend, too. 😀

I met at least four who weren't super sneaky about who they were.:meanie:

You, cheasus, and amph, I did not officially meet in an SDN context, however...

Yeah, I don't think I know enough about anybody on here to really know at all. But that's okay, since meeting people in real life is the best way to go!

Whoa! Totally not obvious. (I'm probably obvious since I'm a freakin' canuck!)

The only people I'm certain that I met were JuliaGuila, Myuu, and sirius(I think?) Who else did I meet (cheasus? amph?)!?

You guys are fun bunch. I had a blast getting to "50". Let me know where each of you ends up. 🙂

What! I just made the connection just now since you're saying you're Canadian (for some reason I thought you were from Georgia or something) and that bit about getting to "50". Yes, we definitely met. I was staying in room 501 and you in 503.

By the way I don't know about you guys, but I fell in love with Case this weekend. An apartment in Little Italy or Coventry is all I need and I will be totally happy.

Yup, I saw a pretty sweet 1BR in Little Italy on Friday afternoon. I'm leaning much more heavily towards Case, and now the only thing left is financial aid (anyone know when that's coming out?) as well as figuring out if I want to have a roommate or not for M1.

Are you all planning on having cars? I know it will be necessary for the 3rd/4th years, but what about the first 2 years?

Definitely having a car, mainly for getting groceries and driving home (I live a little more than 3 hours away) for the holidays. I just have to be sure that wherever I live provides a parking space of some kind and I'm good.

only other school possibly contending has now rejexed me =/... so....

case it is! 😀

second look weekend ftw.

So now what do we do with one month of summer?

Absolutely loved second look weekend. I was rather impressed by the current and potential students. Everyone was so unique, talented and social! I'm sure I met people from SDN but I never asked, didn't even think about it. I know I met copacetic and vishdas, but I had met them at second look too (don't know if they even know it was me 🙂). I really hope financial aid comes through because I don't think I could have created a much better curriculum and group of students for a medical school.

I am one of the two iowa guys, you can take a guess at which one.

Hi folks, I have narrowed it down to Case and another school and will be able to make a decision after the award letters are handed out. I have a quick question about the acceptance letter. The wording is a bit confusing. Does signing and returning the letter bind us to Case?

The Acceptance Letter said:
In the next few days you will receive hard copies of this letter in the mail. If you wish to accept the place tendered to you, please sign and return one copy of the letter to us by Friday, <insert date here>. Retain the other copy for your records. If you accept this offer but then wish to withdraw at a later date, you have only to notify us.

I would say not binding. But I wouldn't mind having a new classmate!😀

It's not binding. They have the same policies as other schools. With Case, as long as you withdraw by May 1st your deposit is returned to you. GL!

How much is the deposit and when do we have to send it in

There is no deposit, at least for the regular MD program.

Thanks to every one for responding. Case is a great school with great vibe. And the curriculum is very flexible too. Couldn't afford second look costs. Good luck.

Hey, thanks all for the info on Case's 2nd look. I was also not able to attend, but it was nice to know you all had such positive reactions. Looking forward to meeting all of you soon.

Yeah man. You're going to be really happy with the people at case. I had a blast.

Seconded. So V, when are you going to hear from McGill? 😉

Turns out. I just heard today. Although I'm ecstatic, I have to say that I honestly have a little feeling of remorse that I won't get to be a part of your lives next year. It really is hard for me to turn case down! God! What an amazing place. I made a lot of good friends in just one weekend, imagine what four years would do!
Peace out mah brothas and sistas.

Sad day. 🙁

But also happy day! 🙂

Congrats, Vihsadas, and best of luck! 😀 We'll miss you!

Congratulations!! Any chance Case might give you an unimaginable amount of money?😳

Hey folks, great meeting you all at 2nd look.

I'm not a huge SDNer so I don't know you all from your profiles, but the whole gang was a lot of fun to meet, talk to, go to school with. I was the bearded guy with the bowling shoes (before we went bowling).

The main reason I'm writing is that I heard from Wanda Rollins that financial aid packages will be sent out in 7 to 10 days and we should all receive them before the 1st.

That is most excellent news! 😀

👍👍 Like I told you, I would definitely have to go with McGill if I was in your shoes. So congratulations! I'd buy you a drink if we were still in Cleveland.. lol

So how is aid at Case usually? Pretty generous, stingy? I really have no idea.

Thank you sir for that bit of information.

I am REALLY hoping that they'll throw me a bone or two in terms of aid. I am looking at this website right now (http://casemed.case.edu/financial_aid/FAcurrentacademicbudget.cfm) and my jaw has been sitting on the floor for the last couple minutes now.

I loved it at the SLW, I loved meeting all of the people who were there, I love the curriculum and the deans/faculty seemed REALLY supportive of the students, which is the biggest factor for me. Heck, I even liked Cleveland! It's a great, if not perfect, fit for me.

But $45,930 a year for tuition is no joke, and neither is a COA of $69,180 (even if that is an overestimate). If my parents were footing the bill, then I wouldn't have any problem whatsoever with that. But they aren't. So now I am just trying to come to terms with being on the hook for that much debt. So I am hoping there will be a fair amount of aid to make it more palatable, but I really don't know. I didn't get an invitation to apply for merit scholarships so that's out the window; and there aren't that many private scholarships I can find that I qualify for.

So that's why I'm still waiting to see if there are any welcome surprises in the financial aid packages. But I don't expect much, which makes it pretty tough.

That cost is a bit scary, but I'm guessing that aid is pretty generous, I hope/pray? I love Case so it's kinda a moot point, ha, as I'm going there pretty much regardless.

I remember someone saying it was more generous than some other school, but as to total amount of aid... no idea.

In housing news, http://casemed.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=house has some handy resources pre-assembled for your apartment/house-hunting enjoyment!

Is it July yet 🙁

Is it July yet 🙁

Soon, my as-yet-unidentified friend. Soon!

So. Our list of things that occur next week:

1. Documents and presentations posted
2. Google map of campus and its surroundings?

Things to come later:

3. FINANCIAL AID. (OMG.)

Things to come around the same timeframe:

4. Computer specs for the class of 2013

You are not the only one.

In my case, I fear that - unless Case comes forward with some sort of miracle - I'll have no choice but to withdraw. Taking on that kind of debt (~70K/year) is something that I simply cannot bring myself to do for numerous reasons. A shame, really, because I really liked the school fit-wise and would be quite happy there! But, at least I'll be comforted by the thought that someone who both wants to matriculate at Case and is more capable of taking on such a burden will take my place.

For all two of us who will know what relevance this has at all, the squirrel in question is the Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger):

which has no sexual dimorphism in size or appearance.

Move along. Nothing to see here.😎

Haha, yes! Good investigative work, Myuu! 👍

As you can tell, I am very busy at work right now.

Anyone else think the housing market is going to get a lot more competitive once the financial aid packages are out?:scared:

Maybe a bit, but you're only looking at ~170 students coming to case (around that many left last year). Many of them will share a place, and most won't start looking until a bit after financial aid comes out.

True. Only problem is that I won't be able to know where to look (re: affordability) until I know what the financial picture's going to be like.

Also, FYI, the triangle needs W2 proof of you making 4x rent via sustained employment or a guarantor to cosign who meets that requirement. Financial aid/case/who knows can be a guarantor, but only if there is a specific amount said aside specifically for housing.

Wish they'd told me that before I sent them money.

I myself am giving an exam at the moment. 😉

As for the housing market, I'm thinking that most people won't be looking until June. Our tour guide also mentioned that someone showed up in July last year and found a place within a day, so it seems like it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Well, I'd like to have an array of nice(ish) places to choose from. Maybe I'm too optimistic.:laugh::laugh:

A lakeside resort with a fully stocked kitchen is my personal ideal, but I'm willing to settle for something quiet and within a 10-minute drive to campus. 😀

If a cardboard box were heated and came with a parking spot and full bath, I'd put it right in front of the building. Ordinances be damned!:laugh::laugh:

Things I want in a living situation at Case (in order of importance).

1. Little Italy
2. Heat included
3. Fireplace
4. Patio

Honestly, only the first two are nonoptional. The fireplace and patio would be nice but I don't imagine they'd get a lot of use since I'm likely going to be living most of the next four years in a warm comfortable crevice in the library.

In the rare opportunities I do have to relax and socialize I would dig a cozy fire in the winter and a BBQ on a patio in the summer. Have any of you thought about splitting a place with something like three or four roomies?

3-4 roommates seems risky to me; I would consider it after the first year but I want to make sure the first year living situation doesn't become a snafu. So most likely I would want to live with 1 roommate, maybe 2 at most.

Heat being included in the rent so far looks like it'll be tough to find if you're living in a house in Little Italy. So far, of the couple places I've looked, only the Waldorf has heat included in the rent. The rest tell me to budget $50-100/month for heat/gas, especially in the winter.

As previous posters have noted, that number is very much the upper limit. As a current first year, I spent (or will have by the end of May) 53k. That includes my car, rent, tuition, everything. So by no means should you let a huge number like 70k scare you away. I spend 460 on rent, but there are quite a few people in the class of 2012 that spend in the 300s, so that number can come down even more if you're worried.

As for finding housing, I came the first day of class without a place to live and by the 3rd day, I had looked at 7 places, signed a lease and moved in. Obviously that isn't ideal, but don't worry too much about housing yet; there are a lot of places that open up in the summer.
